Witches, they say, warlocks, devils, demons...we have been called every name under the sun. What is so ungodly about us? One would think that God had blessed us with such abilities, graced us with his most generous gift, but no, not now, not here. We are captured, killed, abused and trodden upon, the dirt beneath the common man's shoes. To you, we are nothing.

Institutions dot the globe, holding areas for those like us. We become lab rats, guinea pigs, beasts treated like scum out of your jealousy. They hope to develop a serum to endow themselves with such powers, for war is inevitable. Where is our place in this? Where is our peace?

That is something none of us know but all of us want to find out.

Okay, so this is a combo of futuristic and fantasy, I guess. q: Your normal, overused “kids with powers” shtick with a touch of clichéd enslavement, experimentation, and war. Still, oldies are goodies, right? I hope so.

Race is human, but your human may have the power to transform into another race (multiple powers are fine). No god modding, please. C; Be creative and have fun!

Name: Evalyn Carr

Age: 15 years

Sex: Female

Race: Human

Abilities: The ability to go unnoticed. This ability can only be used when Evalyn is still (or creeping along slowly), and it does not make her invisible, simply forgotten, or overlooked, in a sense. It cannot be used while she sleeps, and although it takes little energy to do, there is a risk that she will forget herself in the process of hiding and die due to her body forgetting to run. If someone is focusing on her before she begins to hide, it takes longer for them to forget her, thus proving less effective. Cameras and other recording devices are unaffected by this skill.

The ability to wall off telepathic attempts towards herself. In other words, she can keep people from reading her thoughts. Activates automatically while hiding, sort of a passive ability. Also comes up when an attempt to read her thoughts is made. Otherwise, without conscious thought, this ability lies dormant (in other words, if none of the above has happened, she has to invoke it herself).

Weapons: None.

Appearance: A waifish build made up of thin, trembling limbs, like dying branches in the wind. Eyes a dusty brown, reminiscent of moth wings, with heavy lashes that seem to drag her gaze constantly down. Always shadowed from troubled sleep. Pale skin, almost translucent in places, with blooming bruises and a heady amount of nicking. The most striking thing about her is her shocking yellow hair, bright like canary feathers streaming down her shoulders in unruly curls.

A plain sleeveless shirt and sweatpants cover her, washed out blue in color, and a pair of worn gray sneakers are strapped to her feet. This is the garb of one of the many institutions across the world, the color ranking her as non-threatening in abilities (*red being the color for those who do carry a threat). A thick bracelet that looks more like a shackle hung upon her right wrist, made of a mix of power-dampening components. Carries no accessories otherwise, although an intricately drawn "S" is tattooed upon the left side of her throat, taking up the space from jawbone to collarbone. Its origins are unknown.

Personality: Evalyn's powers accommodate her personality, secretive and shy. She's quite compliant to orders, but seems to be easily disturbed into hiding. While she is curious, her setting in the Institution has smothered a great deal of it, replacing it with fear. She doesn't have much confidence, and makes a much better follower than a leader.

It's very easy for her to work under authority figures, however, and as long as their demands aren't ludicrous she will rarely speak out against them. Alone, she proves quite the target, highly insecure and quite lost. Without someone to guide her or give her orders, she seems quite hopeless, although she’s excellent at sneaking about, and seems to always appear tired.

Bio: Evalyn has no memories of “normal” life, having been in the institution for as long as she could recall. Her mother, suspected of powers after heavy studies, was taken to the institution while she was pregnant with Evalyn, dying shortly after her child’s third year of life. Evalyn was kept for study, and indeed inherited powers of her own, thus earning her a permanent place at the institution.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Evalyn's legs quaked under her weight as she padded through the charred remains of the Institution, eyes wide with fright and disbelief. What had happened? Who had...done this? Wrapping her arms tightly around herself, she sank to the ground before the blackened bars of a cage, breath becoming ragged as she struggled to recollect what had happened last she was conscious.

She had been in a cage, waiting to be taken for her physical exam. The metal of the bars suppressed her, but she had still been trying to hide, eyes roving around to her other caged companions across the hall. Some seemed caught up in their own worlds, others fearful, but there had been one boy in red right across from her, staring. His powers were a threat.

A slight tremor went down her spine as she pulled her legs to her chest, watching him as he watched her. He had simply smirked, giving her a subtle nod, and it was then she had to avert her eyes. It felt like he was pushing her with his gaze, even though the bars to his cage were far thicker than hers and he had thick shackles replacing her single bracelet. Who was this boy? What could he do to make him so deadly? And...could he still use his power, despite all the restraints?

Hesitating, she brought her eyes back up to meet his, feeling the full strike of his power against her skin. Before she could even whimper, he had brought a finger up to his lips, shushing the sound. Her eyes grew heavy then, and she found herself wading through siren-filled dreams and piercing screams, only to wake up a safe distance from the wreckage, completely unharmed.

Had that boy destroyed this place? Where was everyone else? Where was he? What was she supposed to do?! Sobbing softly, she brought her hands up to wipe her eyes, noticing the lack of weight on her wrist and her soul. "Come back; I don't know what to do..." Tears fled from her cheeks in a river now, raining upon her lap as she struggled not to fade. She couldn't survive, not alone, not like this...the world was too frightening, and surely, they would come back soon.

(OOC: If anyone wants to play the boy who seems to have started this havoc, go ahead. I kept him vague for a reason. q: )

Name: Matt Rorick

Age: 16 years

Sex: Male

Race: Human

Abilities: His primary ability is fire. He can create it out of the hydrogen in the air and control it. He can create it in ay amount and it always forms near his hands, whether floating around them or on the skin itself. The more fire he attempts to control, the more stable his control can become. If this ability is used too much he can pass out. His skin is basically flame retardant up to a near volcanic level of heat.

His second ability is far subtler. Matt can control certain sound frequencies, which can deafen people, break objects, and even knock people unconscious. Each frequency acts like a physical wave that assaults the target.

Weapons: A long metal pipe.

Appearance: Lean muscled, tall build. Dark brown hair tapering to a point between his shoulder blades, cut raggedly in front and parted so that it covers his right eye. Some streaks of his hair are bleached white and there are some severe burn scars that make drip lines down his ears and neck to his shoulders. This is the aftermath of a chemical spill during which Matt discovered that acid is a fire like any other. His steely gray eyes are bright and wild. His skin is neither pale nor tan and laced with scars and bruises. He is dressed in red level institution clothing, with heavy shackles on his wrists and feet that restrain his powers.

Personality: As was a common find in the institutions studies, a person’s powers usually depend on their personality. Matt is extremely self-confident, loyal, and somewhat insane. He can’t stand authority figures and contradicts them whenever possible. He’s easily distracted and has a strong sense of (somewhat misguided) justice. He tends to repeat himself in order to get his point across.

