Two years ago, West's NFL Football Statistics Thread was created. The thread was a great success, but I was too lazy to constantly keep up with all 32 teams. Last year, I made the same attempt. This time it failed completely and I dont think I got past week 4 or so.

This year, the Seahawks went to the Superbowl. This being their first superbowl ever. While it was a loss in the end (bad refs, cough) I felt like I should make a thread dedicated to the one team in the NFL that I really care if they win or lose, the Seattle Seahawks.

I know this website has alot of Seahawks fans, probably even more than any other team in football. This thread will contain Seahawks news, videos and everything else I can put together. I will try and make the off-season as fun as possible (as long as it is) while we prepare for the 2006 Seattle Seahawks season.

I think that if you do not know too much about the sport of professional American football, you can learn it here. Please ask me questions, leave comments, and help create discussion about the Seahawks here. If you have any Bawks to say, just know that the Hawks (not the Eagles) went to the Superbowl.

I plan on updating regularly. It depends how much news I can find during the off-season.

This thread will not be JUST the Seahawks, I will also contain interesting NFL news that I can find. I bet you it will relate to the Seahawks somehow, but there is always other exciting news out there.

Go Hawks

Note: This thread is incredibly Pro-Seahawks biased and Anti-Steelers. If you like Pittsburgh, get out of my thread.

Welcome to Seatown (http://www.mixtapemovies.co m/mixtapemovies/mp3/seahawks.mp3)

The Seattle Seahawks have alot of people in the Probowl this year, which will be played on Sunday, Febuary 12th.

For you who do not know football as well, the Seattle Seahawks are part of the NFC. The NFC and the AFC play against one another in the Probowl, just like in the Superbowl.

Matt Hasselbeck will be the starting Quarterback.

Shaun Alexander will be the starting Running Back.

Mack Strong will be the starting Fullback.

Walter Jones for the Seahawks, along with the Ram's Orlando Pace will be the starting Tackles.

Seahawks Robbie Tobeck is a backup center. Olin Kreutz for the Chicago Bears is injured, and Tobeck will likely play alongside the New Orleans Saint's LeCharles Bentley.

Rookie Seahawk and leader in NFL Tackles Lofa Tatupu was to be a reserve inside linebacker, but Chicago's Brian Urlacher is injured. Tatupu will likely play.

Former Seahawk Koren Robinson, now Minnesota Viking will be playing Kick Return Specialist.

The NFC looks like it will just dominate the Probowl. Steve Smith and Santana Moss, the two top recievers in the NFL will be recieving with reserves Larry Fitzgerald and Torry Holt. Julias Peppers and Michael Strahan on defensive end.

AFC has some of their chumps starting. Peyton Manning for the Indianapolis Colts will be their starting Quarterback. Edgerrin James for the Colts will be the Running Back. The AFC has a sweet starting recieving team though with Marvin Harrison from the Colts and Chad Johnson from the Bengals. They've got Marcus Stroud from the Jaguars as an interior lineman and Troy Polamalu from the Steelers on Free Safety. That's cool. Only real thing I am worried about is the AFC also has Cornerback Champ Bailey from the Denver Broncos. Bailey is one of my all-time favorite defensive players, maybe even players who does not play for the Seahawks. Regardless, the last thing I want to see in my life is Hasselbeck put the ball into the hands of Champ Bailey.

Manning doesn't have to worry about much stress so I bet he'll play well. Especially with a reciever he knows like Marvin Harrison and another excellent reciever like Chad Johnson.

Regardless, I expect Hasselbeck to keep it away from Champ Bailey. He knows what that man can do, and it's a bad idea to throw the football anywhere on his side of the field. NFC should win this one easy.

HONOLULU (Feb. 8, 2006) -- Robbie Tobeck pondered the alternative to spending a week in sun-splashed paradise. He could have been home, staring at the walls and wondering how it all went so wrong for the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL. Instead, he is looking at palm trees and other breathtaking scenery. He smiles. He can even laugh on occasion.

Make no mistake. The Seahawks' talented center is still mighty depressed about his team's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. But at least, while preparing to play in the Pro Bowl, he has many more pleasant diversions to help ease the pain.

Robbie Tobeck and Matt Hasselbeck are ready to move on.
"If I was at home right now, I'd be sitting on my couch going, 'Ohhh ... we were so close,'" Tobeck said. "You might have been wallowing in it a little bit. It is nice to come here and be around some other guys and just have a good time."

That's been the case for all seven of the Seahawks players representing the NFC in the league's annual all-star game at Aloha Stadium.

They are soaking up the sun, as well as the carefree atmosphere that typically surrounds the event. Sure, there is another game to play, but the intensity doesn't compare to what they experienced in the two weeks they spent preparing for the Super Bowl or for any of their other postseason games or for any regular-season game for that matter.

"In all seriousness, this is a dream come true, just to be here," Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said. "I'm not going to complain or feel bad or sorry for myself or my teammates. I mean, the Seahawks, since I got there to where we are now, are totally different. We're going in the right direction, not the wrong direction. (Offensive tackle) Walter Jones used to have to come over here by himself every year. Now there are seven of us. It's cool."

The Pro Bowl is a time for the best players from different teams to get together and do more socializing than practicing, meeting, or worrying about their assignments on game day. Players from other NFC teams and the Carolina Panthers coaching staff, which is guiding the NFC all-stars against their AFC counterparts, have been extremely supportive of the Seahawks players here.

"That's been a nice thing," Tobeck said. "Guys that we competed hard with during the year and guys that we battled with in the playoffs have all come up and said, 'You guys had a great year, congratulations.' That's nice when your peers recognize what you've done. That's really the ultimate compliment.

"And the nice thing for me, being my first time, is having six of my teammates here just to kind of reflect with and unwind with a little bit."

Hasselbeck, Tobeck, Jones and their fellow Seattle Pro Bowlers -- running back Shaun Alexander, fullback Mack Strong, offensive guard Steve Hutchinson and linebacker Lofa Tatupu -- had anticipated a far different outcome in the Super Bowl. They never bought into the notion that the Steelers were the presumptive favorite because they entered the game as the hottest team in the league.

Strong and the Seahawks aren't looking to blame others for the loss.
These seven Seahawks fully expected to arrive here as league champions.

"I was convinced that we would come out here and it would be a real celebration, that it would be a culmination of our season," Strong said. "But I'm looking forward to being out here and really enjoying this time, soaking this all in just as I did the Super Bowl last week, and just get ready to move forward."

Several officiating calls that went against Seattle have drawn plenty of media coverage and commentary. Although the Seahawk Pro Bowlers might not be happy about ending up on the short end of several of the officials' judgments, they won't use it as an excuse for losing.

"Despite whatever happened in the game, we still didn't do some things we could have done to help ourselves out," Strong said. "We still could have won that game if we would have just made a couple of plays."

"Honestly, we're going to be OK, we're going to get over this game," Hasselbeck said. "Hey, we had an opportunity to play better and to be world champs. We didn’t play well enough to be world champs and we all know that. People will make excuses, saying, 'They got you on a trick play,' or, 'The officials called that and it looked like something else.' As players, we're not going to make that excuse. Our excuse is we didn’t play well enough, period."

Well Shaun Alexander's agent was contacted by Seattle earlier this week. Alexander will negotiate after the Probowl.

Alexander wants to stay in Seattle, but he wants a long-term contract.

I'm sure Seattle will re-sign him.

The NFC won the Probowl as I expected. Champ Bailey for the AFC seemed almost unstoppable, which is normal.

The first quarter Hasselbeck didn't play a very good game, with 1 interception and less than half of his passes completed. He did much better in the forth quarter. Shaun Alexander did not play due to his foot injury.

I think this victory really needs to go out to Michael Vick and Derrick Brooks.

Peyton Manning threw 3 interceptions, which hurt the AFC alot.

