"Monster Hunter"...

Who wouldn't want to track down monsters and kill them so that you can upgrade your own armor and weaponry that would help you take down even bigger and badder monsters? I know I would!

I'm sure that some of you are probably not too familiar with the franchise as it never really got the attention that it deserved here in America, but in Japan...it's been spreading like wild fire, for years.

As of yesterday (I believe...) Monster Hunter 3 (MH:Tri in Japanese I think) was released onto the Japanese market and it's already sold over a million units. In fact, the franchise is SO popular over there that the million units that sold already, was ALREADY sold and spoken for BEFORE the game actually hit the shelves.

"Why do the Japanese always get the wicked awesome video games?" is probably a sentence that is coming to mind right about now, and believe me, I'm right there with you. However, fear not! It seems that Capcom is every intention of releasing this title out in North America as well as Europe so that we'll be able to enjoy the hack and slash goodness too! In fact, there is even talk about online play that we can play with friends along with paying for 30,60, or 90 days of service as a subscription...

I'm sure that you want to see some footage of it, right? Well, here you go!

As you can probably tell from the graphics (even though they are still quite impressive) is that this game will be on the Nintendo Wii. So, if you don't already have one, I suggest saving up for the system. Yes. Do it.

Now, when it does come out in America I'm sure that it will come out in various forms, meaning that you're going to have some options when you walk up to the video game section of your local Wii retailer...

So far, in Japan, there have been a few versions that have been announced:

- The game by itself.
- The game along with a "Classic Controller Pro".
- The game with the "Classic Controller Pro" AND a BLACK Nintendo Wii.
- The game in it's "Collectors Edition" for that comes with a bunch of collectable items.

Want some pictures? Yeah you do...

So, is anyone else out there wanting to give this game a try? I know that I'm going to be purchasing the game with the "classic controller pro" when it releases State side.

Is it true that this game mostly caters to OCD nerdshoes and that boss fights often take upwards of an hour each of basically mindless fights for minuscule rewards? I was thinking of picking up MHF2U but everyone I know who are into these games have like 300 hours clocked and dont actually seem to enjoy playing them as opposed to just having to finish something they started. I pretty much hate grind-based games but this one seems to get a lot of mixed reviews

I honestly have no clue because I've never played a MH game. However, a user by the name of Xavious surely has, and hopefully he'll chime in here sometime soon...

Here's another update!

http://www.examiner.com/x-15433-SF-Nintendo-Examiner~y2009m8d3-Monster-Hunter-3-Release-Date-Announced

According to this article, it's been announced that the third installment for a console based Monster Hunter game is going to be released in America early 2010.

While that might seem like a way off from now, it surely seems that 2010 is going to be the year of great video game releases.

I'll keep you all posted if anything else pops up!

This game could be the final push I need to purchase a Wii :p

I've played the original Monster Hunter and I thought it was an okay game. Yes, to get better armor, weapons, etc you do have to go through missions repeatedly or get really lucky in your first run through. I also admit that I've never managed to beat the game because it can be a time sink and some of the bosses are a real challenge if you don't know exactly what to do :p

However, I love the combat system for the game. You have a variety of weapons to choose from. Greatswords, dual swords, hammers, crossbows, etc. Greatswords (my weapon of choice) are controlled by the right analog stick. Depending upon how you move the right analog stick determines if you manage to make combo hits on whatever you're attempting to eviscerate.

As I've already mentioned, the game has an item creation feature for upgrading and creating weapons and armor and creating different items. This is where I spent much of my time in the game. However to progress through the game you need these better weapons and armor. Otherwise you will be pwned, you will be pwned hard and it will hurt. The sheer amount of other items you can make is staggering as well. Case and point you can make poisoned meat, a multitude of ammo for ranged weapons, nets, traps, bombs and flash bombs, potions to heal health and other effects, and so much more.

All in all, I find the game entertaining, if only for the fact that I'm killing stuff with a giant sword and there is blood spraying :p

I’ve played both of the Monster Hunter 2 games for the PSP. I liked them both, could never get too far in them simply because I don’t know anyone around here to play with, and some of those bosses you need to have multiple players; literally.

How can bosses be THAT hard? I'm not doubting it, because I've never played a Monster Hunter game, but...wow...I've never heard of bosses in games being so hard that you NEEDED more than people than just yourself.

Artificial difficulty by making shit take 2 hours to kill solo. some MMOs often require 70+ people to kill a single monster, but at least that usually only takes a few minutes.

I remember one of my friends was bragging about how he had some uber poison-lance weapon and was all ready to take on one of the endgame dragons and then he spent a solid 1.5 hours sitting in place fighting it and refused to get up to go to a movie with the rest of us because he was "almost done!". It was kind of pathetic. He never came close to dieing so it wasn't hard, it was just a massive fucking timesink.

Well, at least for the PSP it’s not so much that they’re that hard as to require multiple people; it’s just they’re not available to take on in single player. Then again you can take a long time trying to take out tough bosses by yourself, especially with all the shit that some of them can pull.

Oh I am so looking forward to that! I'll just have to get myself a Wii now, won't I?

And yeah Shane, monsters can be HARD. Me and Lore were playing a game that took us days to beat a boss. I think it was Gaiaonline.com's zOMG! game, in Zen Gardens. The boss was Katsumi's Doll. The problem was the more people you added the harder it got. DX So we died no matter what till I bought a ton of buff items. Never under estimate buffs.

Haha, I hear you Kei.

But, yes, as a Wii owner, I cannot recommend the system enough. Not only will you be able to enjoy Monster Hunter Tri when it reaches American shores, but you'll also have Zelda, Mario, Super Smash Brothers, etc. etc. along with the likes of Wii Sports, Wii Resort, and Wii Fit. It's an all around entertaining console to have.

If you have any questions about the system or anything about it, let me know and I'll answer to the very best of my abilities. =)
