The "chav" is /NOT/ the british thug. A thug, unless the term's meaning has very recently changed and not a single dictionary in the English language has been updated to include the new meaning; a thug is a ruffian or cutthroat. Typically a term applied to people who prefer using fists to a get a job done and have no regard for law.
A "chav" is a teenager, or young adult, who is most typically jobless and preferring brand-name attire, gold jewellery (men and women) such as gold necklaces or sovereign rings, trainers and baseball caps. In short: just about 80-90% of the population of US, UK and majority of Europe who are between the ages of 15 to about 25. You're going to tell me they're all thugs? Funny because most of the people I know are stereotypical (please note: "chav" is a recent term for a long existing (more than two decades at least) steretype that most people fit into one way or another) chavs and yet: obey the law and rarely raise their fist, and generally only doing so in local sports centres and the boxing/martial arts classes they offer. I have met many "chavs" and not a single one has ever even remotely acted like a thug at all.
So please forgive me for not being up to date with the English language. I must have missed the memo when the term "thug" had been radically changed from a ruffian to a common person who'd barely say boo to a goose.
Note: My reaction is quite frankly because I'm also classed a "chav". So you're basically calling me a thug.

I think what he's implying is that Chav is British for the American equivalent Thug.
