From the Files of Department 118. This is a little less than 17k words. I'm looking for things that can be removed. Please help. I'll start with a couple of segments.

Chapter 1

The familiarity of her desk, lightly sprinkled with personal paraphernalia, gave little of its usual comfort as she watched the two agents enter the building. Kate knew this day would come. She was aware of the stipulation: three or more reports of the same subject matter, within a six month period, required a mandatory investigation by an appropriate department of the American Empire.

Kate hoped it would be Department 41, who dealt with wild animal reports, but it turned out to be Department 118. She already knew first hand how efficient and successful their investigations were, since they came to town regularly to investigate scoopers. After all, they were the ones who found her and ‘recommended’ she come to Loughlin to use the support groups, discuss her dreams, and generally rehabilitate. Now they would find her once again; they would discover her change in dreams, and the tracks in the dirt of her back yard. It was only a matter of time before they learned what she already knew, whether she could bring herself to admit it or not.

And so the obvious question loomed in her mind: what were their intentions? She had no idea how they would handle the discovery once they found her. Kate abhorred the thought of being gunned down – or worse, put in some zoo paddock with forest décor so they could study her or sliced open on some cold metal slab... The thought made her stomach clench.

She looked at the agents as they made their way to reception. They were again a man and a woman, but they were different agents than the previous ones. This man was young with brown hair, a straight nose and strong eyebrows. His composure hinted of innate shyness keeping him apart from his surroundings. The woman was short with straight raven-black hair and Native American features. She stood with confidence and had a military posture about her. She would be the one of whom Kate needed to be wary.

Suddenly she recalled something Ollie said to her once as a passing whim: ‘keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer.’ Kate wasn’t sure these agents were really her enemies, but the more she knew about their intentions the better.

With a scoot back from her desk, Kate stood and straightened the pony tail keeping her full head of chestnut hair out of her face. She looked at the paper mache dinosaurs on her desk which Ollie’s son Tristan made for her. Kate patted the triceratops on the head with her finger and asked it to wish her luck, and then made her way to Ollie’s office. As she drew closer she glanced through Ollie’s office window, and began to hear elevated tones of an abrasive discussion between Ollie and the woman agent.

I don't think that anything needs to be taken out, if anything, more needs to be added.

Continue the story, I wanna see where it goes.

Thanks for the feedback, Shining Wolf. I'll continue with a little bit more. I don't want to overdo it on the size of the segments, if you take my meaning...

“Three reports of the same subject in six months, Sheriff. You know the rules. That’s a mandatory investigation.”

“There’s only been two reports,” Ollie objected.

“You sent the missing second report to Dep:41, knowing full well Mr. Riley Banks claimed it was a werewolf, not a wild animal, and you’d already had one report of a werewolf sighting from Mr. Earl Tippowitz.”

It sounded like this woman had Ollie trapped in a corner. For some reason, Ollie sent one of the reports to the wrong department. Knowing Ollie like she did, Kate could definitely believe he’d make such a mistake intentionally if he felt he needed to, but she had no idea why he’d feel that need.

“Oh; Riley claimed it was a werewolf? Oops; must have missed that.”

“Knock it off, Sheriff; you knew what you did when you did it. That alone constitutes misdirection, and is punishable according to Imperial Law. As of right now this investigation is started and you are bound by Imperial Law to grant us your full cooperation. If I get the slightest inkling you’re misdirecting us or neglecting to supply us information, I’ll throw the whole Empire at you. Do I make myself clear?”

Kate rounded the corner and stopped just in the threshold of Ollie’s office door. She was behind the line of sight for the agents, and to the right of Ollie’s vision. Ollie wouldn’t take notice of her until she announced her presence. She watched Ollie as he stared at the woman, his hazel eyes burning with frustration and anger. The female agent was leaning over Ollie’s desk, her arms supporting her as she glared all manner of intimidation at him. Ollie could be as stubborn as a mule sometimes; he wouldn’t stop pushing back until she stopped pushing in the first place. But eventually her stare whittled away at his resolve, and with her threat hanging in the air Ollie’s stubbornness finally relented.

“Crystal,” Ollie said.

“Good. Now, we require an escort to accompany us as we interview Mr. Tippowitz and Mr. Banks.”

“Well, that’s a problem, because two of my deputies are out sick, and the rest are dealing with other crap since before you got here. You’ll have to wait.”