As for Alexander and his contract, I think the biggest problem is that he wants a long term contract, and considering his age, he probably wont be worth the money after the first couple of years. Regardless, Alexander is a key part of Seattle's offense and a fan-favorite, I don't see how they can afford to let him go.

How old is Alexander, and when do most professional football players retire?

West
02-12-2006, 10:45 PM
Alexander is 29, and he will be thirty here in a couple of months. Currently, he has 6 years of NFL experience.

Alot of really good players retire around 13 years of experience. Alexander will probably start to fall apart around age 35, and by "long term contract" he probably means 6-7+ years. And because he is the MVP, he is particularly valuable and those years will be very expensive.

Mind you, Seattle still would like to re-sign the rest of their players who's contracts are up. These players include WR Joe Jurevicius, DT Rocky Bernard, FS Marquand Manuel, G Steve Hutchinson, and 13 year Seahawker FB Mack Strong.

The Seahawk's pockets are going to be a little dry this off-season.

NEW YORK (March 2, 2006) -- A few hours after NFL owners voted to continue their standoff with the players union, the league extended its deadline for free agency by three days, putting off what threatened to become a mass purge of high-priced players from rosters.

League vice president Joe Browne announced the delay Thursday afternoon, seven hours before the midnight deadline.

The owners' vote after a 57-minute meeting earlier in the day had seemed to end 13 years of labor peace between the league and its union.

Commissioner Paul Tagliabue called the situation 'dire' after the owners' vote.
Browne did not elaborate on the deadline delay, which gives the union 72 more hours to negotiate a contract extension to the labor agreement that could add about $10 million to the current salary cap of $94.5 million. Many teams spent the day scrambling to get under that figure, and a number of big-name players were expected to be cut.

Free agency will now start at 12:01 a.m. EST Monday instead of Friday.

(only pasted important parts)

So, we'll see if Alexander and the other few Seahawks will be wearing the same jersey next season on Monday.

Seahawks have cut Cornerback Andre Dyson and Outside Linebacker Jamie Sharper.

Dyson, one of my favorite Seahawks was a five year veteran from Utah, and he started 7 games least season. This includes the game where he scored two awesome defensive touchdowns on Monday Night in Philadelphia. Dyson was out for 6 games due to a strained right hamstring, and then a sprained left ankle. Cornerback Kelly Herndon will now be in Dyson's place. You may remember Herndon from the huge, 79 yard interception return during the Superbowl.

Jamie Sharper, now 31 years old started the first 8 games in the Seahawks season this year, then getting a staph infection in his right knee. Sharper was out for the season. Rookie linebacker Leroy Hill will be taking Sharper's place, as he has been doing.

This has put the Seahawks 11 million dollars under the NFL Salary Cap, which means more money to negotiate with Shaun Alexander.

We'll see if he will still be a Seahawk tommorow.

The Free Agency has been held back by the NFL for 72 more hours.

Regardless, The Ghost, Shaun Alexander has been signed for eight years. Alexander's contract, 62 million dollars will be spread out for his eight more years with the Seahawks, also making him the most valuable running back ever.

With Alexander now leading the record for most touchdowns in an NFL football season, "I'm the only one in history who's done what I've done," he said.

We'll see who else Seattle re-signs eventually, and I will keep this thread updated.

Former Seahawks Wide Reciever Joe Jurevicius was signed to the Cleveland Browns now that his 1 year contracted with Seattle ended and he became a free agent. Apparantly, he grew up in the area and said it was always his dream to play for the Browns. His contract is for three years, and he lead the Seahawks in most touchdowns for a Wide Reciever that season.

Jurevicius, who has played in three superbowls (including the one with Seattle) will unfortunatly never see one again.

Nice going Joe.

Steve Hutchinson may go to the Minnesota Vikings, but the Seahawks placed a transition tag on him. He was the only player in the NFL this year with a transition tag.

This means that Seattle has one week to match or provide a great ammount than the Vikings offer.

I guarantee that Seattle will attempt to re-sign him, they did not place the tag on him for no reason, he's one of the top guards in the NFL and Seattle has the salary cap room for him.

Sweeet, Rocky Bernard was another Seahawk I liked alot.

Seahawks re-sign DT Bernard, WR Warrick

NFL.com wire reports

SEATTLE (March 15, 2006) -- Rocky Bernard, Seattle 's sought-after defensive tackle, re-signed with the NFC champions.

Bernard agreed to a three-year contract, according to an assistant for agent Gary Uberstine. Bernard had 10 1/2 sacks in the regular season and playoffs after 9 1/2 in his first three seasons combined.

Rocky Bernard was a big part of the Seahawks' success in 2005.
The Seahawks have now retained two of their three most important potential free agents. They have four days left to keep All-Pro left guard Steve Hutchinson.

Hutchinson, Seattle's transition player, signed a Minnesota Vikings offer sheet March 12. The Seahawks have to match the offer within seven days or lose a 6-foot-5, 313-pound reason Shaun Alexander rushed for 1,880 yards and scored a league record 28 touchdowns in 2005.

The Seahawks don't intend to lose Hutchinson. Seahawks president Tim Ruskell has said Alexander's signing was "the beginning of getting our free agents back in the fold."

"That is what we are going to do," Ruskell said upon signing the league rushing champion for eight years on March 6. "Maybe we won't get them all but we want to keep our core together."

The Seahawks also agreed to bring back punt returner and wide receiver Peter Warrick. Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

Warrick, signed last season after being cut by Cincinnati last season, became more important to the Seahawks after Joe Jurevicius, Seattle's team leader with 10 touchdown receptions last season, signed with Cleveland on March 11.

He was the fourth overall pick by the Bengals in 2000 but was troubled by injuries throughout his career.

To my knowledge, Terrell Owens has finally been cut from the Philadelphia Eagles. About time.

http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/1820/terrellowenscartoons port9tm.gif

Currently the Dallas Cowboys are looking into signing Terrell, but even with his skill nobody wants to deal with his loud mouth and agressive attitude.

Restricted Free Agent Josh Brown (Kicker, and another one of my favorite Hawks. Stop taking my favorites.) also has Dallas' attention, and i'm not talking about that awesome victory where we got a touchdown, an interception and a field goal in the last 2 minutes of the game we were surely going to lose.

Most tense, exciting victory ever.

Here's a little Seahawks free agency update

Seahawks have signed/resigned:

Josh Brown, (Kicker) (woot)
Tom Ashworth, (Tackle)
Kevin Bentley, (Linebacker)
Russel Davis, (Defensive Tackle)
Will Heller, (Tight End)
*Maurice Morris, (Running Back)
Julian Peterson, (Linebacker)
Mack Strong, (Running Back/Fullback)
Joe Tafoya, (Defensive End)
Peter Warrick, (Wide Reciever)
Jimmy Williams, (Cornerback)
*Nate Burleson, (Wide Reciever)

Rodney Bailey (Defensive End) signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ryan Hannam (Tight End) signed to the Dallas Cowboys. Marquand Manuel (Safety) signed to the Green Bay Packers. Joe Jurevicius (Wide Reciever) signed to the Cleveland Browns. Steve Hutchinson (Offensive Lineman) signed to the Minnesota Vikings after the Seahawks lost in arbitration.

We are still waiting to see if Seattle makes a move on backup Quarterback, Cornerback and Wide Reciever (and another favorite Hawk of mine) Seneca Wallace. Wayne Hunter (Offensive Lineman) and Tom Rouen's (Punter) contracts are still up in the air. Rouen has seen three superbowls and he's an excellent punter, I don't want to lose him. It would be nice to recieve all three of them back, but I believe Seneca Wallace is the most important. If Matt Hasselbeck gets injured, the last thing they need to do is bring in a Quarterback who is new to the team.

*It's good that we have Maurice Morris back as a second string Half Back to MVP Shaun Alexander. He's a good RB and can definatly help out if something happens to Alexander.

