MILAN, Italy (Reuters) -- The Champions League quarterfinal between Inter Milan and city rivals AC Milan was abandoned after 73 minutes on Tuesday after Milan keeper Dida was struck by one of dozens of flares thrown down from the stands.
German referee Markus Merk took the players off the pitch at the San Siro stadium after Inter fans began hurling plastic bottles and then over 30 flares on to the penalty area below them after a header by Esteban Cambiasso was disallowed.

Dida received medical treatment to his shoulder while Inter players urged their fans to stop hurling objects on to the pitch.

The goal frame disappeared in clouds of smoke as flares continued to be rained down and burn on the pitch.

The players came back on to the field after 25 minutes but Merk took them off again after just 30 seconds play and abandoned the game when more flares came raining down with no sign of intervention from the police.

Milan was leading 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Andriy Shevchenko, which had put it 3-0 up on aggregate after it won last week's first-leg 2-0 at the San Siro stadium the two clubs share.

UEFA's website reported that "referee Merk will now submit his report to the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body, who will deal with the case."

Hm. Sounds like something I would do with some friends. The cool thing is that the police didn't do anything.

Oh that is nothing...

You should have seen the riots that happened after the reigning Peaknuckle champion was defeated by a 10-year-old. It could only be described as bloody...

Seriously:

This only proves more reason that sports should be banned, and cool things like knitting should have more spotlight...

Okay really serious...

It is really a sad day when fans start REALLY trying to control the game, instead of letting the players battle things out. I know it is upsetting to lose or be loosing, but that is what makes sports fun. It is called healthy competition. After seeing the terrible tragety that followed the Red Soux victory in New York...was it the Red Soux who won... (damn it is still too early) at any rate, you had one team that hasn't one a game in years, and you had another team that has been winning year after year. It was nice that the other team won for once, but the fact that these big KIDS, couldn't accept that loss as men and women, and congradulate their victors, and instead went out pillaged the town, and even instances hurt and or killed other people, because the lost, is very unfortunate.

What these fools don't think about is, if they keep doing this kind of stuff, all games will have to have more security, and thus meaning less freedom to cheer or rant. In short, all they are doing is screwing themselves...