Bio: Matt’s only memory of the outside world was when he was about four. He has a memory of someone, whom he believes to be his father, showing him a red sunset and telling him “Remember this sight Matt. You must never give up. Even though the sun knows the moon will win in the end, he fights to triumph over it the next day. Be the sun Matt. Guide others, and never give up.” Matt took the memory to heart and spent every day of his institute life attempting to get out so he could find the person in his memory.
~~~~~~~~
Matt took a deep breath of hot, sulforous air, coughing as he heaved himself out of the darkness to his feet. Picking up a pipe he pushed himself up out of the institution ruble, looking around him. The place he had grown up in and hated so much was gone, burned to cinders under his own power. He grinned and started to laugh, the chuckle rapidly growing into a maniacle cackle as he fell to his knees amongst the charred remains, pure unadulterrated joy filling his mind. He was free!
Once he'd calmed down he picked up the pipe again, tapping it on the ground to test its strength. Satisfied with the weapon he slung it over his shoulder and climbed across the building remains, reviewing the whole escape in his mind. He'd gotten as many other test subjects out as he could, particularly one very faded girl. He was almost out, but at that point there was so much fire, and it was so hard to sontrol, that he fainted. He wasn't really sure how long he may have been out, but since the ash was still hot he assumed it hadn't been long. There was still a shackle on one of his ankles, he'd been able to burn all the other one's off, and it weighed him down a little.
As he crested a small pile of glass and wood he heard some sobbing and pathetic little cries. He went to investigate. At first he couldn't find where they were coming from, even though he seemed to have zoned in on the noise, and then he saw her.
"Hey" he said in a callused tone, "Calm down, don't cry."
((Thanks. :3))
Through her tears, Evalyn had not heard his approach; she hadn't heard a single thing past the panicked ringing that ricocheted wildly within her skull. Then his voice had breached her disarrayed little haven, causing her to jump, landing back on her elbows as her wild eyes found his face. Blinking dumbly as the sight sunk in, she quickly sat upright, wiping her ashy hands upon her pants half-heartedly.
Fighting for control of her voice, she softly cleared her throat, looking at him from head to toe in what she couldn't decide should be fear or gratitude. "It's you...it was you, wasn't it?" The back of her hand gathered up her stray tears, drying in the slow warmth, and she carefully got to her feet. How had he...but he had so many restraints! He didn't even have them all anymore.
"Wha...what do we do?" She sent him an imploring glance, playing nervously with the bottom of her shirt.
"Damn right it was me!" Matt admitted proudly. "Your welcome." he added, grinning. "Don't worry though, I'm not gonn hurt you." He said, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. "I guess the first thing to do is this, my name's Matt!" he said, extending a hand.
Evalyn found herself staring at Matt's hand for a crawling moment before releasing her shirt to take it gingerly in her own. His power was amazing, with an attitude to match. Thank goodness he wasn't mean. "Thank you." Pushing her hair from her face with her free hand while shaking with the other, she dared another glance at him. "I'm Evalyn."
He had destroyed this place single-handedly...was there really anything else to do but accompany him now?
"So" Matt said, releasing her hand and looking around. "Anywhere you'd like to go? I'm on a sort of mission you could call it." he siad confidentially. He climbed a short distance away, standing on top of another rubble hill. He looked around them, surveying the area. It was forest, but not too far in the distance he could see the glimmering lights of a city. "I wonder where we are" he thought to himself.
Evalyn lightly shook her head in response to Matt's question, following him up the rubble after a hesitant pause. "I don't know where I would go; I've never left here." After a few slips she finally caught up to him, taking in the world around her as if finally realizing its existance.
The destruction at her feet still simmered deep beneath the soot, and she realized with a drop in her heart that she could see the crushed remains of some people, like her or normal she couldn't say. Pulling at the ends of her hair, she forced her wavering gaze to the horizon, unsure once more of what to do. "What's your mission?"
She allowed her eyes to relax on the cool greenery of the treeline, blocking out the smell of death and fire as she imagined what it would be like to live amongst those trees instead of an Institution. "And...what if they come back?" Her voice fell to a fearful rasp of a whisper, and the fingers that had been absentmindedly curling among her hair gave another unhappy tug. After this, Evalyn knew that if she was caught surely she would let herself die.
Name: Adam Wolfe
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Abilities: Gravity Manipulation. Has the ability to strengthen the effect of gravity on a certain object (but not lessen it) or create a gravitational field around an object or point to draw other objects to it.
This ability has many uses, from crushing or pinning objects into the ground, creating single points of high gravity to draw other objects in (sort of a miniature black hole) to even moving objects around by subtly manipulating the gravity fields around them.
Appearance: Shoulder length, dirty blond hair, blue eyes. Just above average in height, though his thin build from his years in the institution make him appear taller than he is. Wears the Orange Level Institution clothing, not for his ability but because the personnel deemed him a low risk personality.
Personality: Adam is calm, composed and possesses the sense of control necessary of someone who can control one of the fundamental forces of this world, albeit only in small measures.
It was because of this control over his power that the staff at the institute graded him such a low risk for his abilities.
Bio: Adam was brought into the Institute at a fairly young age; not having as much control over his abilities then as he does now he wasn’t exactly hard to find. Having such a desirable ability, as well as being able to bring the roof down on them if he so chose, the scientists at the Institute treated him with a little less animosity than they did the other subjects as long as he behaved, i.e. didn’t bring the roof down. He’d never had any real desire to escape his confinement before, although as long as the chance has presented itself he is willing to go along with it.
****
Adam walked down the charred remains of a corridor, waving the dust and smoke and ash out of his face as he went. Whoever had done this had obviously been powerful, and Red level subject, with obvious fire based powers too strong for any shackle to repress.
He stepped over another burned, unrecognisable body and turned a corner into another ruined hallway. This corridor was apparently on the edge of the building, up ahead the wall had fallen over and the open air with the forest beyond was visible to him now. Through the haze he thought he could make out two figures, with the smog he couldn’t see more than that though he continued forward undaunted; even with all of his heavy shackles and collar still on he had enough power seeping through to pin anyone to the ground.
As he neared though he saw this was most likely unnecessary. Standing on top of a pile of fallen wall stood another escapee; Red level though only with one shackle, apparently he was either incredibly violent with his abilities or he’d lost the others. Near him on the ground stood a small, timid looking girl in the pale blue clothes of an unthreatening subject, and he could see why without knowing her power.
He continued forward until he stood next to the pile that the man stood on, although he did not know if either had noticed him. He looked out of the gap in the same direction as he did and saw the bright lights of the city beyond the trees. He turned back towards the two subjects and examined them a bit closer now that he could see clearly. The girl looked across the landscaped fearfully, whether afraid of what lay outside the walls or what waited for her inside them he did not know. The man on the other hand was completely different; he shone with confidence, almost arrogance as he looked out at the city with an almost longing to finally leave this place once and for all. Adam also noticed the slightly burned clothing and soot marks around his unshackled wrists that suggested recent contact with fire, though he himself seemed unburned. Adam looked back to the view before speaking.
‘You wouldn’t be the one responsible for this mess now would you?’
Matt turned to Evelyn, a slightly reassuring smile on his face. "My mission is to find my father.He's out there somewhere, just waiting for me." He said dreamilyM " And don't worry. If those filthy scum that call themselves doctors come back, I'll blow em SKY HIGH!" He laughed.
Matt hadn't heard the other escapee come up behind them, and he whirled toward the voice."Yeah it was me, did a pretty good job if I don't say so myself; and I do.Who're you?"
"Oh..." Evalyn found the warmth in Matt's tone comforting, and wondered if her parents were out there somewhere as well. She almost smiled at his confident declaration, but opted instead to soak in his laughter as she looked over the wreckage. Yes, she believed he could blow them sky high if they came back, but she still had no wish to take that risk.
As Matt whirled around to face the new arrival, she gave a start, ducking behind him instinctively as her ability shot out. Was it an Institution worker? The orange uniform eased her worries, and reluctantly she dropped her hiding, waiting for him to speak once more from her safety zone.
‘An opportunist; your little escape attempt opened my cage as well, I thought I might as well leave seeing as how the opportunity presented itself. If you’re looking for a name you can call me Adam. Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I better leave before the reinforcements show up’
Adam walked forward through a gap in the broken wall and out into the grounds of the institution; he took a deep breath of the clean air now that he was free of the haze that still lingered in the building, before calling over his shoulder to the two still standing on the pile of rubble.
‘You’re welcome to join me if you want, I doubt any of us know much of life outside these walls and it would probably be beneficial to all of us if we stuck together’
"Well he's got a point" Matt said, shrugging. "Come on mousy" he said, grabbing Evelyn's hand. He barreled through the rubble, pulling her along with him, until they were beside Adam. "Onward, toward civilization!" He said, pointing toward the forest. He released Evelyn's hand and started walking.
Evalyn opened her mouth to agree, but was quickly cut off by her own startled yelp as she was dragged along far faster than she was used to. Her arms flailed comically once he released her, balance whacked until she stumbled forward after them. "Ah...right."
The intrusion of her space had been awkward, now that she thought about it, but not necessarily in a bad way. Well...maybe that meant it was bad. He was strange, that was all. Rubbing her hands together absentmindedly, she hastened her pace to match theirs, trailing only slightly behind out of "mousy" respect.
Somewhere at the back of her mind, she felt as if by the end of this, her world would be thoroughly shaken.
Adam took one more quick glance at the two of them as they hurried to catch up with him; so far all of his assumptions as to the fire starters nature had been right, he certainly was as loud and brash as he had suspected, more so even, and he was undoubtedly eager to leave this place if the way he dragged that poor girl behind him was any indication. Even so, it would not do well to make any more assumptions now that he had the chance to get definite answers. He waited until they were level with him before walking again and directing his view back to the forest before them.
‘It will probably take an hour or so to reach the edge of the city, barring any significant setbacks. I would prefer if we put that time to some use and get to know each other a little better; I have provided you with my name, care to give me yours?’
He looked over at them both now, directing his request more towards the girl than the man in red.
Forcing her eyes away from the greenery once more, Evalyn focused her attention on Adam. He seemed to be very level-headed, quite the contrast to Matt. An hour of walking with them would prove to be enlightening, to say the least, and Evalyn hoped the walk would be uneventful.
Fingers coming up to caress the tattoo upon her neck, she shyly averted her eyes to her sneakered feet. "Oh, uh, I'm Evalyn." After a pause that seemed awkward to her, she added in a hurried, "Nice to meet you."
‘And it’s nice to meet you too. I don’t remember seeing either of you in my time at the Institution, then again I didn’t see many people other than those who were performing the examinations; they preferred to keep me mostly isolated for some reason’
Adam rubbed at one of his wrist shackles with his other hand absentmindedly; he’d been forced to wear the heavy devices ever since the first week or so when they’d identified and rated his abilities and power and over time he had grown used to there weight and presence, but now that he was free from the institution he couldn’t help but feel weighed down by these last aspects of his imprisonment.
‘So why was it the Institution took an interest in you two, if you don’t mind me asking? I myself can manipulate gravity to an extent, and your power is easy enough to guess, in nature if not the specifics, if you were indeed responsible for all that charring and smoke’
He directed this last comment at the red clothed subject whose name he still didn’t know, before turning once more to Evalyn, ‘But why were you brought to that place?’
"Well you seem to have it all figured out smart guy" Matt said. The comment wasn't sarcastic, and could be taken as a compliment. "My name's Matt. I was usually isolated from everyone else too." he looked over his shoulder at Adam, noticing that he still had heavy cuffs on him. "I can get rid of those if you want." He glanced at Evelyn, "Sorry for interrupting, keep on with your conversation" he apologized quickly, waving a hand. He turned back around and kept on walking.
"I...I've been there for as long as I can remember." Her hand cupped the back of her neck as she worked on keeping good pace, idly rubbing her fingers across her hairline. "And it's okay, Matt. Um...I can't do much but hide." Her blonde brows furrowed as she struggled to find her words, and she found herself looking to her companions.
After a few wasted attempts, she shook her head, hands migrating to clasp at her small bosom. "Well, people forget I exist when I do it." Evalyn chose not to mention her mental blocks, seeing it as unnecessary, and took turns looking between Adam and Matt.
"You two must be amazing...I mean, well, you can use your powers even with the suppressants." Rubbing her face with her hands, she sighed inaudibly, becoming flustered. This much idle chit-chat was making her wonky, and it was a foreign feeling, being in good company.
‘I don’t have everything figured out, I’m just observant. And I suppose they must have wanted to keep the higher level subjects away from each other, stop us co-ordinating a break out, guess they were expecting anyone to be able to do it themselves’
Adam redirected his view away from the others to look forward as they made the transition from the grassy grounds of the Institution to the shadowy undergrowth of the forest. He found a path that was more or less free of trees and headed in the general direction of the city and followed it.