*Nate Burleson was born in Seattle and is now coming home. While the Vikings took one of the Seahawks top candidates with crazy contracts and loopholes, Seattle playing the same game grabbed their star Wide Reciever.

--------
The Seahawks 2006 pre-season and regular season opponents have been announced, and the game orders has finally been released to the public. Seattle will be making two Monday Night Football appearances. Seattle will be making one Thursday Night Appearance. All Monday Night Football games will be shown on ESPN, and you WILL be able to view this game. Seattle playing your local team will also be viewable. A Seattle game may be on if your local team is NFC and plays after or before the Seattle game, as long as another local team is not NFC. This is not guaranteed, as a random NFC game will be shown if you do not have two local NFC teams. I have starred the games that will be particularly fun to watch (in my opinion).

Shaun Alexander, the NFL MVP, will grace the cover of Madden NFL 07

April 20, 2006 – Electronic Arts announced today that NFL MVP and NFC Champion running back Shaun Alexander will appear on the cover of Madden NFL 07, the newest iteration of the EA SPORTS™ best-selling football franchise with the official videogame license of the NFL and its players. With this year’s focus on the running game, Alexander is the perfect representative for the cover of the most popular football videogame franchise. Last year Madden NFL 06 sold more than six million copies.
“To be on the cover of Madden NFL 07 is a big milestone in my career since I have always been a huge fan of this franchise,” said Alexander. “EA SPORTS is focusing on the running game in this year’s version, so I was honored when I was chosen to be on the cover to represent the improved running game.”

Alexander, who was named the NFL MVP and selected for his third consecutive Pro Bowl this past season, is the hottest running back in the NFL. He has rushed for over 1,150 yards in each of the last five seasons. As the most valuable player in the NFL he rushed for a league-high 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns on 370 carries. He also caught 15 passes for 78 yards and one touchdown, scoring an NFL-record 28 touchdowns, setting a new single-season rushing touchdown record. In addition, he extended his NFL-record number of seasons with at least 15 touchdowns to five. During the season Alexander became the Seahawks career leader in rushing yards (7,817) attempts (1,717) and 100-yard games (33).

Coming into its 17th year and with more than 51 million copies sold, Madden NFL Football continues to stand out as the most popular football videogame franchise of all time with a combination of innovative new features and the most authentic football gameplay. Developed in Orlando, FL by EA Tiburon Madden NFL 07 will be available in August on Xbox 360™ videogame and entertainment system, the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox® video game system from Microsoft, Nintendo GameCube™, Nintendo DS™, PC, PSP™ (PlayStation®Portabl e) handheld entertainment system and Game Boy® Advance.

Day 1 in the NFL Draft took place yesterday.

Seattle, having the 31st pick in both rounds 1 and two, drafted Kelly Jennings (Cornerback, Miami State) in round 1, and Darryl Tapp (Defensive Back, Virginia Tech) in round two. Seattle traded their 3rd round pick for Chicago Bear's veteran Mike Green, Strong Safety.

None of these three players will be on the first string lineup. Kelly Jennings is third string left cornerback, behind Kelly Herndon and Jordan Babineaux. Darryl Tapp is third string behind Right Defensive Tackle Rocky Bernard and then Marcus Tubbs. Mike Green is second string behind Strong Safety Michael Boulware.

I like how the Seahawks stick with their original guys. These guys know how to work together, and can hopefully take us to the next Superbowl. Incase of injury, there will always be good backup.

Arizona Cardinals drafted Quarterback Matt Leinart in the first round, 10th pick overall. Along with wide recievers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald, along with newly aquired Patriots Running Back Edgerrin James, the Cardinals will be a tough offense to beat. They are NFC West, so Seattle will obviously play them twice. Although they now have Matt Leinart, Cardinals head coach Dennis Green has already announced that Kurt Warner will remain the starting quarterback throughout the season. The Cardinals drafted Running Back LenDale White with their second pick. LenDale played with Leinart in college, so with an NFL quality offensive line, they could be the two rookies to beat.

It's smart that the Seahawks have drafted two defensive players first, considering how much they have done with their offense already. With Alexander, Hasselbeck, D-Jack, Engram, and Stevens all returning for the 2006 season, they seem pretty well off offensivly.

The NFL Draft has been finished today.

Seattle selected Guard Rob Sims from Ohio State in Round 4. They selected Fullback David Kirtman from USC in Round 5. While they did not have a Round 6 pick, they drafted Punter Ryan Plackemeier (Wake Forest) early in Round 7, and finally
Ben Obomanu, Wide Reciever from Auburn.

NFL.com wire reports

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (May 27, 2006) -- Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes was arrested for disorderly conduct at a hotel in South Beach, police said.

Holmes was arrested Friday night. He was released from jail after he signed a promissory note to appear in court to be arraigned, Miami Beach police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said.

The events leading to Holmes' arrest weren't released by police.

Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett said he didn't know about the arrest and couldn't immediately comment on it. Holmes was the Steelers' first-round pick in April out of Ohio State.

Roethlisberger injured in motorcycle accident

NFL.com wire reports

PITTSBURGH (June 12, 2006) -- Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, broke his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash in which he was not wearing a helmet.

Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition later in the afternoon, Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital said before surgery.

Ben Roethlisberger has reveled in his rebellious, motorcycle image.
The player's agent, Leigh Steinberg, described the injuries to The Associated Press and said he did not know if there was further damage.

"He was talking to me before he left for the operating room," Jones said. "He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened. He knows where he is. From that standpoint, he's very stable."

Roethlisberger's mother, Brenda, was crying as she arrived at the hospital.

Steelers president Art Rooney II said the team was "encouraged by the early reports from the medical team" at the hospital. "I am sure Ben knows that we are praying for his complete recovery."

The 24-year-old Roethlisberger was without a helmet, police said. He has said he likes to ride without one, a habit that once prompted a lecture from Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher.

Roethlisberger was on his black 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa -- the company calls it the world's fastest bike for legal street riding -- and headed toward an intersection on the edge of downtown. A silver Chrysler New Yorker traveling in the opposite direction took a left turn and collided with the motorcycle, and Roethlisberger was thrown, police said.

The other car was driven by a 62-year-old woman, police said. They didn't immediately release her name and no charges were filed.

Witness Sandra Ford was waiting at a bus stop when she said she saw the motorcycle approach. Seconds later, she said she heard a crash, saw the motorcyclist in the air and ran toward the crash scene.

"He wasn't moving and I was afraid that he had died. ... He wasn't really speaking. He seemed dazed but he was resisting the effort to make him stay down," said Ford, who didn't realize the motorcyclist was Roethlisberger.

Police spokesman Lt. Kevin Kraus said police and homicide units were leading the investigation, a standard practice when there is an accident with critical injuries.

In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger helped guide the Steelers to the Super Bowl title in February at age 23. Training camp for next season begins at the end of July.

Several teammates, including backup quarterback Charlie Batch, linebacker Joey Porter and safety Mike Logan, arrived at the hospital emergency room but did not comment.

Some fans also gathered at the hospital, including Juanita Clark, who sells Steelers paraphernalia.

"I just feel like he's a family member," said her daughter, Loretta Clark.

Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's state law requiring helmets to be worn was repealed in September 2003.

In May 2005, Cowher warned him about safe riding after Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was injured in a motorcycle accident. Winslow tore knee ligaments and was lost for the season.

"He talked about being a risk-taker and I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."

Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s.

Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."

The last five Superbowl losers have been under .500 their following seasons.

