I heard this on the news this morning, but it was something that I already new, from prior studies, but historians have found that the legendary Number of the Beast, 666, is in fact a misprint! The actual number is 616.

Sorry folks who have the 666 proudly labeled on their name, shirts, accessories and such... It is wrong... :D

Actually I'm more curious about the effect this should have on fundamentalist Christians who believe the bible is an absolute truth. The mear fact this one number has been translated incorrectly brings the the absoluteness of the entire book into question.

Are there other mistranslations? It has to be said that a number is much easier to translate then any portion of text and it's context.
Is there a page missing from the start that says to "My darling Candy." and "All characters and events portrayed are fictions and any similarities to people living or deceased is entirely coincidental."

Interesting, except I thought the number 666 was arrived at because in Hebrew Numerology, the number 7 is one of the most pure of numbers, thus 6 is a bastardisation. There's something about there being three of them as well, can't remember what though (my numerology isn't great).

Here we see the dangers of reading copies of copies. There's nothing to suggest that the copy they dug up in a garbage pit was correct either. Yet numerology does apparently bear out 666. So which is the right one? I suspect we'll find out when the beast arrives - shouldn't be too long now.

Only fools say that the Old King James Version is completely accurate. It is close, but most "real" preachers and such have to go to college and take courses in basic Hebrew, Latin, as well as Greek, to find the true meaning behind what is being said.

As far as the 666 and 616 go...

Yes, there are other mistranslations in the Bible. In the past, none of the mistranslations have really thrown people into question about the Bible, just that was mistranslated and that's that.

One mistranslation has to do with Moses. It was thought that the Bible said that he had horns ontop of his head, but later on it was discovered that the Bible was saying that they were beams of light shining around his head or something like that.

But no, it's not going to change anyone's perspective on the Bible, really.

I don't think I'd be all that surprised. According to a show I watched on one of the History channels (I think it was History International), there are books that have been witheld from the bible, so why not some mistranslations as well. That show said the reason they were witheld was something along the lines how it would "confuse" the faithful.

The early Roman Catholic church withheld these books, because it conflicted with their interpretation of things...

In truth, I would love to see what these other books say... :D New information is always exciting...