‘That must be a useful ability, being able to hide so easily; sounds much more useful than simple invisibility, where hiding doesn’t stop them looking for you. As for the Suppressants?’ Adam looked down at his shackled wrist briefly before continuing.
‘I’ve noticed that they’ve been less and less successful at the keeping my power from me over the years; either they are weakening, or I am getting stronger. As for removing them; the shackles themselves may be an annoyance but I’m comfortable with my abilities being as strong as they are. I’m not sure how big a difference removing them might make’
"Suit yourself" Matt replied to Adam, shrugging. He looked ahead through the dark forest, anticipating the moment when the trees would fall away and the city would be there before him. Of course he'd never seen a city before, so he was excited for something new.
"So what about you Adam, why'd you end up in the institute?"
The faint sound of birdsong came to Evalyn's ears, and she almost stopped walking to listen to it. Her hands dropped from her face to take loose hold of her hips, and the simple awe on her face left her unguarded. Being outside was wonderful- no, being free was wonderful.
She slowed her pace a tad more, suddenly self-aware as she listened to Adam's cool chatter and Matt's lively replies. Interruption was something she did not plan on, and so she listened hard, surprised at how the new scenery could make her forget herself, if only for awhile. Once again, for a fleeting moment, Evalyn almost smiled.
Adam seemed to be unperturbed by his shackles, and that was shocking to her. Matt had destroyed his, and she was sure that their older companion could do the same if he so wished it. Still, the creeping chill of fear cupped her erratic heartbeats, and her grip on her waist grew tighter.
Evalyn gave a hard stare to Matt's shoes, choosing not to think.
‘Same reason anyone else ends up there, I had an ability and they wanted it; as long as I was more valuable alive than dead they were willing to keep me there. If you mean ‘how’ I ended up there? It wasn’t hard for them to find out about my abilities, I’m sure it was the same for you too; I was too young back then to have full control of all that power, I don’t know if I will ever be able to control it. That’s one of the reasons I don’t want these shackles removed, at least with them on I know I’m in control’
Name: Cael Rismuth
Age: 14 years
Sex: Female
Race: Human
Abilities: Cael has power over water and ice, being able to freeze the very water in the air or the water in a person's body. However, if she tries to control too much water at once, she'll either become woozy or pass out. She has an incredible resistance to cold, having sat in a meat freezer before she was captured for nearly an hour. She also has a constant aura of cold around her
Weapons: None.
Appearance: Cael has about neck length auburn hair that tops a head with an incredibly androgynous face. She wears the standard red garb of those who the Institution consider a threat. This was more out of her powers than her personality, which makes her less of a threat than most redshirts in the Institution. She isn't thin, more wiry than ahything.
Personality: Cael is almost always happy and rather carefree. In studies that the institute did, she seemed to have no fear, approaching lions as easily as kittens. She knows not anger or hatred either, only a want to be free.
Bio: Cael was found on the streets, barely 12 and knowing nothing of who she was or where she had come from. She had been stealing from street vendors and convenience stores in order to survive. When the Institutions sent people to catch her, she started running, only to hide in a meat locker for them to catch her in. Apparently, she had thought they were playing hide and seek.
--------
Cael pulled herself from the rubble, rubbing soot from her eyes as she looked around for anyone else. She spied some others moving towards a treeline, and started jogging towards them, yelling, "Hey! do any of you know what happened? Are we escaping? Is this an escape?"
"They're both so strong..." Evalyn's mumble was soft, gaze still caught on Matt's shoes with a head deep amongst her stubborn thoughts. Amongst the chattering birds, another faint call reached her ears, increasing in volume at an amazing rate.
Stopping and whirling around, heart racing while her mind caught up, her dusty brown eyes showed visible relief at the red uniform. Hesitating and allowing herself a brief look to her companions, she steeled herself and took a few steps towards their fellow survivor, waiting for her to catch up.
"Yes, this is an escape. Uhm..." Biting the inside of her cheek, Evalyn interlaced her fingers limply before her, waiting. She shouldn't have been surprised to see another red shirt, seeing as it was only the law of nature: only the strongest survived. The thought perturbed her deeply, but she wouldn't let it show; she didn't want to seem weaker than she already was.
Name: Key and Loc Destiny (AKA: the Fates or the Seers)
Age: 11
Sex: Boy and Girl
Race: Human
Abilities: Key: She can see into the future. Loc: He can see into the past. To work their powers, they usually have to look at someone straight in the eye, but it puts strain on their eyesight, so they usually do it by touch. If they combine their powers, they can see into the soul of a person. When a person is sleeping, the twins can see into the person's dreams.
They can also use their power to tell the future of a place or a country, usually by touch, but if it's a country they've never been to, they have to see a map.
Weapons: Staffs
Appearance: Both: Androgynous in a young way, long white hair, large grey eyes, pale skin, thin, short for their age, and identical appearances. Wears plain white shirt and white baggy pants with white slippers, as well as a thin white blindfold over their eyes. Key is a girl, Loc is a boy.
Personality: Quiet, more mature than you would think, yet appearing to be trusting. They are quite secretive and would prefer to slip out without telling people. Loc is more aggressive and defiant. Key is submissive and insecure. Key is the dominant of the two, though neither of them can be away from the other for very long. Both holds the secrets and pasts of every person they ever looked at or touched. Both prefer independence to following a crowd, but will do so if they are convinced that they should follow.
History: Both have been at the institution for all their lives, being born there. Their mother was a worker at the institution, and after giving birth she died. They were... special cases at the institution. Luckily they were hiding from their caretakers near the experimentation area when it blew. When they saw the survivors, they knew that they had to take their chance.
Loc looked around a pile of rubble at the four people, his mind thinking. He knew that their pasts weren't all good, but he was making calculations. "Loc, should we join them?" Key asked quietly.
"Well... they're all strong... but I can't get a clear reading of that one girl, what does she look like to you?" Loc looked at his sister, hesitantly carrying a staff. She lifted up her blindfold and stared.
"She... will be of help. That's what I think. But..." Key grabbed Loc's hand suddenly. "Lets look at her together." They stared and nodded to each other. "She looks good. Lets join them."
They crept from behind the rubble, trying not to make a sound, until they were right on top of the people.
"Hello." they said in unison.
"Key-Loc" they replied in unison. "Umm... we're... what did that guy say? 'Special cases'?" Loc asked Key, who shrugged. "You an' you an' you have aggressive type powers, I can tell because of your shirts," Loc continued. "An' you have a defensive power, an' we have seer powers." He proclaimed proudly, acting like the kid he was. Key stayed a little behind him, looking at Cael, holding her arms because of the cold aura.
Evalyn nearly jumped out of her skin at yet another sudden arrival; she hadn't heard them come at all. Turning her head, she was even more surprised to see the two pale youngsters, small and fragile looking like porcelain dolls.
"Nice to meet you two, too...I'm Evalyn." While she may have been weak, meek, and easily flustered, Loc and Key were at just the right age to put her more at ease. Since everything was spilling over at once within her, she took the liberty to introduce her first companions. "That's Matt," she shyly extended a hand his way, "and this is Adam," the motion was politely repeated, albeit a bit awkwardly.
One blink. Two. Evalyn's mouth was gaping slightly, but quickly clicked shut as she found her manners. Could they read minds? No, no, that shouldn't work on her. Well, she hoped not. Her cheeks began to flush, brows knitting together as her head unintentionally tilted.
"What...how do you know?" The boy had even gone so far as to bring up her mother, puzzling her further. What about her mother? They did say they were called a "special case"... Perhaps...no, certainly not! Rubbing her eyes, she shook her head, moreso for herself than anything in particular. Matt was the people person, not her.
"N-not really..." Flitting from her eyes to her hair, her fingers set to work on the tangles, a mundane and thoughtless action that had always worked to sooth her. She couldn't remember anyone else ever playing with her hair, but it was a gesture she enjoyed, even if she was the only one doing it.
Looking up at Matt, her hands slowly dropped to clasp her elbows, a nervous pink replacing the unhealthy pallor of her face. She really had gotten out of hand, hadn't she? So many questions and sudden entrances brought out a side of her she hadn't properly encountered before, which was unnerving and quite embarrassing.
At Cael's outburst, she once again turned to look, a bit confused. Didn't he compliment her? Although he did tack on the comment on her chill...but she was chilly; Evalyn could feel it too. What an odd bunch.
Sex:Male
Abilities:Split has two lines of abilities effectively splitting him in two mentaly Predator and Pacifist. He has predatory side his body taking on animalistic traits nightvision, sharp canine like teeth, and his physical abilities are tripled along with similar animal like senses, and healing. While his pasifist side is purely defensive more human only capable of kinetic disruption, aka an invisible sheild, over use will cause cerebral hemraging,followed soon after by death.
Weapon:Anything sharp preferably a knife,sometimes his teeth.
Appearence:the predator side of split is more physical than his counter part, long unkept black hair dangling infront of glowing green cat-like eyes. his darker skin and animal like teeth are also trademarks of this side of him. While the other has platinum blonde hair a thin body and a much more appealing face still with green eyes only much less vibrant. Wears red but his predatory side has distaste for shoes and most shirts, inorder to keep trak he was fitted with a collar that would indicate threat status, or the docile status with a bright neon clasp in the front, blinks when a switch is about to occur.
Personality:Unstable mix of a kind young man that would sacrifise himself for others without hesitation and refuse to commit any sort of violent act, and a merciless predator that care for little more than revenge and sating his bloodlust. He drifts between these two at random, but Split always refesr to himself as 'we' accepting his nature this transition is often painful and frequent without a steady administering of tranquilizers and suppressants.
History:at first he was just a kid with a split personality disorder seeing a shrink only when he was found standing over his psychiatrist with a bloody pen in hand and a dead body underfoot attacking wildly, this was when he was seven years old. He'd been in custody eversince his random outbursts have been a headache for the insitute he's injured many a gaurd and killed a few scientist that got too close, but his others side is well liked until his collar starts to blink then the injections came shortly after.
The light on his collar blinking wildly "NO we are not through yet!!We just started having fun!!" He buried his head in his hand and curled up facing the ground his body growing thin and pale as his hair faded to blonde, a relaxed feeling washing through soon after as Split rose again "We're sorry, we hope we didn't startle anyone, we are Split, and we thankyou for our freedom." standing straight he adressed them looking a little nervous. "We think we should go east, we think that we smelled smoke, natural smoke like a fireplace." Split mentioned still slightly nervouse since none had decided to speak to him quite yet. "No, to the east lays a factory. We must go into the city, since it is there we can find shelter, in a run down shop near the edge," they spoke in unison before breaking off. Loc looked over at the new comer, Split. "You have a Mr. Hyde in you..." he said softly, his vision blurring from using his second sight too much. Key put her arm around him and held him steady.
Evalyn didn't really care where they ended up by now, as long as it was safe from prying eyes. She was beat, mentally and physically. Looking to their newer, more...intimidating companion, she opened her mouth to speak, closing it as the twins gave their own opinions. Final introductions could wait, she supposed.
"To the shop, then?" She chewed her lip, tucking some hair behind her ear. Loc wasn't looking so hot himself, and his sister was steadying him. "Are you alright, Loc?" She approached him and crouched to his level, feeling as if she could stay there forever and sleep. Still, her concern outshone her weary body's needs, and so she felt the need to tend to him.
To this, Evalyn offered a weak, fleeting smile, something only for their eyes to see. "Well, we should hurry, then. You need rest." Heck, they all did. After surviving amongst the rubble and walking all this way, she was sure a lot of them needed sleep more than she did.
Blinking in surprise, Evalyn stood up straight, seeing Split offer his aid. Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde, at first it didn't come to her. Her education at the Institution wasn't what immediately rang out, after all. So this boy had two personas... She hoped they wouldn't have to see much of the first one she'd laid eyes on. If he couldn't control himself, she couldn't trust him, not like this.
Still, she had little choice on the matters at hand now.
Adam followed quietly as the group walked further out of the trees and towards the city; once more people had begun showing up so frequently he had elected to stand back and observe the new arrivals and obtain a better impression of them before speaking.
He looked over at the first new arrival, Cael, first; her water based powers conflicted with Matt’s fire based powers, and seeing as how the nature of a persons abilities seemed related to their personality, they clashed with each other as well. Though whether this contrast would be beneficial or a hindrance to them he did not know.
The twins, Key and Loc, were two of the stranger subjects he’d heard about or met from the institute. Their powers seemed more like two halves of the same power, and they were at their most powerful when they worked in unison, although it seemed to drain more of their energy to do so. Key seemed like the more reserved and mature of the two, while Loc was more exuberant and had the unfortunate bad habit of reading a persons past and then sharing it with the group.
Lastly there was the appropriately named Split; he appeared to have two completely separate identities, and could even change appearance to match them. The current personality was rather pleasant, polite and completely none threatening; the other however, the one that presented itself when they first met was much more animalistic and bloodthirsty. The two personalities seemed to have to fight to take control, however it was only a matter of time before the other side came out again; Adam would just need to keep an eye on the collar he wore around his neck, that seemed to give a warning when a change of personality was about to take place.
