Werewolf.com provides users the opportunity to participate in a live chat room with other members. The chat room is hosted on an mIRC server. Participating in chat allows for you to become a more active member of the community as well as become better acquainted with your fellow WW.Commers.

The chat room is a friendly area for members to converse about anything. Games such as trivia are also provided at the discretion of each member.

mIRC is a free chat client that can be downloaded by anyone using Windows 95 through Vista. You can download the program here: http://www.mirc.com/get.html

Mac users may also use chat, but they must download a compatible equivalent. The following link contains a list of popular IRC clients for Mac: http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/mac/
Other unlisted programs for Mac users include Adium and Ircle. I hate Macs though, so perhaps a Mac user who reads this thread can be of better assistance.

After downloading IRC, you may join the room by manually entering the server information or clicking the IRC button in the navigation bar of the site.

The chatroom is moderated by staff members of the site. There are no set behavioral guidelines for participating in chat, however inappropriate conduct will not be tolerated and may result in a ban from chatroom access.

I have provided a basic troubleshooting guide to IRC for Windows users within this thread. Please post questions, comments, and concerns regarding the chatroom here and it will be addressed.

So I downloaded mIRC for Windows- what now?

You have two options. You may enter in the information manually, or just
click the IRC button on the navigation bar of the site. This guide is to primarily help those of you that want to figure out how to use the client.

Option 1:

I want to use the IRC button on the site. How?

If you click the IRC button on the site, mIRC will load up. Click "Continue." A window titled "Link Request" may appear. Ignore it and click "OK". Because of an error right now, you will automatically join ##werewolf.com. Click the red X for this room. Now, type in "/join #werewolf.com"

Option 2:

I want to manually configure IRC. What do I do?

Step 1:
Load up the client. If you can't figure this part out on your own nobody wants to talk to you anyway. Press the "continue" button once it has loaded.

Pay no attention to where it talks about your "evaluation copy". After 30 days, you may still access chat by waiting approximately 30 seconds after the message comes up. You will then be allowed to press the continue button again.

Okay, now what?

Step 2:
A window titled "mIRC options" should have automatically loaded. If not, click "Tools" and then "Options"

Type in the information where it asks for your full name and email address. This does NOT have to be the correct information. I encourage you to type in a false name and false email for the sake of extra privacy.

Now, type in your ww.com name where it says "nickname" and an alternative just in case the name is in use elsewhere on the server.

Sweet.

Step 3:
Look at the left hand side of the mIRC options window. Click "Servers". Once you are there, click the "Add" button. In the "Add Server" window that has now come up, fill in the information. You may type anything you want in the "Description" category. In the IRC server category, type "irc.ircstorm.net". In the ports category, type "6667". You may leave "Groups" and "Passwords" blank. Click "Add" when you are finished.

Find the server description that you just entered in the scrolling menu. Once you have found it, click it and press the "Select" button on the right hand side. Now click "OK".

Done. Now how do I get into chat?

Step 4:
Go to "File" and then "Connect". You may also click the icon of a lightning bolt in the top left corner of the client.

Type "#werewolf.com" into the bar where it asks for the channel name. Now click the "Join" button.

If anyone is interested, you don't necessarily have to hang around the main room when you enter into chat.

You can always set up your own rooms. That is the great thing about irc however there is no guarantee the room will stay around but it's still nice if say a group of you are planning a game or contest or just want to have a special chat.

You just hop on into chat. type your chatroom name with a # in front of it. So if it was a group of people I know wanting to chat we would type in something like #butttouchersanon. If you type this in main chat without explanation people will get confused, of course. :P

However, I'd recommend pm'n the folks you want to whisk away into your own chatrooms.

Instead of getting the IRC client, there are other options out there. I use Chatzilla (http://chatzilla.hacksrus.com/), which is an IRC add-on to Firefox. You download it and it will automatically show up under the Tools menu the next time you restart your browser.