The Seattle Seahawks also have many injured players, these are all primarily defensive starters. Seattle's leading wide reciever Darrell Jackson is out with a knee injury. The Hawk's Probowl Left Guard Steve Hutchinson is now a member of the Minnesota Vikings. His replacement, Floyd Womack is out with a hamstring injury. Probowl Center Robbie Tobeck is unable to play due to a surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow. Ends Grant Wistrom and Joe Tofoya are both out due to shoulder injuries. Defensive Tackles Rocky Bernard, Marcus Tubbs and newly signed Russell Davis are also injured. Rocky Bernard is recovering from a knee surgery. Strong Safety Michael Boulware is out with what I believe is a knee injury. Free Safety Ken Hamlin had put on pads and started practice again after his off the field injuries early in the 2005 season. Hamlin was assaulted by several men outside of a Seattle night club. When down, he was beaten with a metallic street sign. He's back now though and angrier than ever.

Seattle's offense is looking good- except their offensive line which is full of changes and injuries. It's going to be difficult for QB Matt Hasselbeck and RB Shaun Alexander to have such amazing seasons like they did in 2005 without the best offensive line in football. I still expect good things, but Seattle's offense was SHUT DOWN in week 1 of the pre-season against the Dallas Cowboys. Seattle was even playing at home, where they didn't lose a single game last season.

I still expect good things, but it's going to take alot of work. Hopefully the players will get well soon.

The Seahawks are going to Indianapolis to face the Colts on Sunday. The game will be nationally televised.

Edit: I forgot to include an injury update for Tight End Jerramy Stevens. He returned to camp today after a knee surgery in April. He fell on it though and injured it again.

Week 1: Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions

The Lion's call Ford Field home, the same place where the Seahawks met their undeserving defeat in Superbowl XL.

I expected a HUGE performance by the Seattle Seahawks. Perhaps coming back to Ford Field haunted them because Detroit was not a very good team last season. The Lions blocked two Hawk field goals, which was embarassing. There was not a single touchdown scored this game, but luckily the Hawks came out on top. In the last drive of the game, Josh Brown nailed a huge field goal for the win. Seahawks: 9 - Lions: 6

Darrell Jackson racks up 113 yards receiving in the 1st quarter-including a 49-yard touchdown; Darryl Tapp with one of five Seahawk sacks on Kurt Warner; Cortez Kennedy delivers his halftime Ring of Honor induction speach; it's another busy day at the office.

By Mike Kahn - Seahawks Insider

SEATTLE - Sunday was a game of the big plays for the Seattle Seahawks.

That’s the only way to describe their 21-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals, pushing the defending NFC Champions into first place all alone atop the NFC West at 2-0 with their eighth consecutive division win, 11th in succession at home and 23rd of the last 26 in Qwest Field.

There were big plays early on offense from the usual suspects such as Matt Hasselbeck, Darrell Jackson and Shaun Alexander. There were big plays the entire game by the Seahawks "Sack Pack" – virtually the entire defense being involved - dumping Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner five times and harassing him unmercifully during the game. And lastly, there were the big offensive plays on the final drive from Mack Strong and Mo Morris to put away a game that seemed a little dicey until Strong’s 4-yard touchdown burst in the fourth quarter.

Indeed, the Seahawks are happy to be undefeated two weeks into the season, while still searching for the offensive rhythm that took them to Super Bowl XL.

“I think that everybody expects us to be the team that was in the Super Bowl, and it’s only the second week,” said Alexander, whose 2-yard touchdown carry tied him with Steve Largent at 101 touchdowns for most in Seahawks history and 90th rushing score tied him for 10th place all-time in the NFL with Eric Dickerson and Curtis Martin.

“We look like a good second-week team instead of a team that’s about to walk into the Super Bowl. But a good second-week offense will make you 2-0, and that’s what we wanted to be.”

With 341 yards total offense, including an electrifying 131 yards passing from Hasselbeck to Jackson in the first quarter alone (including a 49-yard touchdown pass), they got the job done.

By Mike Kahn - Seahawks Insider

SEATTLE - Now comes the real test of focus for the Seattle Seahawks.

After two wins to open the season that ended with collective sights of relief, the Seahawks erupted against the New York Giants to a 42-3 lead in three quarters before settling in with a 42-30 victory Sunday afternoon.

Considering all the buildup heading into this game - with two of the favorites to win the NFC in a rematch from last year’s overtime win for the Seahawks and the Giants insistence that the crowd noise was enhanced at Qwest Field, and all the interesting individual matchups – this ended up as nothing short of an exercise of mastery by the Seahawks.

“It was a great win,” Seahawks fullback Mack Strong said. “But we’ve got a long way to go.”

A record crowd of 68,161 on a sun-splashed Qwest Field was entertained all afternoon in any number of ways – including a frightening but tolerable fourth quarter during which the Giants scored four touchdowns in seven minutes – while watching the Seahawks move to 3-0 in 2006.

The defense, ranked first in the NFC entering the game, had four takeaways in the first half: two Ken Hamlin interceptions and one from Michael Boulware – with Marcus Trufant and Leroy Hill combining for a fumble recovery. That gave the offense great field position throughout the first half and simplified matters considerably.

“We working hard together, and we're growing through filmwork and there's a lot of communication between us on and off the field,” said Hamlin, who leads the team with three interceptions so far. “Because of all the work and the talking we’re doing, our recognition is better and it makes it easier to make plays.”
The victory moves the Seahawks to 3-0 for the fifth time in club history, the third time over the past four years, and it's their 12th win in a row at Qwest Field (24-of-27 during the regular season). They enter next week’s game at Chicago against the Bears with the opportunity to become the first team in franchise history to begin 4-0. The Giants meanwhile slipped to 1-2.

“You really have a great win,” Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said. “But it will also allow us to get after them a little bit for our sploppy play near the end. It's probably good all the way around.”

By Mike Kahn - Seahawks Insider

CHICAGO - Now there’s only one undefeated team left in the NFC, and it’s not the Seattle Seahawks.

With a banged-up offensive line and a trip to Chicago’s Soldier Field against a Bears defense just aching to make a statement in front of a national audience Sunday night, it was a recipe for a long night.

Sure, the Seahawks did get back the right side of their offensive line – Chris Gray and Sean Locklear – for the game despite, spraining their knees last week. But neither was 100 percent, running back Shaun Alexander didn’t play with a cracked bone in his left foot, and Michael Boulware left the game in the second quarter with a concussion.

In other words, they were ambushed by the stout Bears defense, the rapidly evolving passing attack by young quarterback Rex Grossman, and following their 37-6 loss to the (4-0) Bears Sunday night, the upcoming bye week never looked so good.

“They can pass rush with four guys – they were a load tonight,” Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said. “There were a couple instances in the game where we got something going, and then all of a sudden they nailed us with a 15-yard loss. We got in some tough situations there. It was just a case of one of their really fine players beating one of our guys.”

By the end of the third quarter, the Bears had already built a 28-point lead, held a 11-minute advantage in time of possession, and the night became interminable for the Seahawks (3-1). They are now off until traveling to St. Louis on Oct. 15 to meet the Rams.

Strangely enough, the Seahawks had given up just one touchdown the first 11 quarters of the season, and after the bizarre 27-point fourth quarter they allowed in the 42-30 win over the Giants, their opponents now have scored 64 points over the past five quarters.

“This is just really strange what’s happened here,” Seahawks linebacker Julian Peterson said. “We’re a lot better than this. Now we’ve got a couple of weeks to figure out what’s going on and what we’re going to do about it.”

ST. LOUIS - It was time for coach Mike Holmgren to take a stand with his Seattle Seahawks.

According to players, he poked his head into Saturday night’s team meeting, questioning the commitment of the players.

Sunday afternoon, trailing 21-7 at halftime, he did another gut check – although he wouldn’t go into detail over what he said.

“I really can’t - I unloaded on them,” Holmgren said. “I really feel we’re a better football team than we showed in the last game and a half – the first half – ‘Step up! Now it’s time!’ I thought they responded well. We do have pride and they do care. We need that type of second half to win the game.”