Adam broke out of his reverie as they neared the city; he would need to focus to survive in this new environment. Hopefully the maze of streets and buildings would keep them hidden, but if they were found out it would be much harder for them to fight or run in such a condensed, populated area.
Split followed after Key with Loc on his back, a little more at ease now that at least someone trusted him. "We too are Hungry, but we think somethings wrong here it doesn't feel right." Split didn't like the city nor did he like being around people he always felt afraid that he might hurt someone, his Mr. Hyde as Loc said wasn't completely bloodthirsty as he appeared but he wouldn't hesitate to kill if it suited him, that scared him.
At least he felt better with people to protect, maybe he could make up for his other half , Loc and Key would never see harm as long as he could help it. Maybe he could find tranquilizers or even a muscle relaxant that always gave him more time, but he wasn't sure that he should ask the others.
Evalyn took time to soak up everyone else's comments, a spark of an idea coming to her at Cael's observation. Hope pooled in her chest, lightening her fatigue, as she realized how she could be of use. "I could get food and clothes for everyone...I mean, it would take some time, but no one would see, so it'd be safer for all of you."
It would take some time because the fastest she could go while hiding was walking speed, but still, she had found a purpose. If she could find a proper store, she could grab a bag of some sort and fill it with what they needed. Heck, she could do it a few times, once she got some sleep.
Looking to each person in quiet turn, Evalyn began to think. Most of them were filthy from the Institution's ashy death, all of them should be hungry and tired. She didn't have a real solution for cleaning up, but if she got food tonight and clothes tomorrow...maybe things would work out.
Key shifted her feet nervously. She looked closely at the city and knew that if they weren't careful they could fall into the hands of the institution again. She looked back at the group, still worried about Loc. She didn't know much about Split yet, but didn't really want to worry about him yet. He seemed alright. Adam was trusting enough, and Matt was going to become a handful. The two girls on the other hand seemed sweet.
While Key thought about their companions, Loc dreamed strange things. Even without knowing it, his power was working on Split, and like osmosis, Loc dreamed of the memories Split probably couldn't remember...
When they got to the city limits, Key looked around and tugged on Matt's shirt. "We need to go down that alley," she told him, pointing her finger to a small dark alley way to the left.
Evalyn was nibbling upon the tip of her thumb when she made up her mind. If her soft spoken words were too quiet to make any impact, then she would...she would prove herself with her actions, that's what she would do. Nervously looking between each face, trying to discern where their attentions were, she deemed it safe to hide.
Concentrating, she felt the familiar fog drift across her senses, slowing her movements to a calm walk as her mind broke to the surface. Success! As long as no one had been watching her prior, it didn't matter what she did now. Evalyn could scream, cry, poke, prod, anything at all; no one would notice as long as she didn't move too fast.
"I'll do it. I...I can do this." It was uttered against her fingertips as she broke away from the group, terrified to go out on her own but determined with sickening strength. The feeling of moving while in her hiding state made her think of walking through water, but completely submerged. It wasn't hard to breath, no, but her movements were almost sluggish in appearance.
Pointing herself to what she assumed was the heart of the town, Evalyn steeled herself and moved on until the footsteps of her companions could no longer be heard. City scents began to hit her the deeper she went, until she finally broke out into the hustle and bustle of people. She fought the urge to run, instead joining the general flow of movement, looking for any sort of clue that would lead her to food.
Adam examined the confined alleyway as they walked deeper into the city; they had managed to avoid being seen so far, mostly due to Key leading them safely through the buildings with her seer’s abilities, though some part of it was most likely luck. He couldn’t help but feel slightly paranoid in these surroundings; he knew that this city was the only patch of civilisation for mile around, other than the institute itself, and was therefore the most likely place any escapees would run to in the event of an escape. Adam couldn’t help but think that sooner or later they would be discovered and would be required to fight for their continued freedom.
He ceased his thoughts for the time being to look over their assorted group once more; the various abilities possessed by their group would undoubtedly be enough to handle any recovery team sent against them. The twin seers should be able to give advanced warning of any threat to them, and with Matt, Cael and himself controlling fire, water and gravity respectively he doubted anybody could stand up to them in a fair fight, and that was without adding the enigma that was Split to the equation, although Adam was counting on the fact that his bloodlust would be directed at his captors rather than them when the time came.
As he looked around there relatively small group in the dark he become aware of the fact that they were missing a member. He realised relatively quickly that it was Evalyn who was the missing party and relaxed slightly, he’d noticed quite early on when it was still just the three of them that he would sometimes forget she was there, only to notice her again later, apparently her abilities activated automatically when she was nervous; however he couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t the case here, the disappearances became less frequent as she became more accustomed to being around other people, especially when the younger subjects began showing up. He stopped walking for a second, falling slightly behind the group as they carried on, before speaking up.
"It's so busy and big." Moving along the sidewalk, the petite teen was brought to pause, staring through sliding glass doors. It looked to be an all-purpose shop, and so, with a hopeful smile she stepped inside. Maybe she wouldn't need to come back for clothes tomorrow after all.
The numerous aisles and display spaces made her feel like a mouse in a maze, utterly lost and confused. It took her a moment to adjust the the cold air and bustle, but while she let it set in, Evalyn did notice signs dangling from the ceiling. Clothes seemed closer, so she followed the arrow dutifully until she reached her goal.
The endless amount of patterns, sizes, and styles quickly had her fretting, digging through racks and guessing at how tall or wide her brief company was. Evalyn went for things less flashy, wanting something that would let them blend in, if nothing else. As she searched, she noticed backpacks on hooks across the aisle, and didn't hesitate to grab the deepest one she could find.
All of the clothes were stuffed at the bottom, taking up a good amount of space but still leaving her room for a decent amount of food. Yawning widely, hand over her mouth, the waifish girl shouldered her load and pinpointed her arrow, walking along once more.
Clothing gave way to produce, then numerous parallel aisles, all boasting the occupants of their shelves with dangling signs. After much thought, and wandering, Evalyn settled on simple things: bread, lunch meat, canned goods, and a can opener. She was sure Matt could handle making a fire to heat stuff up, and it would last longer canned, she believed.
By the time she left the store, night had fallen, and with a heavy backpack and a weary head, she began walking to the edge of the city. Key had claimed that's where their shelter would be, and Evalyn trusted the child's words; she just hoped she could find it without the group.
Matt, unable to sit still, wandered back and forth across the room. He'd poke a rocking chair into movemnt on one side, wander back over to the other to see what was under a sheet, and then come back to keep the rocking chair in motion. As darkness fell he took a small splintery chair and swashed against the concrete floor, piling up the pieces in the center of the room. He conjured a floating ball of fire in his palm and let it hover down to the wood which caught immediately. The result was a modest fire that kept someof the shadows at bay. Once she had reached the quiet edges of town, Evalyn released her hiding with an exhausted sigh. It didn't take much effort to hide normally, but she'd never done it with so many people around...or with the title of an escapee. A faint glow from dirty windows caught her eye, and throwing that slow blanket on once more, she carefully approached.
Peering through the filmy glass, she was elated to see her companions. Dropping her guard once more, she entered the abandoned shop, uttering a faint, "Hello..." Adjusting the straps of the backpack, she walked over to Matt's side, sliding it off to rest beside him with a humble expression.
"I...I brought food and clothes for everyone. I'm sorry I left so suddenly. Oh, uh, I'm also sorry for taking so long; I tried to be fast." Even though the room was musty, the fire Matt made was a plus. Looking around once, Evalyn gave up on the furniture, instead seating herself on the floor as close to the heat as she could manage without getting burnt.
Name: Eric (last name unknown)
Age: Sixteen
Sex: Male
Ht: 6'2
Wt: 220 lbs
Abilities: He can lower (but not heighten) the temperature of water molecules in the air to make liquid water and ice as well. This is a highly developed ability and if given enough focus and energy, can create incredible amounts of water. It's highly risky to imbibe so much however, and can cause significant injury to himself and other trying.
His other ability is to excite the positively and negatively charged ions in the air, in effect creating lightning. This is very difficult for him, much more so than his other power but it is also more destructive where the other has practical uses. When he is threatened his skin automatically becomes statically charged, giving him an advantage in hand to hand combat but it is useless if firearms are being used. He is immune to electrical charges and cannot be harmed by electricity. This doesn't extend to massive heat however.
Appearance: He has oceanic eyes that appear deeply green at times like a sea that is churning, and almost bluish at others. His hair is cropped and brown, and since he was only recently caught by the Institution, he has not been severely affected by the horrors there. His face has the beginnings of handsome adulthood, with sharpening features and wise eyes. He's quick to smile and usually prefers to wear clothing that is light colored.
Personality: He is somewhat unpredictable, characteristic of a body of water. Sometimes the wrong thing can set him off like a keg of gunpowder, and sometimes he is more passive, laidback to the point of total enlightenment. Wisdom is one of his many gifts however, and he is an excellent strategist. For the most part, his temper is very temporary, and his forgiveness comes easily. He is a very compassionate person and able to relate to people, but sometimes he is too upset to care about anyone but himself.
Bio: He doesn't fully understand the extent of his powers yet, but he does well to hide them. Since the escape from the Institution he has laid low fairly well. He has decent survival skills and enough street smarts to take care of himself, but he's not particularly safe just yet. As a fighter he risks revealing his abilities. He is rather fearful of fire and heat though, and tends to avoid both.
Eric was fiddling with a loose thread on the inside of his pocket, smiling lightly under the hood of his green sweatshirt. His hands were getting warm in the pouch so he removed them, letting the cool air play over his skin. A contented look comes over his face, but he still remains aware that if he grows to complacent, he can always be captured again. The Institution was not over, even if it was cracked.
He was aware that time was passing, and the night air would become humid. He could smell it in the moisture. And he was becoming fatigued. If he was ambushed, he would need all his energy to evade pursuit. And to rest, he would need four walls of shelter. Any of these abandoned buildings would do, but he'd have to choose carefully, for the Institution might be hunting him, but it wasn't the only danger out there.
Turning as if he had meant to on a doorstep to his right, he tests the door. It's open. Cautiously, he pushes it open and steps inside. He shuts it behind him. The inside appeared to have once been a furniture store.
Adam followed the along with the rest of the group towards the old furniture store, stopping outside briefly to take one quick look around before entering last. Every surface in the old building was coated in thick dust, the floor; the counters and any remaining furniture were covered.
He looked around for a place to rest for a moment and mused briefly with the idea of wiping the dust off of one of the chairs and sitting down before dismissing it; any chair left in this place was probably so worn down and weathered that they would collapse under any weight.
Instead he leant against a wall and watched as matt created a small fire in the centre of the room. Idly he registered that this was probably unwise, the light given off by the fire would attract attention, not to mention that indoor fires were generally a bad thing; then again he guessed keeping the cold at bay and morale up outweighed the risks for now.
His attention was drawn towards the entrance as a nervous looking Evalyn walked in carrying a heavy bag, presumably filled with supplies for them all. He considered berating her for leaving without telling anyone, especially in circumstances such as this, but instead decided on a more ‘polite’ response to her arrival. He opened his mouth to speak before being distracted as he heard the door being pushed open once more. His first thought was Split, returning from his attempt to locate Evalyn and was therefore surprised to see another unknown individual walked in instead. He looked him over quickly, assessing any threat; no Institute clothing, so not a subject, no uniform or visible weapon, and he doubted any pursuers would be playing it so subtly, instead he must just be a lost civilian or something close. He decided that until given any reason not to he would treat the newcomer politely and try to simply steer him away.
A small smile quirks his mouth. "Indeed, I must have missed the sign." Folding his arms, he plants his feet.
Split had found Evalyn as she dropped from her hiding spot but he kept hidden, distracted by something else Evalyn was safely on her way back, so he decided to take a look.
A few alley's back he saw four hoodlums beating on a man who didn't look like he belonged with a black business suit. This looked like fun, Split rolled over the edge and down into the street quitely landing behind them, wrapping an arm around the closest's neck squeezing and lifting him up off his feet until he heard it pop. This one had a knife Split smiled picking it up and driving it down into the spine of the next and taking another into a head lock squeezing until he fell limp, the last one was the only to notice him "We're having fun now, try not to ruin it." He mocked calling this one on only for him to start running, Split leapt after him digging his teeth deep into the throat and wrestling him to the ground before releasing, slamming the lifeless body downward before returning to the business man.
Frightened of this brutal and blood soaked young man "Y-you saved me??!"
"For last." Split whipered with a smile....
Moments later he followed the scent of his fellow experiments to the abandoned store now wearing an armani jacket and pants minus the button up shirt or shoes. An unknown man entered ahead of Split drifting down from the roof again following quietly behind before rounding his arm around his neck with a quick sqeeze and whispering into his ear "Are you supposed to be here?" noticing a familiar smell he pushed him forward into the room smiling sadistically.