“Then you can take us,” the woman agent pushed.

“Sorry; I’m scheduled for a town council meeting today. No way to get out of it.”

“Didn’t I just tell you how important it was for you to cooperate with me?!”

“Rachel?” the male agent asked, standing to the right side of the woman.

“Not now, Chris.”

“Rachel, you mind if I say something?”

“Yes!” she blurted as she looked around at him. Upon looking at her partner her face softened, and she sighed annoyingly. “Fine, whatever.” She stood and surrendered the discussion to the male agent.

“Sheriff Taylor, I’m new here, so maybe I don’t know enough about the situations here in Loughlin. I’m told Dep:118 comes to your town frequently without any trouble caused, and yet now you’re set on avoiding this case. The only difference I know of is the subject matter of the investigation. Why are you so concerned about this case as compared to the others?”

Ollie leaned back in his chair and sighed, visibly calming down. “Alright; like you said, you’re new, maybe you haven’t figured it out yet. This town is second only to Roswell in UFO sightings on this continent, and we’re a magnet for alien abduction victims. They’ve got several support groups started and more make a pilgrimage here every year. You guys follow up on their numbers and progress regularly; I got no problem with that.”

“Then what is the problem?”

“The problem is you two and why you came. Because of this town’s little quirk, people here are very susceptible to paranoia and conspiracy theories. If you guys come prancing in here and start interrogating people about werewolf sightings, you’re going to start a riot.” Ollie flamboyantly waved his hand toward the front of the building. “And after all hell breaks loose you’ll just waltz right on out, and we’ll have to clean up the mess. Quite frankly, we don’t need the hassle.”

“I think I see your point, Sheriff. But if we don’t get to the bottom of this now, and there really is some werewolf or other creature out there, you’re bound to have more sightings. If it attacks someone, you won’t be able to stop the riot from happening no matter how hard you try. Wouldn’t it be better to investigate the issue now, discreetly, and maybe resolve it before it goes too far?”

Kate was intrigued by the male agent’s understanding nature. He seemed to consider Ollie’s concerns seriously, and agreed with them. Of course, it could all be a ‘good cop bad cop’ performance; it certainly felt that way.

Ollie stared at the male agent for a few seconds. A smile almost manifested itself, but not quite. He then pointed at the male agent. “Okay, you I like. But it still doesn’t change the fact that I don’t have anyone to send out with you.”

“I can take them,” Kate blurted out before she even realized it.

All eyes turned to her, but it was only Ollie’s hazel eyes upon which she focused.

“Kate, you’re not a deputy.”

“Well, n-no, but it’s just taking them over to visit Earl and Riley, right? I know where they both live.”

“Kate, I can’t use you in the field in an official capacity. You’re not qualified.”

“If I may, Sheriff,” the male agent interjected. “If Kate stays in the car and only Miss Blackwood and I go to their doors, we’d merely be using her as a guide. Would that still qualify as an official capacity?”

Ollie took a deep breath and blew it out his mouth slowly, staring at his desk for a moment. He clamped his forehead with his right hand, the bangs of his salt-and-pepper hair falling over it. He rubbed his eyes with his thumb and forefinger, and finally looked up at the male agent.

“I suppose I could make that work,” he said, and then looked up at Kate. “Are you sure about this?” he asked.

Kate paused for a second or two, and then shrugged; it wasn’t like she could get out of it now. “Yeah; I’m sure.”

“All right,” Ollie surrendered. “Just be careful, and make sure you stay away from Riley, you hear me?”

“I’ll be okay.”

Ollie raised his eyebrows and gestured to Kate. “Alright, well, there’s your guide. Kate Crenshaw, meet Rachel Blackwood and Christopher Hansen from Dep:118.”

Kate greeted them respectfully as she shook each of their hands.

“You ready to go now?” asked Rachel.

“I guess so,” Kate answered with a nod.

“Good. Thanks for your time, Sheriff.” Rachel walked out of the office without awaiting a reply.

Christopher stayed behind and shook Ollie’s hand, thanking him once again. He offered to follow Kate out of the office. He seemed to be a gentleman.

“By the way,” he said as he followed Kate, “It’s nice to meet you, Miss Crenshaw, and you can call me Chris.”

“Thanks; nice to meet you too, and call me Kate.”

As they left the building, Kate found herself hoping she wouldn’t regret entering a first name basis with this agent from Dep:118.