With the decisive blow Josh Brown’s 54-yard field goal as time expired, the result was a thrilling 30-28 win over the St. Louis Rams to put the Seahawks (4-1) back into first place atop the NFC West, a half game ahead of the Rams (4-2). On the heels of the 37-6 crushing loss at Chicago two weeks ago, a loss here could have sent the team reeling.

Instead, it was time to celebrate a brilliant come-from-behind victory spearheaded by virtually every aspect of the game. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck ultimately completed 19-of-34 passes for 268 yards, with touchdown passes of 14 yards and 19 yards to Deion Branch. And running back Mo Morris rushed for 70 yards on 19 carries in the second half after just 4 yards on five carries in the first two quarters.

But the game turned with 4:28 left in the third quarter when Hasselbeck hit Darrell Jackson with a 42-yard post for a touchdown in the endzone over three defenders. That cut the margin to 21-14 – starting a run of 20 consecutive Seattle points.

“Matt made a great throw and I just came up with it,” Jackson said. “That was just a momentum swing. You have momentum swings in sports and that was one of them. After that, they were a little flat. It took the air out of them a little bit. Gave us a little bit more air and some breathing room. Being down 14 and being down seven is a big difference in the NFL, so we were one score away. Luckily we hung in there and came back.”

By Mike Kahn - Seahawks Insider

SEATTLE - This wasn’t what anybody expected after virtually a month of being on the road, a bye week, and a roller coaster ride to 4-1 for the Seattle Seahawks.

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon before a packed Qwest Field crowd, the Seattle Seahawks returned home with hopes of extending their lead in the NFC West and the longest home winning streak in the NFL. Instead, they were overwhelmed by the Minnesota Vikings, lost quarterback Matt Hasselbeck indefinitely to a right knee sprain, and were left with many unanswered questions following a 31-13 loss.

The Seahawks lost Hasselbeck following the first series of the third quarter, and Seneca Wallace replaced him for the remainder of the day. Hasselbeck’s status for next week’s game at Kansas City remained questionable. For the game he completed 7-of-17 passes for 127 yards – including a 72-yard scoring pass to Darrell Jackson in the first quarter. Wallace was 14-of-25 for 134 yards, was sacked twice, intercepted twice and fumbled. His fumble into the end zone was recovered by Kevin Williams for the Vikings last touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

The loss ended the Seahawks 14-game winning streak at Qwest Field and stunted their 24-3 mark over the last 27 games played here. The last loss here was Dec. 6, 2004 – in a remarkable final second 43-39 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night, and it was their worst defeat since the 38-9 loss to the Buffalo Bills here the week before – Nov. 28. Now 4-2, they are tied with the St. Louis Rams for first in the NFC West.

Hasselbeck will have X-rays taken Monday to update his future status. As of now, all coach Mike Holmgren will say is he has a right knee sprain.

“I’m not saying anything about what it is,” Holmgren said. “Tomorrow he has his pictures taken.”

Realistically, the Vikings didn’t move the ball all that well on the Seahawks for a game they won 31-13. It really came down to big plays. Besides the final touchdown on Wallace’s fumble, they scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Brad Johnson to Marcus Robinson late in the first half; a 15-yard option pass from halfback Mewelde Moore to tight end Jermaine Wiggins; and a record-breaking 95-yard touchdown run for Chester Taylor in the third quarter, helping Taylor to 169 yards on 26 carries. Ryan Longwell added a 33-yard field goal to start the game.

“We’ve just got to finish plays better,” Seahawks safety Ken Hamlin said. “It’s happened to us before this year and we’ve talked about it. The coaches have talked about it. We’ve just got to focus and make the play until the play is over.”

With MVP running back Shaun Alexander already out for at least another week and tight end Jerramy Stevens just returning for the first time, to lose Hasselbeck when the offense has already been erratic is a tough blow.

By Mike Kahn - Seahawks Insider

KANSAS CITY - Tucked away in a tiny corner in the bowels of Arrowhead Stadium Sunday afternoon stood Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren, who made things perfectly clear.

On this bizarre afternoon, when both the Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs started their backup quarterbacks, the first question regarded his feelings about the Seahawks defense.

“Right now...right this minute?” Holmgren queried. “I thought we would have played these guys a little better. We’ll look at the film to see how we can shore up some things.”

The film will show the Chiefs gained more than 500 yards total offense (before slipping below running out the clock on the final two plays) and 30 first downs on the way to a 35-28 victory over the Seahawks – leaving both teams at 4-3. Because the St. Louis Rams lost at San Diego Sunday, the Seahawks and Rams remained tied for first in the NFC West.

Seneca Wallace was starting at quarterback for the Seahawks in place of Pro Bowler Matt Hasselbeck, who is sidelined with a sprained right knee. And for the Chiefs, former Seahawks employee, University of Washington grad and Puyallup native Damon Huard was starting in place of starter Trent Green, who was knocked out of the preseason with a concussion and has yet to return.

Wallace was competent, completing 15-of-30 passes for 198 yards, including touchdown passes of 8 yards to D.J. Hackett and 2 yards Jerramy Stevens in the first half, and a huge 49-yard touchdown strike to Darrell Jackson midway through the fourth quarter. But he also had two interceptions – the second in the final two minutes of the game. The pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage by Tamba Hali and intercepted by defensive end Jared Allen, who took off with the ball. However, Seahawks receiver Deion Branch ran him down and took the ball back, the officials ruled upon the challenge from Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren. That was his first forced fumble and recovery of his career, but the drive stalled just as they passed midfield, and that’s when Huard ran out the clock.

Nonetheless, Holmgren was pleased with Wallace, who is expected to start at least the next two games while Hasselbeck is on the mend.

“I thought he did a great job,” Holmgren said. “He mis-fired a couple of times, but this is a difficult stadium to play in. Their fans are tremendous. For a young guy in his first start, I think he handled most things pretty well.

“The outcome of this game, in a negative fashion, wasn’t because of Seneca Wallace. He kept us in it, and I think given the circumstances he did a fine job.”

More obvious during the day, though, was the Chiefs offense, ringing up 499 yards. Huard was a career-best 17-of-25 passing for 312 yards and a touchdown, plus Pro Bowl tailback Larry Johnson, who also ran for 155 yards, including four touchdowns. It was just another example of how big plays have haunted the Seahawks the past month.

SEATTLE - Sometimes it takes just a play, a situation that transcends time and circumstance to alter the confluence of life.

In the case of the Seattle Seahawks it may very well have been the air guitar exhibition at midfield from Seahawks front man and sack man extraordinaire Monday night, Craig Terrill.

“After my first (sack), I got my little Pete Townshend arm flail (on the guitar),” Terrill said of his sack celebration repertoire. “That was about all I had for it tonight. I’ve got to come up with something.”

Actually, he came up with plenty. Terrill had three of the team’s seven first-half sacks, and they finished with a season-high nine. Along with Chuck Darby, Lofa Tatupu, Rocky Bernard and Grant Wistrom, the Seahawks defense put a stranglehold on Monday Night Football with a 16-0 win over the Oakland Raiders at Qwest Field.

The victory raised the Seahawks record to 5-3, alone atop the NFC West, ending a two-game losing streak and snapping a bad run for the defense that had given up an average of more than 32 points over the past five games. With the second-place St. Louis Rams (4-4) coming in on Sunday, it was particularly important to change the momentum.

“(Momentum) is extremely important for the walk that we’ve had these last few weeks,” Seahawks defensive coordinator John Marshall said. “It’s been tough on the players, the coaches and everybody. And this is just a step in the right direction.

“The up-front guys were doing it, the guys that were coming on the pressure were doing it – and that was all great coverage in the back. They never let them get anything in the back. Those guys just played – the players had fun.”

The Raiders (2-6) became the first team ever to be shutout twice in one season – (also to the San Diego Chargers), with quarterback Andrew Walter on the run from the start of the game.