Almost nodding off with her chin rested on her knees, Evalyn immediately perked up upon hearing another enter. Adam addressed the common looking man, and at first she was afraid that he had followed her from the city, but quickly dismissed the idea. She had hidden all through the city, so that didn't make sense. Maybe he was a homeless person?
The intruder's smug retort to Adam's dissuasion made that assumption disappear. He sounded too confident to have been without shelter long. Tightening her grip around her legs, she watched him, eyes widening when Split's "Mr. Hyde" form shoved the other teen deeper inside. The finely tailored suit was not lost on her, for it was sporting flecks of blood.
Frozen like a deer in headlights, she silently stared, waiting for one of them to make a move.
Rather than turn to take in Split, Eric goes along with the rather foul creature that they pass off as a human. "I wasn't aware that it was forbidden to enter an abandoned building inhabited by ex-Institutionals like myself." Since he knows he's in no real danger quite yet, his static defense has not activated itself at the moment. He smiles expectantly. "If you'll please release me, I'll properly introduce myself."
Then his mind focuses. When she had drawn close to embrace him, he had distinctly scented the telltale water, like a crashing wave of seawater sounding in his nose. 'Can she sense my abilities and see we are alike?' he wonders silently.
"I'm Eric, by the way." He manages to catch his balance and with it, his composure.
"Corn, ew, carrots, soup, oh hey..." He pulled out a can of clam chowder and wrestled it open with the can opener, holding it over the fire with his bare hand. "Evalyn you are my savior". "There's some ravioli too..." Cael's intrusion upon the tense moment relaxed Evalyn momentarily, although she was still wary of Split. At least the newcomer wasn't a threat. Casting her sad and heavy gaze upon Split once more, Evalyn silently begged him with her eyes, simply wanting peace for the night.
Giving up on the situation and deciding she would rather be killed by Split than captured alive, the exhausted blond curled up next to Matt with uncharacteristic boldness. Evalyn was too tired to feel embarrassed by his proximity or her bemused range of emotions, and tumbled swiftly into slumber after a mumbled, "Bed time..."
Key mumbled and rolled over in her sleep before waking with a start. Tears rolled down her cheeks and her face scrunched in this expression of sadness. There was no time given for a proper reply from any party as bullets shattered the windows suddenly. The sound of heavy footfalls rang around the store, both inside and out as the Institution's cleanup squad sought their targets. A few rooms down, the sound of splitting wood could reach the escapees' ears as door after door was kicked in.
Evalyn sat up, surprisingly out of focus despite the horrible ruckus. She recognized what was going on around her, but it wasn't registering, so she was very placid, if not confused. "What's going on...?"
Glancing over to the door, her gaze was fixated on the splintering wood as if it was moving in slow motion. A man stood upon the wooden remains, and he pointed his gun at her, all bulletproof armor and bug-eyed mask. A bullet flew past her head and embedded itself in the wall behind her.
Everything clicked into place far too fast, and Evalyn was no longer tired. They were under attack.
He blew into it and a bll of fire erupted in the inside. He hurled the aluminum grenade at the man coming through the door. The can smacked him squarley in the face, hard enough to confuse him but not enough to really injure him.
We have to get out of here. he thought, looking around for an exit. he knew he wouldn't be able to do the same thing he had at the institue or he would kill all the other escapees. An idea hit him like a flaming can of soup.
Evalyn wasn't going to lie; she was terrified, and in more then a little shock. Up front confrontation wasn't something she had experience with, at all. As Matt yanked her to her feet it was all she could do to stay standing as her body shook with fear and adrenaline.
Still, she had enough sense about her to listen to orders, and so, tearing her eyes away from the gunman, she concentrated hard on hiding. While she didn't know what he was planning on, or how her hiding would help, as long as it got everyone out safe she didn't care.
Her wild eyes found Loc, then Key, and she prayed to whatever divinity out there that they'd make it out of this alive and free. Dying would be fine on her part as long as at least the twins made it out. Looking back to Matt, she resisted the urge to take hold of him, afraid of what might happen once he too forgot about her.
Eric made an unusual snarling noise as he spun and lowered his body, extending his hands at his sides. His eyes seemed to glow as he called forth his abilities, the air around him cooling as frost started to crystallize on his skin. A very sharp icicle forms in his palm, his hand closing over it. Another one appears in his other hand, extending to a balanced length of three feet.
Glass breaks, and a three round burst of bullets whizzes past his shoulder, coming from the left. Another trio zooms past his ribs, grazing him from the right.
He blinks, the air becoming alive with energy. Seeing the smoking gun in the darkness outside the window, his lip curls, uncurling a finger in the direction of the soldier. A small, jagged bolt of electricity emits from the fingertip and hits the goon right between the eyes, frying his brain. He drops.
Eric grunted as he lost his balance, falling to one knee. That took quite a bit of energy on his part. The other soldier seizes upon the opening, setting up for the incapacitating shot.
Eric rolls behind the table next to him and kicks it over, praying that the metal tabletop will at least divert another burst. That's all he would need.
As more men poured into the building, it seemed others lined the outside, taking whatever openings they could to shoot and possibly terminate the kids.
Evalyn allowed herself to be dragged by the twins, and dropped to their level once they reached a corner. She figured with their combined powers her own abilities were null, and that didn't bother her.
Chaos was unraveling all around them, as the newest, Eric, fended off the first man from the door and Split sought to protect the twins. Evalyn looked torn, but placed a hand upon both of their cheeks as she steeled herself. "If Split can protect you, please go with him." She wanted to ask what she should do, but an idea was already vaguely glimmering as she eyed the first man's corpse and the gun that had fallen at his side.
Adam was surprised at how co-ordinated the Institutes clean up squad were; not only had they been able to organise such a large force so quickly but they had found them less than a few hours after the almost complete destruction of the building they were held in.
He quickly assessed the situation, Matt and Split were dealing with the few soldiers trying to come in through the back of the store, Evalyn and the twins were taking cover behind what protection they could find while the new guy had just taken out one of the soldiers out front and was now hiding behind a table while his friends tried to return the favour.
One soldier jumped through the shattered storefront window and aimed his assault rifle at him. Adam raised one hand and used his ability to increase the gravity on the gun drastically as the weapon was ripped from the soldiers hands and onto the floor; the man struggled the lift the now impossibly heavy weapon off the floor for a couple of seconds before being flying backwards into the wall just behind him and being suspended there as Adam increased the gravity being exerted by the wall. With another wave of his hand the dropped assault rifle slid across the floor to Adam’s feet; he picked the weapon up before quickly shooting the suspended soldier in the legs and letting him drop to the floor where he struggled to move before giving up. Adam turned around and shouted to the other escapees.
Eric made his choice between staying in his position and moving. He figured that if he became pinned down, it would be all to easy to subdue him or terminate him. Either way, he needed to get the hell out of there. So he stood, threw the icicle at the other soldier to divert his attention, and sprinted for the armed gunman, tackling him as another icicle formed in his hand. He drove it into the man's flesh, underneath the collarbone. The body shook for a moment, then was still, the mans eyes looking with horror into Eric's, slowly dulling into shock.
Eric shivered. He had paralyzed the poor bastard, severing his spinal cord. Probably only partial, but potentially fatal if he didn't recieve help. Sighing, the threat neutralized, Eric picked himself up off the soldier and took his weapon. He had no training with it, but he was uncomfortable with the thought of leaving an armed enemy at his back. Tossing the heavy gun into a shadowed corner, he makes his way slowly through the chaos, trying to piece together a way to get everyone out of there.
The thought of the soldier nagged at him. At least the man would feel no pain, though he himself was probably comforted little by that fact.
Eric ducked as he heard yet another commando locking his weapon into place. The bullets screamed over his head, and he knew he had moved just in time. Throwing out his hand, he concentrated on the man's fingers, knowing how sensitive they would be to the frigid ice. As expected, the commando kept his dicipline, but the numbing pain in his hands made it nearly impossible to aim correctly. Eric rushed him and placed his static charged hands on the soldier's face, jolting him much as an electric eel would.
Eric saw Adam and rushed to his side, placing his back to the other man's. "Any exits that might not be blocked?" He asked urgently, his eyes watching for another attack.
"Alright." Evalyn didn't really understand which decision would be wrong or right, but she couldn't be dead weight anymore. Adam and Eric were in the action, and Matt was willing to give his all for them, she knew, and so the blonde did not ignore the heavy gun that skittered over by her feet.
Bending down, she took it into her hands and walked over to the doorway. Adam had said he wanted survivors for questioning, but that didn't change the fact that she had to shoot them. She knew nothing about killing, and possibly less about disabling someone, but she would try her best.
More footsteps echoed down the hall, but these were more cautious, aware that their opponents were also aware. Biting hard upon her lip, she approached the men as they slunk forward, raising the gun and firing into the man's arm. The kick from the fire startled her, and she almost dropped it from the sound alone, but tightening her grip she continued forward.
The man and his companion were confused, she knew, but she couldn't give herself time to think about it. Approaching them, not wanting to miss, she began shooting at his legs, his other arm, anything to keep him still.
His companion had begun to fire at random, afraid yet unaware of her as he sought to kill this invisible force. A bullet grazed her side, and pain like fire spread there. She pushed the gun past his vest and fired into his stomach, tears running down her face. Her weapon clicked hollowly as her finger yanked the trigger, and moments later it clattered to the floor.
She took the men's weapons and continued walking, spattered in their blood from her close, much too close, range. Evalyn hoped they would survive, but really had no idea on the matter. She just hoped she was...doing the right thing.
((I thought so too. ): Well, here I go. x3))
As she continued on through the soldiers, Evalyn began to notice they carried more than just their guns. Some had knives, and after she cleared a smoke-filled room, she discovered the most peculiar thing of all. Small round balls with wicks poking from the top were in pouches at some of their sides, and judging from the fact that she almost tripped over the husk of one, she believed them to be the cause of the smoke. Maybe the others could hide as well, with these...
Deciding that they might come in handy if she could get back to Matt after this, she slung the pouched belt over her shoulder, for it was far too large to stay around her waist. Coughing into her hand she stumbled back into the smoky room, not coming across anymore men. What were they doing now? Surely they most be planning something.
Her thoughts were cut short as her foot caught on the rug, sending her careening into the floor. Evalyn managed to save face by throwing her arms out in the way, but she'd still managed to bite her lip, which was now beginning to bleed. It didn't matter, her side was probably still bleeding too. Shouldering the pain, but happy to find the air clearer at floor level, the bloodstained blonde began to feel around for what she'd fallen over.
First her fingers met carpet, ratty and old, but as she felt farther along she found a bump beneath the carpet. After a few fumbled yanks the cold concrete floor was once again upon her, but then she felt...wood? Wiping her watery eyes and coughing more against the slowly dissipating smoke, Evalyn was elated to have found what seemed to be a door.
Dropping the gun she had been toting around and adjusting the belt on her shoulder, she grabbed the iron handle and began to pull, falling back onto her butt as it opened to her attentions. A wave of cold, stale air rushed up to meet her, followed by a stench she automatically associated with the more neglected subjects back at the Institution. Waste.
Slamming the door shut once more and hurriedly covering it with the carpet, Evalyn tottered to her feet, beginning to run despite the fact that she would no longer be hidden. This could be their way out! This could be escape! Crying tears of relief, she continued to stumble forward, slowing once the sound of gunshot reached her ears again.
No, she couldn't be stupid about this; she couldn't screw up. She had to be careful, because it wasn't just her life on the line.
"Slow and steady," the shaky teen murmured, "slow and steady."
Hope sparked in her heart at she spotted a friendly (albeit terrifying at the moment) flame, but she did not break her concentration. "Slow and steady for everyone..."
Once she got close enough, she let down her defenses, yelling to get his attention. "Matt! Matt, we need to get the others, right now!" It was strange, hearing herself yell, but that didn't make her stop.
HE took a breath in and the fire reignighted, fury in his eyes. "GO, I'll catch up" he
Outside, the soldiers had begun to congeal as their commanders barked orders. The outside ring of men had done their job, both keeping the kiddies in and applying explosives to the outside of the building. However, no one would know that, aside from the twins, before it was far too late.
Evalyn was beginning to get desperate, the feeling worsening once Matt became enraptured with his rage. "Matt, please, we all have to go right now! There's an exit, and it's safe, and we have to go!" Standing up to Matt had her heart racing twenty times fast, or maybe that was the adrenaline rush, but all she could think about was survival.
Pulling the belt from her shoulder, she approached Matt, staying low just in case rogue bullets decided to come her way. "You have to take these, we have to get together, and you have to use them, Matt, please just come on with us." It felt as if the whole world was listening to her yell, listening to her fight, and it would almost be exhilarating if she wasn't so upset and quaking down to her knobby little knees.
Outside, the men were beginning to retreat a safe distance--readying the detonation.