However, the IRCStorm server is not a default one. You have to add it by typing /attach irc.ircstorm.net and after a second or two, you will be connected. Once everything is done processing, you can click on the tab (where it is clearly labeled irc.ircstorm.net) and select the option "Open this network at startup."

Joining with the chatroom is relatively self-explanatory. Once you are there, you can eliminate yet another step by right-clicking the tab to the chat room and selecting "Open this channel at startup."

Aaand that's it, and if you're adventurous on computers, you can play around with color settings and other fun Chatzilla stuff.

I'm also aware that Pidgin can do IRC as well, but someone else will have to write that tutorial.

In most chat programs there is a handy dandy feature that allows you to ignore shit stirrers or prevent yourself from being a shit stirrer if things people are saying are prompting the RAGE.

Generally you should be able to access this feature by right clicking someone's name and opening a mini menu that will offer you some options. Don't bother trying to kick or ban those will do nothing. Ignore is just your best option.

We usually see the same several members in chat every day. I think we are running out of ideas on how to encourage you all to participate there, I know I am.

If you haven't been to chat before, I seriously suggest you check it out. It is one of the best ways to become established here and get to know your fellow members.

Let me or the moderators/admins know what we can do to better encourage you into trying out the chat room. The discussions are usually light and fun and it is worth checking out, whether you are a new or old member.

You could run a chatzilla plugin though firefox (if it works on it) I think. you download the plugin then click the IRC button.

I'm not a linux user but I do know that there are some people on the site that do use linux and can get into the chat. Besides firefox's chatzilla, I'm sure if you google Linux IRC programs you will be able to find one that you can use to get into the chat.

I use the GNOME version of Ubuntu, and might switch over to the KDE version if I ever feel like it. Firefox is compatible with most Linux programs out there anyway, and Chatzilla is an easy add-on. IRC itself, someone else will have to vouch for.

Is there way to log onto the chatroom without downloading anything? I don't enjoy downloading programms I only ever use once, because lots of other forums have an explorer based chat room. So I find it sonfusing as to why I need to download it. That's all.

In answer to your other question though, it's as basic as IF you want to get into chat, THEN you need a program to do it. If you don't want to download (most if not all of these programs are free and reputable, by the way), then you can simply participate here without the chatroom environment. You're not the only one who'd be doing it.

And if you end up using the once and never coming back, then uninstall it. If you want to keep coming back, don't uninstall it and use it more than once.

Actually, I'd like to take a moment to say that browser-based chats do work and can work wondrously. Although I admit the Java chat room we had were wasn't exactly the paradigm of browser-based chat rooms. If I recall correctly, the other forum I regularly visit, AlchemyX, has its chat based on the X7 Chat (http://www.x7chat.com/) program, which is actually coded in PHP.

But this is a moot point though. Wolfward, if you want to get into ww.com chat you need an IRC program of some sort.

Or maybe the loss of me, (the cohesive glue, obviously) for a few months just caused everything to fall apart and chatters to drift their separate ways.

That, or everyone picked up and moved without me in a ditch attempt. I hate it when that happens.

just joined, still getting the hang of things. was a bit confused when i logged in and found myself all on my lonesome, so i can understand your ire concerning same. perhaps we should hold a meeting (although i won't be able to join in for a bit, i can still get to see the end result)to decide on the best times for all of us to be on together. i know we all live in different parts of the world but it would be nice to chat to fellow Lycans on live2live basis once in a while.

The IRC button opens an irc:// link (similar to an http:// link for normal web pages). If you've set up a default IRC program in your browser, it will launch that and take you to irc.ircstorm.net and bring you into the #werewolf.com chat room.

If you don't have a default IRC client set up, it'll do nothing.

It's now labeled in the menu bar under the header as "IRC."

You click it and it should activate whatever you use for IRC or mIRC.

I'm pretty much there lately. Since it's boring and we need good fodder for laughing at each other I'm totally encouraging people to be as ridiculous as possible. Even the old fashion "hot tub" parties of years long ago. :p