And that was just on the defensive side of the ledge. The offense re-established itself as well – despite scoring just 16 points.

“We gained some confidence,” said Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch, who caught the game’s lone touchdown – a 22-yard strike from Seneca Wallace.

“We left some points on the field, no doubt. But this was different. It’s a step in the right direction and it was real important to gain some momentum with St. Louis coming in.”

Josh Brown converted field goals of 20, 25 and 25 yards out to close out the scoring, but it was an indication of how many times quarterback Seneca Wallace drove the team all the way down the field in his second NFL start. And running back Mo Morris finally got the ground game going with the second 100-yard game of his career.

SEATTLE - For the first time, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Seneca Wallace let the guard down on his cool - but not much, mind you. Oh, he clearly stepped up his game of cool sartorial splendor in black pin-striped suit, silk tie and matching pocket square as he stepped to the podium – fiddling with his pocket square with mock arrogance before he broke into laughter.

Make no mistake about it - he was thrilled to engineer the game-winning drive of the Seahawks 24-22 win over the St. Louis Rams Sunday afternoon.

Now 2-1 as a starter since Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Hasselbeck sprained a ligament in his right knee, there is the possibility it was his last start this year. But that didn’t matter. There was also the matter of Mo Morris’ growing confidence with 124 yards; validation for Nate Burleson in the form of a 90-yard punt return; Josh Scobey’s clutch 33-yard kickoff return, and, of course, the business as usual 38-yard, game-winning field goal from Josh Brown.

But for Wallace to piece together a 30-yard drive in the final 2:23 of the game and leave just nine seconds left on the clock to set up Brown’s field goal – well, this one was the highlight of his four-year NFL career.

“It might be (my last start), but I can’t worry about that,” Wallace said. “Matt’s going to come back, we just can’t have a let-up. When my number is called I’ve got to be ready to go; I thought I’ve played pretty well.

“I was excited being able to play in this game. Since I’ve been here, every game we’ve played against St. Louis has gone down to the wire, and I knew it was going to be an intense game – and something like this was going to happen – we were going to end up winning by a field goal or something.”

It was something, all right. The win completed a sweep of the Rams (4-5) and put the Seahawks (6-3) in command of the NFC West going into next week’s game and first meeting of the season at San Francisco. That again has huge implications should they win that one as well. This was the Seahawks 11th consecutive win in the division and also the fifth win in the last nine games against the Rams – the point differential between the two teams is three points in favor of the Rams.

To put it mildly, the importance of this rivalry has grown exponentially every year.

“My goodness, when we play the Rams it's been that type of game the last few times we have played – either at their place or here,” Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said. “They compete like crazy and so do our guys”

SAN FRANCISCO - Mike Holmgren was afraid of this. All week the Seattle Seahawks coach chided his team not to let down after the big win over the St. Louis Rams. Furthermore, he warned, the upstart San Francisco 49ers had moved into a tie for second place in the NFC West.

In other words, beware of Sunday’s trip to Monster Park.

His words rung only too true as the 49ers took control of the game early and never let up on the way to a 20-14 victory. The win moved the 49ers (5-5) into sole possession of second place in the division, just one game behind the Seahawks (6-4).

Shaun Alexander did play for the first time since cracking a bone in his foot on Sept. 24, gaining 37 yards on 17 carries. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck was named the emergency third quarter, but obviously didn’t play. And Seneca Wallace struggled to find his rhythm, blowing hot and cold – completing 19 of 31 for 252 yards, with three interceptions. He threw touchdown passes of 38 yards to Deion Branch in the third quarter and 41 yards to Darrell Jackson in the fourth period.

“I thought we played a very, very poor first half of the football game and they got the lead,” Holmgren said. “The second half we played better, but we couldn’t make up enough ground. I’m disappointed - disappointed in our energy, our tempo and everything in the first half.

“Seneca threw a couple of nice balls in the second half and we got back in it. But I didn’t like the way we played the last seven minutes of the ballgame.”

The Seahawks did have two chances in the closing minutes, but one drive ended on a fourth-and-2 on their own 36, and the other – following an immediate change of possession when Frank Gore fumbled and Grant Wistrom recovered – flopped on Wallace’s final interception.

“I didn’t play that well today for us to win the ballgame,” Wallace said. “It was my fault, nobody else’s fault but mine. It was nothing they did. It was miscommunication on my behalf. The receivers did their job. I didn’t get them the ball and that’s how the turnovers happened.

“We had opportunities and I didn’t take advantage of them.”

It was hardly just reflective Wallace. Gore ran all over the Seahawks for a 49ers' record 212 yards rushing on 24 carries, while second-year quarterback Alex Smith was a solid 19-of-25 for 165 yards and a touchdown pass. To give up 416 yards total offense to a team that averaged 290 entering the game, clearly something was awry on defense.

According to Seahawks defensive end Bryce Fisher, it was reminiscent of the 37-6
loss at Chicago the way Gore burned them on cutbacks, and the offense overall was successful with misdirection screens and reverses.

“They came in with the same basic plan,” Fisher said. “They ran a lot to our weak side and made some good cutbacks. We made mistakes waiting for Gore to come to us rather than going after him.”

SEATTLE - The scene was all too familiar to Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren - seeing the Green Bay Packers on a snow-filled football field. But this was a juxtaposition of life for him; no longer coaching the Packers as he did from 1992-97 and coaching the Seahawks since then.

Besides, this was in Seattle.

“It was kind of wild there for a while,” Holmgren said. “I had been through a couple of those when I coached for them, but not here in Seattle.”

Regardless of the uncommon snowfall – which subsided in the second half, anyway - the Seahawks had to overcome four first-half turnovers more than the weather, and they figured out how.

Riding the spectacular running of Shaun Alexander - with 201 yards on 40 carries in just his second game after missing eight weeks with a cracked bone in his foot – the Seahawks overcame a rocky first half to pull out a 34-24 victory over the Packers Monday night.

Matt Hasselbeck, in his first game back after missing 4½ games with a sprained right knee, overcame three interceptions and a fumble in the first half to throw second half touchdowns to D.J. Hackett, Darrell Jackson and Jerramy Stevens, and finish 17-of-36 for 157 yards. Josh Brown continued his brilliant season of kicking, accounting for all of the points in the first half with field goals of 45, 41 and 37 yards despite the snowfall and slick conditions. Defensive tackle Craig Terrill had a big blocked field goal in the first half as well to complete the highlights, and Nate Burleson was superb returning punts again, and even better in his debut returning kickoffs.

But it was Alexander who set the tone and took control of the game, particularly when you consider the Seahawks controlled the ball 12 minutes more than the Packers.

“That’s kind of our tempo,” Hasselbeck said. “As an offensive line, those guys had a lot of energy. Even when it would have been easy to sag, our offensive line said, ‘Hey, let’s take it to these guys. Let’s run downhill and let’s start moving the ball that way.”

Vote Seahawks!
And on the defensive side of the ledge – after a full year without any interceptions – the Seahawks trio of cornerbacks Marcus Trufant, Kelly Herndon and top draft choice Kelly Jennings each had a pick from Brett Favre.

The victory moved the Seahawks to 7-4, giving them a two-game lead in the division and control over their own fate to retain homefield advantage in the first round of the playoffs, and presently holding the third seed in the NFC.

DENVER - Someday, Josh Brown’s parents will have to bronze his kicking shoes to go along with his baby booties.

For the fourth time this season and sixth time in two years, the Seattle Seahawks place-kicker kicked a game-winning field goal to pull out a game deeply in question. Brown’s 50-yard field goal with five seconds left gave the Seahawks a 23-20 win over the Denver Broncos Sunday night. He also won both games in similar fashion against the St. Louis Rams and the opener at Detroit.