Adam fired another burst through the shattered store front window at the retreating soldiers; he’d taken two down already, one of which was definitely dead. The fact that they were giving up so easily concerned him, they must have know as well as he did that they were barely holding out against them; Split was still more or less paralyzed trying to keep that forcefield of his going, Eric still hadn’t recovered from his initial attack, Matt had been hurt and he himself had been grazed by a few too many near misses. Obviously they were aware of some fact that the rest of them were ignorant to. Deciding it would be best to leave sooner rather than later, Adam began searching for a way out that was not currently obstructed by armed soldiers.
An answer came in the form of Evalyn as she alerted their attention to a trap door she’d found that, judging by the stench and stale air, led to a sewer; not the preferred method of escape but it would do. Adam walked over a grabbed the soldier he’d shot in the legs earlier by his vest and dragged him over to the rug before pulling it back and flipping open the hatch, recoiling slightly from the sudden draft of air. There was no ladder to speak of, at least not anymore, and the dark shaft gave no indication of how deep the drop was; Adam dragged the soldier once more and held him over the hole.
‘If you survive this, yell back so we know its safe’ Adam let go of the man and waited as he fell down with flailing arms into the sewer shaft. He disappeared from sight and a second later an amplified splash sounded out.
‘How do you feel?’
‘Abused and damp’
‘Good enough’
Matt pitched another fireball out of the window, lighting up the night for a moment. There was a bang, another shot grazing past his shoulder. He winced, looking down at Evalyn. He could recognize what was in her hand, a belt of grenades. He knew he was a sitting duck where he was now, lighted by the burning room from behind and seen by any soldiers below. And in the back of his mind he knew there was something strange going on...
There was blood dripping from his gun wounds, sizzling in the fire on his body. "Okay." Matt said, stumbling off the sill. The flames went out abruptly and he took the grenades from Evalyn, who he realized had done very much. "Let's go."
((and now we can wait for the others...))
Split had to hold still for the gunfire to stop he wouldn't take a single risk while extending his protection to both Loc and Key. Once they were clear he rushed toward the nearest safe place pulling the twins along stopping to sheild yet another spray of bullets, and continuing toward the next safest place outside as Evalyn said.
Relief flooded her veins when Matt finally relented, seeming to know more about the belt's many options than she ever would. Reaching over, she unbuttoned the pouch with the strange, smoke-producing balls and pulled one out to hold out towards Matt.
"I'm pretty sure they make smoke; it's really thick. If you light them at the top," Evalyn fingered the wick, "I think that's what will set them off. They won't see us go if we use them, so let's go!" She pressed the smoke bomb into Matt's hand, hot compared to her clammy skin, and closed his fingers around it while quickly explaining the secret door Adam had intelligently pursued.
As Split took the twins after Adam, to escape, Evalyn hollered at Eric and Cael, urging them to follow before nodding briefly to Matt. They could create their distraction and go, hopefully to safety.
Eric dashed over to the manhole as the smoke bomb distraction was going off. The smoke was an irritant, but as a further deterrent to keep the soldiers off their asses, he extended his hand, closing his eyes, focusing. Gallons of watter started pouring, leaking from the walls. Cracks in the ceiling started to appear, the floor coated with a thick dissolution of water.
It appeared to be raining inside the cluttered quarters of the shot-up furniture store. The droplets became icicles, the floor a deathtrap. He made that ice deadly, the kind that can shatter trees in the cold winters of the north.
Blocking the entrances to the house, he waited, waited to be the last one to enter the sewers. He meant to seal the manhole once everyone was safely inside.
Matt took the smoke bomb from Evalyn, pinching the wick between his fingers. It ignited and he dropped it and another on the floor at his feet. The wicks were short and they went off quickly, filling the room with thick black smoke. Matt took Evalyn's arm and went in the general direction he'd seen Split and Adam run as ice and water began to flow across the floor. He almost fell into the trapdoor because he didn't see it.
"I'll lower you down." he told Evalyn, taking her hands. Without any sort of warning he swung her down into the hole, lowering her as far as he could before letting her go. He looked around the smoke filled room, his eyes burning, to make sure everyone was in. He could see that Eric intended to seal the doorway shut behind them.
"Look out below!" he yelled, and threw himself down into the dark.
((Nah, I don't mind having Ev dragged along. Makes things easier, and faster. :3))
Evalyn allowed herself to be pulled along, happy to finally be on the move. Everyone seemed to know where they were going as they followed each other, and she was thankful for that. In fact, it seemed they were the last ones to go, aside from Eric, who was waiting at the opening.
The darkness of the sewers was intimidating, although she didn't get a chance to look at it long, for Matt was taking her hands and swinging her down, much to her terror. The fact that the darkness seemed solid was what got her at first, but the lack of warning from her pyro companion also helped her unease. There was a momentary feeling of floating in nothingness as he released her, but the sensation was fleeting as she landed with a splash.
Once again unprepared, she had thrown herself out of the way as Matt yelled down a warning, body displeased from the mental and emotional strain, alongside her initial fatigue, seeing as she was not a very strong girl. Her limits were not hard to push. After she heard Matt's own wet landing, she straightening up, letting her eyes adjust to the dim light while she still had it and bumping into the taller boy as she tried to find her companions.
"Oh..." Her hand came up to rest on his arm, the other one reaching out into the darkness for any of the others. She didn't much like the dark.
Split Couldn't hold it together anymore he let go of the twins before holding his head in his hands tightly the pain overcoming his senses "We are-we, we need to stop my head,Ev-Evalyn did-did you grab any medication p-please.....my head." Split felt the swelling in his head surge with every heart beat he hadn't overdone it yet, he wasn't bleeding out of hie ears yet or he hoped not. But he hadn't felt this bad in a long time. He looked at the twins "Are you two safe?"
Her vision was sharpening up, Evalyn noted, for she could see the pale figures of the twins and what seemed to be Split near the wall. Using Matt as a post of reference, she walked over to the distressed boy. He had done a good job of keeping Loc and Key safe, and for that she was more trusting of his character, as unstable as it was.
"I never knew you needed medication...and I'm pretty sure all of the supplies were left behind, unless someone else grabbed them." That was really too bad; she hoped someone had enough sense to grab the bookbag on their rush out. There wasn't enough time to go back for it, and that would be a stupid move, she was sure.
Stepping cautiously closer, Evalyn placed a hand on each of the twins, supporting upon their backs. "I'm sorry, Split, but...I'm happy the three of you are alright." Adrenaline still rushed past her ears in a torrent, but her heart was beginning to slow its fervent pace, so she knew it wouldn't last long. She wished that she could just lock out the people from the institution from their world, and be able to tell everyone that they'd be safe forever.
To be safe, and able to continue living like a normal person...it would be a dream come true. Still, that dream seemed to want to stay a dream, and Evalyn was beginning to feel the urge to simply fall asleep and dream...
She rubbed her eyes with one hand before replacing it on Loc's head, sighing inaudibly. At least these two were alright for now, it seemed. Once Eric sealed the door and they got on their way, that should buy them some time.
Adam waited at the top of the sewer shaft until Split and the twins had made it past him into the tunnel before jumping down after them. He landed heavily in shallow water but the tunnel was at least tall enough that he could just about stand up. Adam peered into the darkness in front of him, waiting for his eyesight to adjust; apparently the soldier he’d sent down first had crawled out of the way of the rest of them and was now about halfway towards the junction in the tunnels up ahead. Adam sloshed over to him and dragged him back over to the rest of the growing group and set him down against the wall, just close enough to the shaft that he face was visible. Adam knelt down so that he was more or less level with his captive before speaking.
‘Now, I’m obligated by prisoner-captor tradition to give you a choice before I start torturing you for information; so, as always, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. The easy way involves you answering every question truthfully to the best of your knowledge, and the hard way involves you slowly being compressed until I can fit what’s left of you in the palm of my hand. Personally I’d prefer it you picked the former, I would much rather not resort to violence’
‘Somehow I doubt that’
‘You’re right; I’d just much rather avoid the mess you would make. Blood stains are notoriously hard to get out. I suppose we could just avoid this ordeal entirely and have the twins over there read you past’. At this point Adam stood up and looked around trying to locate the twins; he spotted them standing near to split further down the tunnel.
‘Loc, would you mind doing me a favour and reading this guys past for me; I think it would be useful to see what sort of orders these soldiers have been given regarding our capture’
"That's the one thing that sucks about being flame retardent, nothing cauterizes." he muttered to himself, squinting at his bloody fingers in the dark tunnel. He looked up when Adam brought the soldier forward.
Key nodded for both of them at Split's question, holding onto Evalyn. Loc rubbed his arm, a little paler than usual, and went over to the "prisoner" and Adam. "I can do that," he said.
He lifted his hand to the prisoner's face, locking eyes together, wincing as he raised his other hand to the soldier's face. Loc stared at him for a moment before letting his arms drop.
"The soldiers had only two jobs, capturing as many escapees alive. If the public was in danger or took notice, the orders would have changed to kill first and retrieve the corpses." Loc looked up at Adam, his voice breaking up. "In either situation, the soldiers were ordered to capture the two pale children, 'Loc and Key', alive and unharmed." Tears started pouring down his eyes as he realized something. He sniffed and hicupped as he cried, walking back to Evalyn. The shock of the sudden attack just... hit him hard.
Sucking lightly on her split bottom lip, Evalyn gave a quiet hum of agreement to Matt, stroking Key's hair as the smaller girl held on for what she imagined was comfort. It was also comforting to Evalyn herself, being able to give the feeling out.
Her heavy gaze followed Loc as he left her side to read the soldier, feeling her heart drop into her stomach at his report. It was obvious why they wanted the twins back, but it was just so gruesome, what these men were ordered to do, what they were willing to do. If she thought herself small and weak, then what position were the twins in? A dangerous one, she supposed. However, she wouldn't let the Institution have them...she would rather be a corpse then let that happen.
Tongue nursing the wound, Evalyn wound an arm around Loc as he returned, crouching down unabashedly to keep the two of them close. She rested her cheek against Loc's hair, murmuring softly so that only they could hear. "I won't let them get you, I promise. None of us will let them."
Split seemed to be protective of them as well, and much more capable of saving them should something happen. Everyone with her now, all of them were good people. She pulled together her resolve, taking a deep breath and trying to blink away how crappy her body and mind were feeling.
"Once we've finally escaped for good, they'll never find us." Her words were hard to say, surprisingly, but she felt that she had to. In fact, Evalyn was discovering a lot of new urges and feelings that wouldn't let go of her lately, developing at a shocking pace in such a small amount of time. She looked to Matt's form wordlessly before squeezing the twins tighter.
"Maybe we'll even...maybe we'll even get rid of the Institutions."
"We agree," Split spoke over his discomfort "we won't let them have their way." Split staggered to his feet, his only comfort at the moments was that the pain he was feeling kept him in control of his predator, "we hate killing but our Mr. Hyde will do that for us." Still Split preyed for something to ease the throbbing, the institute had always drugged him up after the severe testing maybe it was time to try to muscle through it Hyde was laughing in the back of his mind, he couldn't let that savage have all the strength.
Key felt something odd against her arm, where Loc's arm brushed against hers. She looked and saw a crimson streak, and she cried out, "Loc! You're bleeding!" Loc looked down at the wound he received earlier, when the bullet "nicked" him. It had actually taken a chunk of skin and muscle tissue off of him, making a large wound that oozed blood in a steady flow. Loc's eyes widened and he whimpered a little moan before his eyes rolled back in his head, and his body went limp, leaning against Evalyn.
Evalyn's eyes widened in shock as Loc went limp against her, and she released Key to get a better look at him without letting him flop into the muck. As Key had stated, he was bleeding; she figured he must have been incredibly squeamish to faint so suddenly. Taking into account where they were and the status of Loc's arm, she frowned, not wanting the sludge around their feet to infect it.
Her arms wound around him tighter as she looked at the state of her clothes. They were still smeared with soot from the Institution's ruins, spattered with the blood of the soldiers she had shot, and flecked in the sewer water that had accepted her messy landing. In other words, they probably wouldn't make good work of his wound. The blonde pondered what to do, looking him over before carefully picking him up.
He was heavier then she expected, but still far lighter than she, so Evalyn didn't make any complaints. She worked his arms over her shoulders and placed her arms under his rear, letting him lean his head upon her shoulder as she took the burden. While she doubted she could carry him for long, she shouldered the task nonetheless, wanting to help for as long as she could. Besides, it gave her no opportunity to fall asleep, which is what she had been beginning to fear.
Key frowned at how easily he fainted. "At least he didn't throw up this time," she said in a strangely calm voice. She took off her shirt, flipped it inside out so that the mucky wet part was on the inside, stood on her tip toes, and pressed it to his wound, handing the shirt over to Evalyn in the same motion.
"It isn't that dirty," she mumbled, totally unabashed by her shirtless-ness. She hadn't reached puberty yet.
"Thank you, Key." Evalyn had to shift Loc in her arms to accept the shirt, but still didn't have enough hands to tie it over the wound.
Up top, the soldiers had been given their orders. Something was going on, and the children could not be allowed to escape. The button was pressed, and the building tumbled and quaked, coming down with a violent roar of pain. Its dying echoes funneled down into the sewer, making the walls tremble as loose gunk began to fall from the ceiling.
Evalyn frowned, looking up in silence before beginning to walk forward into the darkness. She was scared down to the very core, realizing that they could have been up there when the building came down. Now the blonde was determined to get as far away from the blast as possible. "Key, do you know where we'll end up?"
