Why are our signatures so basic, why can't we upload images or use HTML code?

Right now regular members (not mods or admins) can't use images in signatures. We may allow this at some point, but we're wary of sig-abuse.

I'm fine with that really. If you have an important link, it can go under your "Homepage" link in your profile. I've frequented forums in the past where users can write a paragraph or two and when all is said and done, the signature is STILL longer than the post, especially with images. It just looks cluttered and stupid, and a size-limit in sigs isn't as easy to do as avatar/profile pics.

There will be no HTML, ever. Make do with BB Code.

I'm kinda glad that we can't have pics in our sigs... So many of the computers I use lag horribly when people have rotating HTML sigs...

Yeah, as you can see from Chriz's reply this won't be happening. I understand his reasoning.
Two main reasons is that somebody would definitely go overboard with supastyling their posts. This just causes eyestrain and headache, especially for mods who need to review posts as part of their job.
More importantly, it's a huge security risk. bbCode and similar is safe to use. HTML isn't and while you can make it difficult you cannot prevent the possibility of somebody using it to hack the site. HTML is a language that directly affects browsers and page content. You can also link other more capable languages through it, like JavaScript. Basically, it's a major security risk which is the whole point of forum-formatting code (bbCode, vbCode, etc).

Ok, maybe some of the credit goes to you, but just a little bit. :p
We may eventually allow members with a certain number of posts to have images in their sigs, but we haven't ironed that out yet.
Maybe that will be a good enough substitute for HTML?

Hey, why have our sigs been limited to five lines? I tried to put my old sig in and it told me it was too long. What happened to the 500 character limit?

It's fine where it's at. Too many folks were taking too much liberty with the bigger sig. It was at the point your sigs were longer that your posts and that was just confusing for a drun.. uh person like me.
Anyway, with that consider that you guys get to now use color and possibly, eventually have images in your sigs, along with all the new fancy gizamajigs on the profiles. It's really no loss.