The field goal capped a 54-yard drive in the final 2:13 of the game to pull out a wild and unlikely victory. It was Brown’s third field goal of the night; however, he missed two in the first half, and that stuck with him as much as anything.

“It shouldn’t have come down to that,” Brown said. “It’s the way everything falls into effect. If I make the other two, maybe I don’t make the last two. For whatever reason it was supposed to work out the way it did, and we won the game.”

The Seahawks utilized five turnovers – giving it away just once themselves – to pull out the come-from-behind victory. The win raised the Seahawks record to 8-4, and produced a now commanding three-game lead in the NFC West since both St. Louis and San Francisco lost. The loss dropped the Broncos to 7-5 and put their playoff position in the AFC in peril.

“Turnovers were a big part of this game,” Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said. “That was probably my No. 1 goal coming into it was don’t turn the ball over today. The defense and special teams created some turnovers, and that was huge for us.

“This is a game that I’m sure people maybe didn’t expect us to win, and we almost didn’t. So it definitely helps. We’ll take it.”

The Broncos held the Seahawks offense scoreless until the fourth quarter, when they were suddenly able to get on the board. Rookie defensive end Darryl Tapp gave the Seahawks their first points when first Bryce Fisher, then Chuck Darby hog-tied Jay Cutler as he was about to release the ball. Tapp picked it off and returned it for a touchdown. The defense gave the offense the ball three more times during the game on fumbles, plus Jordan Babineaux picked off a pass in the fourth quarter.

Brown had previously converted field goals of 44 and 23 yards in the second half after missing his only two in the first two quarters. Hasselbeck finished the game 16-of-28 for 168 yards and an interception, while Shaun Alexander had 90 yards on 26 carries, plus a touchdown.

Seahawks @ Cardinals Game Preview

http://www.seahawks.com/uploadedImages/Seahawks/PressReleases/Alexander570_1205.jp g

Source (http://www.seahawks.com/News/News.aspx?id=43302)

The Seattle Seahawks (8-4) travel to Glendale, Arizona, and take on the Cardinals (3-9) in the Seahawks first-ever game at University of Phoenix Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m. PT.

The Seahawks have an opportunity to clinch their third-consecutive NFC West title this week with a win over the Cardinals and a loss by next week’s opponent, the San Francisco 49ers.

The Seahawks and Cardinals both won on the road last week. Seattle used Josh Brown’s NFL record-tying fourth game-winning field goal of the season, a 50-yarder, to win at Denver 23-20. The Cardinals went into St. Louis and defeated the Rams by two touchdowns, 34-20.

After a 21-10 win in Week 2 earlier this season over the Cardinals, the Seahawks have won the last four meetings and seven of the last eight. Seattle leads the all-time series 8-7. In this year’s prior game on September 17, Seattle sacked Kurt Warner five times and Darrell Jackson caught five passes for 127 yards and a touchdown.

Since joining the NFC West in 2002, Seattle is 7-2 versus the team from the Valley of the Sun. Before 2002, Seattle had only won one game in six attempts versus the Cardinals. Seattle swept both games in 2005 to complement a perfect 6-0 division record. Seattle won 37-12 on September 25 at Qwest Field before winning 33-19 in Arizona on November 6. In the first game last season, Shaun Alexander rushed for 140 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. At Arizona he kept up the pace, totaling a season-high 173 yards and two touchdowns, one of which tied his own club record of 88 yards.

This week’s game once again features two head coaches that are very familiar with each other. Mike Holmgren and Dennis Green both coached in San Francisco from 1986-88. Holmgren was quarterbacks coach and Green coached wide receivers before leaving to become head coach of the Stanford Cardinal for three seasons.

From 1992-98, Holmgren (Green Bay Packers) and Green (Minnesota Vikings) coached against each other when both were head coaches in the NFC Central. Holmgren was 5-9 in those 14 meetings. Including the last two seasons, this will be the 20th all-time meeting between these coaches, with Green 10-9 in those games. However, Holmgren is 7-3 in the last 10 contests dating back to 1997.

Cardinals 27, Seahawks 21 (12/10/2006)

By Mike Kahn - Seahawks Insider

GLENDALE, ARIZ. - All week Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren warned his team about how much the Arizona Cardinals had improved.

All week he warned them about how they still had a long way to go to wrap up the division.

All week he talked and talked and talked about not turning the ball over on offense, not allowing big plays on defense, nor having big penalties.

Well, four fumbles a 56-yard touchdown pass on the Cardinals first play from scrimmage and a crucial illegal contact penalty in the final six minutes-later, the Seahawks had coughed up a 27-21 decision to the Cardinals. The loss knocked Seattle (8-5) out of a tie for the second-best record in the NFC, prevented them from clinching a tie for the NFC West title, and now they must defeat the San Francisco 49ers Thursday night to lock up the division.

“I knew it was going to be a battle and I conveyed that to our football team,” Holmgren said. “We were just too careless with the ball offensively. That’s pretty much the game, in my opinion. We had better emotion. I wouldn't compare this with our last road loss (at San Francisco) at all. The two games are quite different from the team stand point.

“We started the game and we fumbled the ball - you’re going to lose. We fumbled the ball and you’re going to lose if you do that as many times as we did it today.”

Matt Hasselbeck was very good after a shaky start, completing 20-of-28 passes for 244 yards and touchdown passes to D.J. Hackett, Nate Burleson and Darrell Jackson. But Hasselbeck, Shaun Alexander (who had 76 yards rushing) and Mack Strong all fumbled to the Cardinals. And Jackson coughed up a complete pass that flew back 13 yards to kill a 22-yard completion and a first down.

And Hasselbeck couldn’t overcome a sack from former teammate Chike Okeafor in the last drive for 8 yards, as his pass to Deion Branch on fourth down came up 1 yard short. The sack hurt, obviously, but even on the play before Hasselbeck needed only another second, but the pressure forced him to throw the ball slightly before he wanted to and Hackett couldn’t get to it despite being open.

“It’s too bad,” Hasselbeck said. “We had the opportunity for a play there and it was just a little off.”

As for Branch, well, they measured even though it was a half-yard short. Hasselbeck felt it was worth a shot, and Branch nearly made a spectacular play slicing through two tacklers. He just didn’t quite reach the 5-yard line.

“I tried to do what I could do to get there,” Branch said. “I had to make the catch before I do anything. I knew where I was at. I tried my best to get it done. We’ve done it before, we didn’t execute.”

---

If Deion Branch was able to get that extra 1.5 feet, we would have won the game. It was miserable to watch.

By Mike Kahn - Seahawks Insider

SEATTLE - Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren looked at the post-game press conference and appeared incredulous over what he had just witnessed from his team. So when he was asked if they had found their identity at this late date of the season, he didn’t hesitate.

“No, no, no,” he said. “Inconsistency is our identity right now.”

And that was it in a nutshell in this unusual Thursday night of football for the Seahawks, during which there was rain, there was wind, and once again, the San Francisco 49ers.

For the second straight game, the Seattle Seahawks failed to clinch the NFC West title – losing their third consecutive division game and second to the 'Niners over the past five games, this one 24-14.

The loss dropped the Seahawks to 8-6, while the 'Niners (6-8) now have the tie-breaker. The Seahawks finish the season at home to San Diego next week and are at Tampa Bay for the final game, while the 'Niners play host to Arizona next week and go on the road to Denver to close out the season. The Seahawks would have to lose both games and the 'Niners win both of theirs for San Francisco to win the division.

Nevertheless, this was tough to take.

“Well, it was a very disappointing evening,” Holmgren said. “We realized what was at stake, but we didn’t play very well. Right now, we’re not playing very well. That’s just the way it is. Defensively, we did some things tonight that were OK, but all in all, we’re struggling right now. We’re going through a tough spot.