Her call, surprisingly meek after her show of boldness in getting them out, came back at them with the sloshing of water. Being tired, feeling frightened, and in the dark with stress weighing on her shoulders... Evalyn stopped her advance, lip stinging as she released it from between her teeth.
"You and Matt should probably be farther than me, huh? I can't see, nor do I know where I'm going..." It was kind of funny, being afraid of the dark after just being attacked by men with guns. She supposed it really was trivial, when looked at like that. Having Loc, even though he was unconscious, did help, however.
"And we know what they're after now, too, those men..." Evalyn couldn't bring herself to ask if they should leave the soldier here, simply because imagining herself in his shoes was more than dismal to her fifteen year old mind. She sighed. What she needed now was a shower, some sleep, food, and then good news to top it off, but that was a bit too ideal.
Key walked up and tugged on Evalyn's shirt. "I can help lead." She removed her blindfold, and with her large pale eyes looked ahead. She "saw" where they had to go and where they would end up.
"I can lead us to the housing district. We can find a house whose owner hasn't and won't be in for a while now. There are a few other choices, but they will all be ambushed and investigated. Because the owner of this household is shown to still be staying there, they won't enter, especially if we're there."
"Sir!" a soldier saluted as Carver stepped from his car, puffing away at a cigarette.
"Of the squad that was sent into the building there were two survivors, many of them are assumed to have been killed in the explosion." Carver didn't even look at him.
"Have you found and identified the bodies?" Carver took one last drag off his smoke before discarding it.
"No, sir."
"Then 'they' are still out there, and who's your second in command?" The soldier called his second forward, a Stewart Jenkins, Carver looked him in the eye "You've been promoted Jenkins." With a twitch of his hand the commanders neck snapped. "Now get me the blueprints of this building."
Carver closed his eyes and broadcasted his thoughts reaching out to the children "Hello, children it's Uncle Carver, I know who each of you are and what you can do, I'll be on my way shortly take care until then." Matt followed closely behind Key so that the fire lit up the tunnel ahead. He didn't want to stay in this dark, damp place any longer than was necessary. As he was walking he stopped suddenly, thinking he heard something. A little like static at first, and then a voice. He listened hard, at least it was quiet in the tunnel.
"...Uncle Carver, I know who each of you are and what you can do, I'll be on my way shortly..."
"Crap," Matt muttered, shaking his head to clear it. The institute was after them alright, they'd already taken down a building and now one of the worst was after them too. Evalyn's step had turned into a small stumble as Carver's voice slid into her skull, but she managed to catch herself, holding onto Loc with a firm and fearful grip. His whimper did more to unease her, fear permeating his unconsciousness as it ran down her nerves like an icy chill, causing her skin to break out into goosebumps. She couldn't bring herself to comfort Key, because it felt as if the muck had lodged her feet to the ground, as well as her thoughts, but thankfully Matt took that duty upon himself.
In the Institution, she had heard what happened to those who resisted, to those who tried to escape. "Uncle Carver" happened. He was infamous throughout the facility, and Evalyn had been terrified by the tales she heard from other prisoners like herself. No one knew for sure, but to have such a terrifying reputation was enough to convince Evalyn of this man's misdeeds.
Noticing that Matt and Key were on the move once more, Evalyn forced her feet to move, feeling even slower and cold than before. She realized that her fear had put her into hiding instinctively, as if the man had physically been standing there while she struggled to flee his grasp. Hearing her breath come in broken gasps, she began to regain herself, loosening her grip to a tolerable one on Loc and hesitantly halting her power. A hand came up to stroke Loc's back while she swallowed her heart and the urge for tears, catching up with Key and Matt to shadow them silently.
She knew she had been aiming too high...
Adam had been silently contemplating whether or not to take their prisoner with them when the message sounded out in his head. He looked up the shaft towards the iced over trapdoor above him.
‘Carver huh? I suppose it was only a matter of time until they unleashed that sadistic madman on us; I just wasn’t expecting it to happen so soon. Then again I wasn’t expecting them to blow up a building like that either. They must really want the Twins back.’
He lowered his gaze towards the soldier still sitting against the wall. He had been considering bringing him with them, partly for additional information but mainly because leaving him down here in this condition seemed a little too cruel. The presence of Carver however changed things; they couldn’t afford any dead weight slowing them down at this stage.
‘Well, I guess this is where we part. I trust you can hold out for a while until your friends come find you, if indeed they are looking for you or even know that you are missing?’
Caver simply grinned as he continued to scan the documents, only glancing into Jenkins' eyes once "You mean what do we do since we blew up a building and are now the centre of attension...." Jenkins froze with a gulp "Simple really we're military say nothing they scream cover up, anyone that gets too close or asks too many questions, gets to spend sometime in our quarantine." Carver seemed to have found what he was looking for floding the map giving it back to Jenkins "To give our actins weight we infect these quarantined people with something fast, effective, nasty and unknown." Carver moved toward the burning building, rubble and debris lifting from his path as he went "Finally we film their deaths and leak it to the closest news station, then our false cover will have been blown and will give us more ability to deal with any 'outbreaks' no one will question something if they think it will save their lives." Jenkins blinked nervously, Carver now standing over a froken over manhole in the middle of a flaming building chuckling to himself "Eric."
Carver turned his attension back to Jenkins stepping out of the building casually "keep an eye on all of the manholes, within three blocks of here three man teams civilian gear for now."
Another soldier in the back overheard Carver's orders began muttering to another "Their just a bunch of kids we should go down there, there's no way they'd escape."
"Okay," Carver said enthusiastically "You two juist volunteered, head down their the manhole cover out on the road their will put you close to them, do me proud." The soldier taken aback by Carver's impressed look and they went about doing just that.
Adam was walking a little behind the rest of the group down the tunnel, facing backwards and keeping an eye out for any movement in case the soldiers found a way through the trapdoor.
He turned around as the group emerged from the small service tunnel into a much wider and taller main tunnel; this was where all of the smaller tunnels converged and the sewage joined into one stream which lay before them now. Across from them was a raised walkway that would allow them to walk through the tunnels without having to wade through the contents.
He was about to step out into the stream when above them he heard a loud scraping sound. Looking up he saw on the walkway a ladder which disappeared into another shaft like the one that they had recently descended and presumably lead to the street above. It was then he realised that the scraping sound was that of a manhole being pulled back, amplified down into the tunnel below.
He watched as two soldiers slowly came down the ladder into view and immediately froze upon turning around and seeing them there. They recovered quickly and raised there rifles in front of them threateningly, Adam making the same motion at the same time.
‘Drop the gun kid, it’s not a toy’
‘Did Carver only send the two of you? I knew he was crazy I didn’t know he was stupid as well’ Adam’s eyes flicked over the area around the soldiers, searching for anything that would help him; he saw above one of them a patch of brickwork in the tunnels ceiling that was slightly loose.
‘You’re just kids, we can handle you’
‘No… you can’t’
Raising one hand Adam focused on increasing the gravity on the piece of loose ceiling above the soldier and after a second the heavy brickwork crashed down on top of him. The other soldier glanced at the still body before turning back and, jumping down into the sewage, faced Adam at eye level and pointed the gun at him again, this time with the intent to kill.
Adam waved his hand at the man and he collapsed under the surface of the stream under the strain of the gravity upon him. The soldier struggled to break the surface for air for a few moment before Adam raised his rifle and raked the surface with bullets; he then aimed again at the man still lying on the walkway and did the same, just in case.
Adam stepped forward into the sewage and calmly walked over to the walkway and lifted himself onto it before turning back to the others still standing in the entrance to the smaller tunnel.
‘It would be wise to move on quickly, before they block off the rest of the tunnels. We should leave now before more soldiers arrive’
"Agreed." Eric added, throwing his support behind Adam.
He hauled himself up after Adam, ready to help the others if one of them slipped or needed a hand.
Impressed with how Adam handled the situation, but still frightened to see that they were already being pursued, Evalyn readjusted Loc in her arms before approaching the walkway. She could already see the possible problem with this; after all, she was short and had someone even shorter in her arms.
Eric was lagging behind Adam, though, and seemed intent on giving the rest of them a hand, thankfully. Evalyn was going to need it, as would Key, most likely. "At least it'll be dry...um, Eric, can you take Loc?"
While the thought of not carrying him around herself bothered her somehow, she knew she couldn't hold onto him and get up there at the same time. She was already a huge hindrance physically with her small stature and low stamina.
Key was very worried at this point. She kept on looking around herself as though lost. "I... I need Loc... I can see further with Loc..." she mumbled to herself, leading them what seemed to be blindly. "Left here, right in a few meters, we'll go under another manhole, but if we run we'll be through before anyone gets there. Then another right, and we need to hurry!" she said, a little more than frightened, but trying to control herself. She was their eye at the moment.
Loc mumbled and groaned in his restless sleep. Key knew he might wake up soon.
The small girl, prompted by her prophesy, began to run ahead with her short legs, guided only by her second sight. Then she stopped and looked down the smaller dark side tunnel, waiting for the others to catch up before starting down again.
Eric nodded quickly, taking Loc gently into his arms and tucking the unconscious boy into a comfortable position against his chest. The kid weighed practically nothing, it seemed like.
Evalyn really looked like she needed the help. Eric was glad to give it, and as a bonus they would start moving faster.
Evalyn pulled herself up after Eric took Loc from her, looking up at the older teen with thanks as he cradled her previous charge with little to no effort. Yes, he made it look rather easy, and Evalyn wished she had the same sort of power, to carry unconscious children easily.
Key was leading them in a fervor, and it took all Evalyn had to keep up while still keeping a conscious eye on the others. She was beginning to feel rather cold in such a desolate setting.
(Hey, what did I say? When you pick up a kid, they become an accessory. Besides, Loc is gonna be unconscious unless you drop him.)
Key tripped, slipping in the dirty water and landing on her face.
Matt, who'd let go of Key's hand when she started running, caught up to her quickly. He lifted her and set her back on her feet, looking back to see how the rest of the group was doing. Everyone was tired and worn down by now, he had to admit even he was feeling the strain. He had a slight limp from the bullet wound above his hip, but he tried not to think about it. As long as they followed Key, hopefully they'd be there soon.
Eric stepped up his pace, moving up to join Matt and Key. He smiled uneasily as he adjusted Loc again, trying to shift the young one to a more manageable position over his shoulders, piggy-back style. He had to hunch forward a little, but if they needed to get anywhere quick, at least Loc wouldn't be shaken like a leaf in a hurricane.
Key muttered, "Sorry..." Instead of running, she started to walk carefully, but a little fast. They turned where she knew there was a man hole up ahead and she put a finger to her lips. "Manhole, be careful..." she whispered to Matt while they passed underneath.
(OOC:Splits still hurtin so he'll be kinda useless until he gets a little rest so I'll follow quietly until I switch him to predator)
Split watched in horror as the two soldiers were sacrificed to them, Carver couldn't possibly have thought that would work they had the advantage down here so few angles to attack from, and only two men it was weird. Split's other half was all a chatter about it wondering if the old man lost his edge. "We think something's wrong something isn't right...please be careful." He was getting better but not much at least he wasn't bleeding from the ears this time.
Evalyn kept close to the others, occasionally slowing down or speeding up to monitor the others with shy concern. She was pretty useless down here in the sewers, she knew, so the shaky blonde placed her faith in Key. It didn't seem as if anyone else was coming after them yet, unless they just hadn't met; it was possible that others were in the sewer further ahead, looking.
Everyone seemed to wear the same tired air about them, although it looked like Loc would be coming to soon with his squirming earlier. Silently, Evalyn wondered how much longer it would take before they found the empty house Key had mentioned on the surface. Hopefully the owner had left behind enough for them to go off of, in food and clothes. She wasn't going to lie; being clean sounded wonderful, but she'd rather be safe.
‘Split’s right, Carver’s too smart and knows us all too well to have just sent those soldiers with the mere intent of killing us; he must have had some other reason for sending them, though with someone as sadistically creative as Carver it could have been anything. Maybe to force us along the tunnels, with more soldiers ahead to direct us into a trap, though with the twins here that wouldn’t be a problem and he’d know that, or to unnerve us, remind us that we’re still being chased, let us know he knows we’re down here. Or it could simply be that those two decided to be the heroes and come down here alone and we’re just paranoid, who knows. Nevertheless, his soldiers are unequipped to deal with and remain overconfident, and even Carver himself would have difficulty in subduing all of us at once. As long as we stay together we should be able to elude recapture’
Despite his words Adam had been growing more concerned the more he thought about their current situation, they were potentially being pursued through the sewers, though they didn’t know either way and that’s what worried him, by a sadistic genius who new every detail of their abilities as well as having an ability of his own with a level of control and power that most of them couldn’t even match. Even so it wouldn’t help their predicament to scare the others.
