If you like the WereGames you will surely enjoy this movie! The premise is rather simple and there isn't a huge amount of story development - there's simply no need. It really is a video form of a WereGame with only slight differences.

The game starts with a random suicide which brings in the attention of a Detective. Then five people (Guard, Mechanic, Salesman, Young Woman, and Old Woman) are trapped in an Elevator. Strange occurrences start to happen as people try to get them out - people die in the attempt and even the people in the Elevator start to die one-by-one. One of those watching and trying to help knows this story all too well - especially after seeing the face of the Devil on the screen. The Devil himself has come to torture these people before he takes them down to Hell and he has a frontrow seat because he's secretly posing as one of the people trapped in the Elevator.

Will the Detective learn it's the Devil and find out which one it is before it is too late? With the attempts to rescue them directly becoming difficult as those who try lose their lives can he find a way to save them?

As a concept it's interesting. It's why we love the WereGames which are, in themselves, variations of old games of various forms like Mafia, and one step away from even older classics like Clue. As a movie, though, I do find it a little lacking. While the mystery mounts there's not as much tension coming through as there should be. Maybe it's the years of the WereGames but I knew who it was from the start. The ending is a little cliché and doesn't seem well thought out. Perhaps I expected more but the ending just wasn't that satisfying.

Still, it's enjoyable and an intriguing movie adaptation of these games we love. Worth it to buy? No. Worth a rental? Definitely.

I've been wanting to see that just because it's an M. Night Shamalablamumblelen movie, and I've liked his movies so far, except for The Village (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368447/). I am so glad I didn't pay for that theater ticket.

At least now Devil has made it onto my Netflix queue, so I'll soon check it out. :D

Praise for Shyamalan? This is new, though I'll admit I was curious about Devil. It looked more bent on being scary and not just...weird. I did like The Village, though. It wasn't scary, and maybe it was supposed to be, but it was unexpected. That, and Bryce Dallas Howard is freakin gorgeous.

...Lady in the Water was still bloody weird, though.

...Replying to myself is also weird...

...I'm not gonna do this again.

He is slanted as a big "contributor" of the film. It was really made, directed and written by other hard working people.

Well he produced and wrote the original story. But yeah, there are other people to blame for this dreck.

I never wanted to see it, personally I thought the movie was just another mess from hollywood to be burned. Like the Twilight sage, and the Transformers Trilogy.

I've only seen one movie by M Night that was any good, and that was The Sixth Sense. Loved that movie, Bruce Willis was amazing. But this movie looked like it was a quickie that was produced with no real thought added to it or even the after thought of a real plot, just "Devil's tormenting random people for no real reason other than he's evil, try and survive." Never the less, I respect DW's opinion and so will be watching this with Ry when it gets here...

I agree you for the most part (the only difference is the level of how I regard Twilight and Transformers movies, although I agree that they're not worth Buy or Cinema ticket for - basically, while I know there's far better, I know there's far far worse and was entertained to some degree and that's all I care about).

Devil is not a great movie. It will not blow you away with great scenes or move you with great acting or engage you with riveting plot. The only reason this film gets "OK" rating is because of that novelty of a "movie variant of a basic WereGame". As a story though it's very lacking. Which, really, there's no excuse for. The WereGames we have here are a more complicated form of what the movie displays and we write a wonderful story around it. Some of our WereGames have been truly epic. This film lacks all of this.

It's worth the time to watch but not the money for purchasing. It's a one-night rental movie that won't thrill you but may entertain you enough to not regret pressing play. For WereGame enthusiasts this does have intrigue - it can ignite ideas for games. For non-WereGame enthusiasts there probably won't be any appeal.

I'm easy to please - it's difficult for me to dislike a film. But my ranking system is based on three core things (there's a fourth for book/comic/game adaptations but irrelevant here): acting, story, and style. Special effects fall under style. By style I just mean the elements and themes outside of acting and story - the logic of the world they're portraying and how well they are portraying it from a visual, rather than story, point of view.

Acting: Meh. Not good, not cringe-worthy, and merely 'acceptable'.

Story: Almost none but the concept is good. Would love to see a movie that takes the concept and adds a decent story.

Style: Actually does have a good style. They keep the line between "just a murderer/coincidences" and "actually the Devil" fairly interwoven for the most part which is done rather well.

With 2 OKs and 1 Good this is therefore ranked "OK" for me. Some real story or better acting would improve the rank easily.

The summary of this long-winded post is: I do recommend it as an OK movie but I do not "highly" recommend it. Don't rely on this for a night's entertainment - it's just a movie that'll do if you don't have anything better.

So just for fun, I'll be updating my opinion as I watch the movie, now that it's arrived. I'm in the opening credits right now, and I like the way they did it. Unique, I haven't seen it done that way very often. And the guy falling on top of the van was pretty cool too lol. :D

3:20- So far, it's pointing kinda strongly towards one guy, but that may be a red herring; they do point out everyone else pretty clearly. Hmm...no vote yet. I'll try to vote before someone dies ;)

3:32- Injury number 1! No deaths yet lol. I wanna vote Vince, but it seems too obvious...why does everyone have to act suspicious?! *Shakes fist*

3:42- Holy shit! I knew it was too obvious lol. I missed Round 1, no more misses for me XD OK, it's go time...they point to Ben this time, but I think it's another red herring. I vote the other guy, the one who's been mostly quiet, but helpful lol.

3:58- Death number 2! Guy there is still being helpful, and pointing fingers at the same time. It may be Ben still, but it's still too obvious. Sticking with my vote =P

4:05- I love how the plot gets thicker and thicker with each round, like the most epic of Weregames. This is also a "classic" M. Night movie, in my opinion, which I also like. My vote may change.

4:10- Three down, two to go! I vote Sarah this time!

4:15- Damn it, no wonder I suck at Weregames...to be fair, they cheated.

4:23- Well, movie's over. I liked it, not the best movie ever, but I liked it. LOL, I like it even more now that I saw the very last shot; the whole going back to the intro thing...I'm glad I did this :D
