View Full Version : Timing out?

How long do I have to be otherwise inactive on the site for my username to time out? It seems more and more that I will do a quick reply that takes less than two or three minutes to write, and when I hit the reply button, it tells me that I need to sign back in. I learned the hard way to just copy all my posts before I submit them (unless it's in the advanced reply, which somehow saves them?).

It's also happened when I switch to a different window for what seems like less than a few minutes, and then when I go to a non-public area (such as my control panel), I need to sign back in.

Someone once wrote on here that the limit is 10 minutes of inactivity...I can tell you it was definitely less than that in such circumstances. I do not spend 10 minutes typing out posts. I've noticed this has happened more since the site was rebuilt, too.

I don't have a permanent connection and as such, it would be counterproductive for me to be clicking the "Remember Me" button every time I signed in, but it looks like that's what I'll have to do. Anyone else had this problem?

It's currently set to 5 minutes.

Shaun has been having the same problem but it's been on my home computer, here at work I have noticed that I only log in once and I stay on without having to log back in

Would it cause issues to reset it to be a longer time-out?

There is a trick to not timing out. If you click on Quick Links in the menu bar at the top, and then click on Who's Online, you'll have the answer.

Who's Online automatically refreshes before the time out. Simply open the forum again in another tab on your browser. This works especially well when crafting responses without having to check every forum for new discussion.

think i may have to make a habit of writing some of what will be long replies or comments on my computer and then copy-paste them onto the board.

this is for stuff like book reviews and such.

i already have gotten into the habit when i find i spend too much time thinking about my comments as i write that i go and check at the top of the board to see i timed out and then i do a copy-save, re-log in and then go back to where i was and paste in my reply.

but, murphy's law holding true, i do not always remember to do that.

Ok, I increased it to 10 minutes. Let's see if that helps.