Like many others at the Institute, Adam had feared Carver to begin with. He had dreaded the meetings with him that could better be described as mental torture, hated the training sessions that would always end in pain for him, and leave Carver without a scratch. Carver was the nightmare that made your life at the Institute hell, though his visits were sparse.
Then, somewhere down the line, possibly around the time he lost his ear, Adam started seeing Carver for what he really was rather than the nightmare he tried to instil himself as, not that this helped to alleviate his fear at all, what Carver really was, was a sadist; borderline psychotic and terrifying when he wanted to be, and utterly manipulative when he needed to be. He might as well have been a nightmare, but at least he could be hurt.
Carver had returned to the comfort of his car sitting in the back seat with a cigarret and a syringe. His cell phone rattling in his pocket.
"What is it White?" Oliver White CEO of the institute and the only person with enough courage to order Carver around.
"Why haven't you captured those children yet we can't have them loose in the street!!Are you trying to make me look bad! The board is getting impatient."
"White first of all, never call me and insult me when you're within three kilometers." White began to feel a slight pressure on his chest. "Now if I wanted to make you look bad I would've used a scalpel." Carver hung up, he hated being interupted.
He rolled up a sleeve and delivered a small dose of morphine directly into the blood stream. That nearly instant feel good feeling, taking it all in with a deep breath before exercising his powers a by again reaching out to the children.
"Having fun yet children? How many have you killed so far?" He laughed to himself "Feels good doesn't it Matt to burn and devour at will, but what kind of a monster will they see you as you're little more than a weapon born and bred to kill and destroy who can you really help, how long until you hurt the wrong people." Carver waited letting that Sinking in letting everyone hear, one of them was bound to give in allow him to link into their minds.
"Evalyn has anyone even noticed you, do they even know you exist, but I never sure if you prefer it like that, or if you really enjoyed all eyes on you. You never met me but I came up with the glass box, nowhere to hide, nothing to hide, remember I'll always notice you trying to fade away."
"Loc I remember showing you the things I've done, quite the show wasn't it, and Key you witnessed all of those fellow subjects suffer as I watched up until the blast did you see that too I wonder? That has got to make you think the future as variable as it seems what things are unavoidable....How about me?"
"Split, can even remember your real name or have you decended so far into that monster of yours that you can't remember what's real anymore, do you remember that little girl the 'mind controller' I brought her in to help you contain 'him' Im so sorry that failed.... Oh the screams! I remember them as if it were yesterday that monster is truely an artist in the realm of pain so sadistic watching the tapes I couldn't beleive how long he dragged it on for." Carver paused for a moment "Oh I'm sorry you two are one and the same then ask yourself how much comfort it is to know who's to blame for all those terrible things."
"Adam so well behaved, showered with praise hardly ever punished, I spent more time training you than any other, it's got to make the rest of you think how loyal is someone that rarely raised a finger to escape just think about it, trying to crush me doesn't work so well when I can do the same or worse to you, a very loyal pup just make sure you kids keep him happy he may just bite you to make his master happy." Funny how true it was, but turning them against eachother wherever possible was so much fun just as fun as tearing them down one by one until the whole group fell into chaos, besides they were bound together by their hatred for him which made this even more amusing.
"Eric so cold, so secretive, but nothing like a barbeque to warm that cool exterior, I'm sure you recall."
Carver needn't say more he had sit back and wait for his oppotunity his men wouldn't move an inche without his say so, if they were smart.
Eric's face tightened as a shudder went through his whole body. Damn that son of a bitch, damn him! The shadow of the burn wound on his back ached slightly, as if saying hello to an old acquaintance.
His whole body was tense, and suddenly he felt much older than his sixteen years. That place had been hell. Eric despised anything warmer than 98.6 degrees. Carver of course knew right away how to play with him, playing the role of the devil himself. Sometimes he wondered if he was merely playing, or if he truly was evil incarnate.
A scream rose in his throat upon the awakening of those suppressed memories, but he brutally shoved it down, composing himself. His features stiffened into a harsh mask of pure hatred and spite. The next breath he let out was a chill one, though the temperature in the air was uncomfortably warm. At least, around everyone but himself and Loc, where it was rapidly becoming cooler.
His lips sealed. He was cool, unshakeable. He had found that glacier in his mind, reveling in it's refreshing, comforting cold. Carver could easily worm his way inside again, but Eric never was bothered too much by that. He wasn't as sentimental as some of the others.
This time, Carver's words barely fazed Matt. He'd heard it all before, he was just a weapon, a monster, blah blah blah. Sure maybe he was dangerous, maybe a little crazy, but he wasn't a phsycopath like Carver. That guy deserved to get his ear cut off.
At the time, Matt had recently learned a tiny bit about Van Gogh, and when Carver happened by his cage talking about artists (whether he was one or someone else Matt couldn't recall) he decided to make him look like a famous artist. That was one of the few times he had used his second ability, combining it with the first to tear away the ear. He was promptly punished in a 'chemical accident' and given a fourth shackle.
The only monster here was Carver himself, and perhaps Split's otherside but that wasn't Split's fault. There was only one way Matt ever thought about himself.
Be the sun Matt
And so he was.
(HA. Pay up Sanctus, looks like I was right, Matt was the one who took the ear after all. She was betting that Split would do it)
Key was a little shaken up, remembering how she had seen Carver do his work. She and her brother, oh they never got his torture. They just had to watch, Loc knowing how much Carver enjoyed it, and Key feeling powerless as she knew the fate of everyone who died by Carver's hand was... inescapable.
"Just a bit further. The soldiers are everywhere, it's harder to see a way through them..." she ran ahead, careful not to fall, and looked down a tunnel. "Okay, take the next left then a right, and then we'll be going under a house. The house is occupied by civilians, but a few of us can get up through the sewers and into the basement, loosing them. The rest of you would have to follow me carefully." she said, her plan a little odd. She meant to separate the group so that there was a chance to get away.
Even a small chance didn't lift her spirits. Because the only thing she saw in everyone's future was Carver.
Loc stirred in his sleep as the cold, an icy breath coming out in a shudder. His dreams were those of nightmares, watching villains kidnap children off of the street and out of homes, doing terrible experiments to them, watching them die. Inbetween the dreams, he saw memories of Eric...
Evalyn had never dealt with Carver before recently, and her body once again kicked into flight mode before she could soak in what he was saying. Once it hit her, though, her mind immediately went back.
The glass box had been horrible, absolutely horrible. It was small in size, strategically placed where she could watch everyone walk by in the hallway, workers and prisoners alike. A camera was fitted in every corner, always watching, and the men over the speaker could see her even if she hid. The worst part had been that no matter how much she cried or screamed, no matter how hard she pounded against those glass walls, no one outside would notice her. No matter how hard she wished they could see, they did not, except for the men who watched her through the camera feed.
She had never so strongly wished to stop existing, and she would have forgotten herself if they didn't beat her back into mind.
Hands reaching to touch the ghost of bruises long healed seemed to be trying to pry away the mental pain. Was this man really undeterred by her hiding? Would he really be able to see her if they met?
Listening to him pick at everyone else, peeling back old scars to make fresh wounds, Evalyn didn't realize she had stopped moving. Tears welled up in her eyes, strained, as she reached up to place her hand upon the "S" adorning her neck. Almost too late, she realized she was walking the fence between coherence and nothingness, and immediately dropped her hiding as Matt and Key spoke. She couldn't die, not yet, not like this.
Wiping her eyes on the backs of her hands and realizing she had fallen behind, Evalyn started walking solemnly forward. Even though she knew it was probably what Carver wanted, she couldn't help but think...
What if she would be forgotten?
Carver’s latest assault was an interesting one, though not entirely unexpected. He’d always been the sort of person to break a person mentally rather than physically, though he was easily capable of both. He didn’t defeat you in combat, he convinced you you could never win and made you beat yourself before the fight even started.
Carver’s methods however, were underhanded even for him, playing off the insecurities of each person of the group one by one and broadcasting them to the entire group, Split and Matt’s fears of being ‘monsters’ and ‘weapons’, Evalyn’s fears and the tortures he’d inflicted on all of them, and while he’d been expecting the same treatment, Carver’s alternate approach to him was something that disturbed Adam; the fact that Carver had tried to turn the rest of the escapee’s against him, rather than try and intimidate him, was something that worried Adam.
Carver had a natural ability to play off the fears and insecurities of others and amplify them tenfold, and while the rest of them seemed too shaken by their own little messages to think too much about what was said, he couldn’t help but fear what would happen once this fear past and they began to question his loyalties.
Split couldn't take it, carver was tearing his mind apart, he was right he was a monster so why try? why try to resist it. He was no good to his friend like this, so why resist it why resist 'him'.
Split released his grip on the pacifist, he skin crawled as he let the monster out of its cage, chuckling through the old pain, his injuries healing in tune even his headache fading away. Split stood with a much more serious look than usual "We want want Carver dead, you help us kill him, and we might just behave." This version of the monster was less psychotic and sadistic its focus on Carver and its anger was overpowering his instincts, the pacifist in the back of his head amazed at this unwavering goal, but god help anyone that would stand in his way. As terrifying as it was to give up control the predator was giving him hope instead of dispair......
He would treasure this hope.
Matt cast a glance over his shoulder at Split, who had changed again. He wasn't attaacking anyone though, so Matt didn't think too much about it. He truly trusted his fellow excapees. Carver had a point about Adam, but Matt felt that for now he would just rely on his calmness instead of second guessing it. He stopped walking under a manhole at the end of Key's directions. Without hesitation he took hold of the metal ladder leading up to it, climbing up to just below the hole. He didn't hear anything, no voices or cars, but he was still wary. He dropped down from the ladder. "Evalyn, do you think you could try hiding another person with you? That way it would be harder for them to track us when we leave here." he asked her quietly.
Matt's voice had knocked Evalyn out of her thoughts, startling her to a point where she jumped. The things around her had gone unnoticed in her worries, foolishly, and she immediately began to take things in to make up for it.
"I've never tried," she admitted, "so I don't know if it'll work...but I'll give it my best shot for you." At least that part of her was still there, despite all prior madness and change. She was still striving for that something, no matter how bleak things seemed, and the subdued fluttering in her stomach helped soothe her worries.
She had been thinking over what Carver had said, about Adam, before being snapped from her trance. Evalyn felt horrible, like a traitor, but she couldn't help the uneasy edge that now lined her thoughts of the elder boy. The man's words seemed spot-on; Adam, despite all his power, had never fought to escape the Institution. What if...what if he was Carver's ally?
Her stomach fluttered more, this time with distress more than Matt's influence over her, and the small blonde stifled her treacherous thoughts. Still, that didn't change the fact that she had thought them...
Glancing over to Adam with guilt, she snapped her eyes away, fearful, and caught up with Matt. A large part of her wished for a single moment of peace, where she could close her eyes and rest against him like the pillar of strength he was. Where she could pretend that nothing was wrong, inside her or out. Evalyn shook off the thought.
"Who do you want me to try and hide?"
"Alright." Evalyn looked between her companions, careful to avoid meeting Adam's eyes in her own silent shame before coming to rest her gaze upon Key. The poor girl seemed stricken without her twin, small and blinded in her own terrifying manner. Evalyn could empathize with that.
"Um...I'll try with Key. You tell me if you notice her, okay?" Key was tiny, smaller than her, and if she would be able to hide anyone effectively it would be one of the twins. So, padding over to the young seer, Evalyn wrapped her arms around the girl, allowing her to return the gesture for comfort before letting that slowness wash through her. A beat passed, and she exhaled, seeing the world through her soft fog, watching Matt for any signs.
Key held onto Evalyn, her power dampening. The only thing she could see with clarity was Eva's S shaped tattoo.
She squirmed out of Eva's arms with a sudden start, not wanting to be totally forgotten. "Get up into the hole, Evalyn, it goes straight into a house. Take Loc with you, and be sure to hold onto him the whole time. He'll wake up while we're gone, but... he might not make much of a fuss if you keep holding him. Blinking slowly as she listened to Key's sudden start, Evalyn gave a short nod. Biting her lower lip gently, she approached Eric, wary of the cold airs around him.
"Excuse me," the lightweight murmured, relieving Eric of his charge as she positioned the boy carefully upon her back. Suddenly, she felt her nerves catch up on her. She would have to take care of Loc all on her own, and if anything happened Evalyn knew she wouldn't be able to live with herself.
Taking a hard look at Key, she offered the girl her very best smile, wanting to hide away the feelings that betrayed her resolve. It had to be a big sacrifice, splitting up with the person you cared for most, the single soul you shared a life with...Evalyn would do her very best to protect that life.
"I'll be seeing you later, safe, right?" Damp brown eyes searched Key's face thoroughly before lingering on Matt's, taking turns looking to everyone and ending with Adam's shoes. She didn't let the guilt bleed into her face for longer than the second it took to recognize it.
"And you'll see us safe." Mumbled as an afterthought, Evalyn readjusted Loc on her back before approaching the ladder, hauling herself up near the top before hiding. Pushing up on cool, slick metal, she allowed herself one final whisper.
"Take care of her, guys." With that, she took Loc up into the bowels of the house above, wishing and hoping for the best down to her last aching bone.