“We are not playing very well on offense. We have some new people playing, young people playing, but that’s not the only thing. We’re making poor decisions. We’re dropping passes. We’re not converting. We had two short-yardage situations tonight that normally we can convert, but we didn’t do that. I’m unhappy with how we’re playing.”

The defining moment came with 4:01 left in the game and the 'Niners with a third-and-6 from the Seahawks 20. Kelly Herndon blitzed, had 49ers quarterback Alex Smith wrapped up, and let him get away. Smith then hit Frank Gore down the left sideline for the touchdown. It completed a 73-yard drive on the heels of a 90-yard drive at the start of the quarter to give the 49ers their victory.

SEATTLE - Welcome to the home of the NFC West champions...again.

Despite injuries that decimated the offense all season long, precluding chemistry and momentum, the Seattle Seahawks won the NFC West title for an unprecedented third consecutive year Sunday afternoon.

Despite a heart-breaking 20-17 loss to the San Diego Chargers in the final minute at Qwest Field, the San Francisco 49ers lost 26-20 to the Arizona Cardinals as well, guaranteeing the Seahawks (8-7) will play host to either the Dallas Cowboys or Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 6 or 7. Should the Eagles defeat the Atlanta Falcons next week in Philly or the Cowboys lose at home to the Detroit Lions, the Eagles win the NFC East and Dallas comes here as the wild card. The only way the Cowboys win the division and the Eagles come here is if the Eagles lose and the Cowboys win.

The Seahawks have had a shaky season this year. Last season at this time, the Hawks were 13 (wins) and 2 (losses). Both of the losses occuring early on in the season before the Seahawks offense really began to pick up momentum. This season, the Hawks are 8-7, and will finish up the season in Tampa Bay on Sunday against the 4-11 Buccaneers.

Fortunately for the Seahawks and their fans, the NFC West was a weak division again this year and the Seahawks came out on top. If the Seahawks lose against the Buccaneers (which is very unlikely) they will be going to the playoffs without a winning record. That is unheard of, but I think every Seahawk fan out there will gladly take the playoff spot regardless.

The Hawks will probably host the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card. But since it's the playoffs, this means that if the Seahawks lose one game they are out of it, and due to their record they do not have homefield advantage throughout the playoffs anymore. If the Seahawks do not host the Eagles, they will host the Dallas Cowboys.

Also, the AMAZING SUPER GOOD WORLD CHAMPION PITTSBURGH STEELERS had a horrible season because they are a horrible team. Unlike last season, the Steelers could not cheat themselves into the playoffs and will not be going. Woo!

As expected, the Seahawks beat the Buccaneers. The final score was 23-7.

It's Week 1 of the Playoffs now, the Wildcard. The Seahawks will be hosting the Dallas Cowboys in Qwest Field.

Cowboy's first year starting quarterback for Tony Romo will be playing a Seahawks defense that is full of injuries. Starting cornerback Marcus Trufant was injured against San Diego. The other starting cornerback, Kelly Herndon, was injured against Tampa Bay. Backup Cornerback Jimmy Williams was also injured against Tampa Bay. Both Williams and Herndon were put on injured reserve.

Rookie cornerback and first round draft pick Kelly Jennings will be starting this week against Tampa Bay, along with backup cornerback/strong safety Jordan Babineux. The Seahawks signed former backup strong safety John Howell, who was released at the end of the 05 season (start of 06 after the Superbowl) due to salary cap restrictions. Howell will most likely provide relief for starting strong safety Michael Boulware as Babineux is on cornerback, or provide relief to Kelly Jennings or Babineux (at cornerback). Howell will also probably help out on special teams. The Seahawks also signed former Dallas Cowboy Pete Hunter to play cornerback and special teams.

Some interesting things about the Seahawks, Left Tackle Walter Jones was the only Seahawks starter to play every game this season. He injured his foot during a game early in the season, but had it taped up and continued playing that game after a few drives.

Also, in his lifetime, Matt Hasselbeck has been struck by lightning. Twice. Maybe thats why he's bald?

And on the topic of Matt Hasselbeck, attached to this post is Hasselbeck at age 5 dressed as superman. Courtesy of ESPN.

It is up to the very few veteran starters left standing to hold this team together. It's the playoffs now, and it's gametime at 8:00 PM Central.

The Seahawks have been ravaged by injury. Almost the whole starting defensive secondary (and backup secondary) is injured. The defensive line and linebacking core are missing key players too. The Seahawks offense is no better off. While Hasselbeck and Alexander are still in the game, the rest of the offense is not looking so good. Hasselbeck's two main receivers, Darrell Jackson and D.J. Hackett are both out. One of his backup receivers for these two, Nate Burleson is also out. Right now, Alexander's blocking is just a mess. The whole offensive line is screwed up because of injury.

The Seahawks have an unexperienced defense that has never worked with one another right now. While the offense has it's two main leaders still (Hasselbeck and Alexander, who both suffered injuries earlier in the season) they are also coming in very inexperienced. Hasselbeck lost all of his main receivers, so he will be throwing to the new guy Deion Branch who came over from the Patriot's this season and their 7th round draft pick who has never played a down in an NFL game.

Even with inexperience and injury, the Seahawks can pull this one off. They guys on the field are going to have to play the best game of their lives.

SEATTLE - There is the bizarre, there is the unfathomable, and then there is what happened Saturday night at Qwest Field between the Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card playoff game.

Trailing 20-13 and failing to convert a fourth down play from the Dallas 2-yard line with 6:48 left in the game, things looked bleak for the defending NFC Champions.

But the Seahawks are no ordinary team by any stretch of the imagination, so there is no such thing as a stretch for this team – not even for Jerramy Stevens, whose season is a microcosm of what this team has gone through all the way to Saturday’s 21-20 victory.

“Our team has a lot of character,” said Stevens, who led the team with five receptions and two touchdowns. “We went through a lot last year, losing that game (Super Bowl XL) at the end last year, and having to rebuild and fight through these injuries throughout the team this year. That builds character, and we know we can lean on each other.

“We were all just holding our breath; tonight we were just holding our breath.”

It required a safety when Seahawks rookie cornerback Kelly Jennings stripped Cowboys wide receiver Terry Glenn at the goal line; a 37-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to Stevens; an overturned first down at the Seahawks 1-yard line that made it fourth down for the Cowboys and resulted in a muffed hold by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo on a 19-yard field goal with 1:19 left in the game.

A handful of plays later, it was over. Now the Seahawks will play at Chicago next Sunday at noon, thanks to Philadelphia's 23-20 win over the N.Y. Giants Sunday afternoon.

Bears 27, Seahawks 24 (OT)

By Mike Kahn - Seahawks Insider

CHICAGO - In a season filled with so many twists, turns and role reversals, it figured that the Divisional Playoff game between two teams that have suffered in such a way, would come down to first overtime game of the 2006 NFL Playoffs.

It was the first overtime playoff game for the Seattle Seahawks since the first round of the 2004 playoffs when Matt Hasselbeck called heads, announced they were going to score and promptly gave up an interception for a touchdown to lose on the first play from scrimmage.

This time around, Hasselbeck wasn’t near the coin toss, the Chicago Bears were the opponent, and the result really wasn’t that different – a 27-24 overtime loss to Chicago.

The Seahawks won the coin toss, didn’t go anywhere on their first drive, then set up Robbie Gould, who just barely aced out Seahawks kicker Josh Brown as the Pro Bowl kicker, for a game-winning 49-yard field goal with 10:02 left in overtime.

Shaun Alexander led the Seahawks with 108 yards rushing, while Hasselbeck was 18-of-33 for 195 yards, a touchdown pass to Nate Burleson and an interception. Bears quarterback Rex Grossman was 21-of-38 for 282 yards, also with a touchdown and an interception.

Although the Seahawks had every opportunity to put away the Chicago Bears in the fourth quarter, a bobbled snap on a fourth-and-1 just after the two-minute warning crushed their last formidable drive.
