View Full Version : So, what just happened?

Hi folks,

Werewolf.com got hacked.

It's at least partly my own fault. I let the vBulletin version lapse and an exploit emerged that allowed access to parts of the database. While there are some among us who believe this particular attack was motivated by specific individuals making specific comments on specific other sites, the truth is, it was only a matter of time.

So the sad news is, the database was corrupted to a degree that our only option was to restore from an old backup (which would have contained virtually none of the current users or recent posts), or just wipe the site clean and start over, content-wise.

After some angst, we opted for the second option. It's rough, but it's functionally not much different from restoring from the backup. I hate to do it, but we've been left with no real choice.

What does this mean? It means you'll need to re-register. It means your account has been destroyed by those who "want to watch the world burn." But it also means we've upgraded to the latest version of the forum software, so this shouldn't happen again (it was a security hole in the version I had installed, not a general problem with vBulletin).

Mods, you'll be restored to your posts as soon as you create your new accounts.

I'm sorry this happened. I shouldn't have allowed it to happen. I realize I've let a lot of people down. I want to say it will never happen again -- and I'm going to stay on top of software updates to help insure that it doesn't -- but no software is hack-proof, and if someone wants in badly enough, they can do it. However, I'm pleased that in the 5+ years that the site was up in its latest incarnation, this was the only real incident. I hope you'll rejoin me in rebuilding our little community.

Thanks.

So, how was your day?

We made some organizational changes, just in case you're still with us.

The forums Religion and Therianthropy & Spirituality have been merged into Religion and Spirituality.

Sports was moved down into the Games and Entertainment section.

Gaming was renamed Computer and Console Gaming.

LARP is now in the Writing and Composing section. This is where I recommend we put the werewolf game (that was sadly interrupted), since it's kinda RP-ish. But that's not carved in stone.

Also, if you're having trouble posting or whatever, log out, delete your werewolf.com cookies, and log back in.

You should be able to now.

Werewolf game might fit better in LARP if the Games forum is now about PC/Console gaming.

I cannot say I am happy with the database wipe as not only does this mean the WereGames are gone, in the middle of the game run by me and GW, but also our story Bloodlit Prey is gone.

However, I understand it is the better option and the hacking couldn't truly be predicted. I am very grateful to still have WW.com up and running. Thank you Chriz! :D

I'm just whining. >_>

Plus the update is good - lots of new and spiffy features to play with. Squee! :)

Basically that is what McKitty is going to be trying to turn LARP into.

Before it was basically just blurring the lines of relays and elementary school cops and robbers w/mary sue.

Uhhh, I'm not sure that'w what I was getting at. I'm talking about for discussions of tabletop games, role-playing aside. I was always under the impression that Gaming handled ANY kind of gaming discussion, be it Gears of War XI, D&D or Monopoly. But with this new change I was just curious where these discussions of non-electronic gaming and games would go.

Ok, I'll broaden the Gaming forum back out, once I get a chance.

My thinking was to separate games you enjoy and play from games you're actually running on the site. To that end I think the werewolf game should remain under the "Writing and Composing" section, either in LARP, Relays, or its own (new) forum.

Opinions?

Sounds fine. I always disliked putting the game into LARP because, well, the reputation of LARP.

You know, with a lot of the tools places like WotC are putting out, we could actually do some true online RPG'ery.

The great thing about the total wipe is losing all the crap that gave it that reputation. And the members who signed up the quickest and are more aggressive can muscle out any of that junk if it tries to creep in again.

Speaking of thanks, the Thank You feature was an add-on someone had written for vBulletin, but not actually part of vBulletin itself. I want to bring it back, but I need to do some research into its security.

From what I understand, the Thank You feature wasn't what let the hacker in, but it's also not "covered" under the security fixed put out by Jelsoft.

If you want to salvage anything from the old site, I suggest you hurry and look through Google's cached Werewolf.com/vb pages.

Using this, I was able to restore the Rules thread in Poetry that stood for many years.

I would like to ask that those who do this only do so to track down an important rule thread or particular story for their own personal use. Such as you DarkWolf, perhaps it's not too late to get your Prey story and save it to your computer.

I would hate to see old threads brought up all over the place, but we all know how crappy it is to lose a story or relay right in the middle of it.

Viruses can magically jump onto a user's hands and thus infect any computer they touch. True story.

Or, being serious, if you're really that worried, just scan the computers. It won't harm them.

In reality you don't have to scan every computer you or she has ever been on while connected to ww.com.

Only if you were on the site at the time it was hacked. Like you saw his site, heard the music tried really hard to read Arabic thinking we were under new management.

However, it's never a bad idea to run a virus scan for shits and giggles.

The specific hacker was Cord3r at w50@hotmail.com (although I'm sure that's just one of many addresses).

