Inspired a bit by this (http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2009/07/let_there_be_bike_shorts_a_gee_1.html?sc=fb&cc=fp) that's making it's rounds among illustrators and comic artists.

If they're going to redesign Supergirl's costume what should it look like?
Personally I never understood why they changed it to a two piece, it kind of just emphasized the lack of skills for drawing correct anatomy some artists have. I liked the original version, tummy covering intact and Kara with the cute 1950's hairstyle but I'm open to anything I guess.

Personally, I love the original one-piece outfit. If not that one, then perhaps the white T-shirt one they used for a while.

You made me break out the sketchpad.

For colors, the darker part of her suit would be a darkish blue (somewhat darker than traditional Superman blue). The white parts would actually be red, including her "chap" things and heels. I'm thinking the cutout parts of the "S" on her chest might be yellow inside, even though I shaded them dark-like in the drawing.
She does have a thin, narrow, streamlined cape. Not a wide, cloak-like thing, but something sleek, like her body.
Her hair is blonde, of course, and the pouf thing is supposed to be her equivalent of Superman's curl (which, Superman Returns notwithstanding, is supposed to be another little "S"). And her hair would come together in a point somewhere between her shoulder blades, to mimic the point on her chest and shoulders.

I must admit, I have no problem at all with Supergirl wearing skirts. Then again, it seems like that guy who exclaimed that he never wanted to see Supergirl's panties ever again was doing this because he wanted to get lucky with some hot feminist receptionist in his office that brought the topic to his attention, and once he saw that he made headlines somewhere he ran with article in hand and a goofy smile on his face to said receptionist...
Chriz, that's quite an awesome sketch! I don't know why, but I've always had issues with sketching simplistically without detail. I applaud you for the talent!

I kinda agree with chriz's design with one change. I just think it would look a little better without the sleeves. I kinda like the classic outfit styles of Spider Woman and Marvel Girl, and I think an outfit styled in a similar way would be a good way to go.

Looking at it again, it's not entirely clear that her thighs are covered. They are, that's not supposed to be skin, it's just part of her outfit that's red (the "chaps" I mentioned before).
The "bare thighs" look isn't bad, actually, but it's not right for Supergirl.

Very nice, however I personally liked the idea of the bare thighs. I mean, not just because I'm a guy, but because it seemed to look better.
All in all, nice job!

Yeah I just didn't really understand it as the years went on. Most of the Super heroes' outfits got more sleek but hers kind of just bad downgrade.
The white shirt outfit being my least favorite.
I mean I get they want to portray her as more juvenile anyways since she is 15-17 depending on which comics you read. Then there is the added panty-ness, lol I don't get the point of that. She just really seemed to lack a costume and having panty showing really emphasized that and makes a few people cry pedobear.
I don't think the shorts are going to change things, tight short shorts are still objectifying.
A new costume overall, I think, would just be the way to go. Make her look like an actual superhero as opposed to a girl flying to fight straight out of middle school.

You know, I think that "hot pants" look is quite nice as well. I don't see why that can't be "the look" for Super Girl.
However, I do agree with you when you said that everybody else's costume got sleeker while hers kind of got a down grade or didn't change much at all.

Now that I see it colored, I do think it's too much red.
I guess if I were to revise it, I'd reduce that somewhat.

Might work as a different shade of blue?

I was thinking shorten them, so they function more as a definition of the top of her thighs. Maybe I'll do another sketch to show what I mean.
The trick with Supergirl is to make her both sexy and wholesome. :p

Ok, what I was thinking didn't work, either, but then I tried this. The panels on her hips are just on the side, they don't extend around to the back. They'd be an abstraction of the skirt, but really just color regions.

i think i like the look, chriz...does have a sleekness to it...and yet shows a bit more reserve than the hot-pants and cheerleader-tease skirts that the regular illustrators have been "playing" around with.
yes, pun intended. come on, folks, you should know by now i cannot resist the opportunity. :D
getting back to the outfit...i think Supergirl has suffered long enough with both the ridiculous 50s conservatism that put her in a copy of her cousin's uniform but with a ridiculous skirt that must have made landings an opportunity for embarassment and later the sex-object outfits that maybe provided an extra incentive for male villains to attack her just so they could enjoy the view of her arrival to foil their nefarious schemes.
this outfit idea of chriz' meets the need for adolescent sex appeal but in a more conservative way that allows Supergirl to expect more mature treatment by artists and fans as she matures as a person and a hero.
so, the next question then is...chriz...have you submitted the sketches to DC for consideration?

Well, no, since I just drew them last night. :p
I did submit pages to Marvel at one point. They said they liked my art but I wasn't their style. Ah well...

Okay ill start from foot to head. Red boots with the yellow trim on top, bare legs, red miniskirt with classic belt. The rest pretty much just like Superman, full upper costume, red cape, blonde hair maybe with a modern choppy cut. I absolutely hated the valley girl version with the white belly shirt and short cape, it was like "oh look its Sass with a superman shirt on dur de durrrr".