He hosted through these guys, at least at the time: http://www.m5zn.com/

He came in through Cogent, and I notified them, but I'm not convinced they can do anything significant.

The question is, did he do it on his own just for fun, or was he pointed at us?

In any event, it turned out to be a good thing for the site, at least in some respects. I'm really happy to see so many people back and embracing the whole "fresh start" thing.

I googled that bastard's name about a minute after I saw the black screen, it came up with a lot of "Hacked by Cord3r"s, so I'm thinking he probably does it for kicks.

Also, what's even more stupid is that it says "just For Fun" and "Your site waz hacked NO damage waz caused in this hack!! ... I don't intend to harm this server or cause any problemz at all." among other things in some of the hacked site's descriptions.

I feel like I should say this, so people don't continue to have the wrong idea.

Even if your visitor messages are designated private by you (using the profile privacy options), all admins and mods can and do read everything that's posted. We do this to make certain this site remains a safe place for all our members. Because of this, anything you do not want to be read by the entire moderating staff (for any reason), I suggest you use an IM system or PMs. I'm saying this now because like it or not, we're learning about your business.

As always, PMs are private to everyone (including moderating staff). As the recent announcement has already stated, we have a new feature that allows inappropriate PMs to be reported, just like any post, by the receiver. You can find the button marked "!" at the top right of each PM you receive.

I'm not saying this discourage the use of visitor messages. It's a great new feature and we're happy everyone is using it. If you don't care that people can read your messages, then by all means have fun!

There is a thread now (http://www.werewolf.com/vb/showthread.php?t=513) that also has messaging systems listed so ww.com does not become your main means of communicating with each other. Please don't overuse the pm system, especially if you guys bitch about how slow or limited they are.

Just as a reminder about albums, make sure you have people's permission when you post their pictures in them. Especially when they are not a member of ww.com.

Also, just to spare us copyright or legal grief that the aforementioned can also cause, please cite the original creator of any artwork that isn't yours that you put in there.

Thanks :p

Just for a little admin emphasis here.

DO NOT post other peoples' art in your public albums without their permission. Or at the very least, give the artist credit.

If you want to discuss a particular artist's works and techniques, we have an entire forum (http://www.werewolf.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=36) for that. Please make use of it.

Your album is for your own stuff -- photos or art. It's ok to have a pic of you wearing your Spongebob shirt, but don't just throw up a picture of Spongebob like you're passing it off as your own (unless, of course, you actually drew it).

Right now we're issuing reminders in the album comments, but if this becomes a problem then pictures will be taken down.

Jeez I go away on business for a bit and all hell breaks loose, Chriz Can I get my account set back so I can see and do every thing? Or do I need to make my plea to the DemiGods The Mods and have them plead my case.

Ok folks, we're thinking grace period is over. If you aren't keeping up to date on some of the rules we're trying to put in place and breaking them you will be getting infraction warnings that will live on your profiles.

It helps to read the thread in which you're posting. (http://www.werewolf.com/vb/showpost.php?p=2118&postcount=82)

This (http://www.werewolf.com/vb/showthread.php?t=967) is also helpful.

Just a quick note. We're going to stop fast-tracking people, which was something we did with folks we thought we recognized.

You'll need to work your way up through your 10 posts, sorry.

Glad I tumbled over this thread - I've been on ww.com less lately, but still enjoy the odd trawl. I thought I'd been guilty of being idle too long and there'd been an understandable purge of any quiet accounts!

Allowed me to update my residency anyway. Seems ww.com went down just as I went down under.

I just got served for not writing a book report! I truly don't know how to feel about it, to be honest. I don't know whether to feel derisive, insulted or maybe to feel that I've just been branded with a big yellow star and that I'm going to be rounded up by the mods with all the other offenders and placed in a "camp" to improve my "Concentration".
All I know is that I'd better straighten up and fly right to avoid getting another yellow card! Lawks!

Get ready the V masks because we're basically rounding you lot up for crazy medical experiments. Our reasons disguised by some cliche fascist pseudo politics.

In reality, the yellow blobs do go a way and they are pretty much for the mods to keep their heads up.

We just want people to apply more content to their posts, and/or be reading content of posts to understand what your replying too. We had such a problem before with people getting off topic or not discussing anything, one liners etc...

Sorry if it seems hasty for people just returning ( Necro :P) but it is avoidable for the most part. I don't think many of you will accumulate warnings or infractions if people pay attention.

btw for the folks that have spammed my pm box, contesting does get old. Do consider that mods are human and have lives that meet with some stress outside of ww.com. Think how easy it is to let that stress be taken out on people being really unnecessarily annoying...

Just think of getting spanked by a sexy nanny and not fight it so it doesn't snowball to a pissed off nun kicking your ass.
