THis part of werewolf.com is almost totally devoid of good Therianthropy topics! So I made a new one! Crazy ph-shifts! Weeeee!! What is yours? Mine are always crazy...sitting on my tail...one second it is gone, then there! I am hyper, don't mind me. Anyway, tell me about your crazy and not so crazy phantom shifts.

I don't know if I would call what I've experienced at times phantom shifts, or any kind of shift, but since what I've experienced sounds like what you are describing:

I have at times either conjointly, or seperately in different combinations felt, (but not seen) as though I have a tail, paw pads, claws, sharp teeth, differently positioned ears, a snout, horns, and that little split in skin that mammals have between the bottom of their nose and their upper lip.
Sometimes I've felt these when I have been excited about something in some way, or oppositely relaxed and sleepy.
I have also felt them when I have attempted to shapeshift to an animal in some manner (which I have "for real" attempted in various ways), another subject unto itself, and one I don't generally chat about.
I have felt them when I have been sparring in martial arts classes I used to be involved in, and also oh so cliche to the subject of shifting during periods of a full, or fulling moon. Oh yeah, also sometimes during twilight, and smelling cooking beef at assorted meal times.

Phantom shifts are not uncommon. Ever hear reports about people who have had a limb amputated but say they still "feel" it?

The brain basically has a "mapping system". Through trauma, or a strong will, the brain can be made to "map" something that isn't there. I wouldn't personally call this a "shift" but whatever, labels are labels whether I like them or not.

Anybody can have a "phantom" shift - whether it's extra arms, different organs or "tails" or other limbs. It's basically part imagination and part neurological error (temporary although some can be permanent).

I suppose it has its uses with therianthropy/spirituality but general "phantom shifts" aren't all that therianthropic. So, I can't help but think it is slightly arrogant of you to say yours is a good therianthropic topic and largely ignorant to say that almost no other topic here ("almost totally devoid" as you put it) is good.

Greetings,

This seems like more of a fun topic. As far as 'crazy' phantom shifts go, the techniques in my meditation, as well as being useful for spiritual purposes, also make for a good party trick :)
I've talked a couple of my friends through various stages of it and then laughed my arse off as they try not to sit on their tail or get it caught in the door - or cant speak properly because their tounge is hanging out :)

P.S. For the benefit of those who dont know better, these changes are only in the persons head and not real.

I see your point, but personally, I have neverreally met a non-Therian thathas had a ph-shift.

Uh...hi. Anyway, I made this for those Therians who regualrly have ph-shifts...does that happen to you?

I'm a therian and I rarely, if ever, have any ph-shifts. At best, I have two prick-ears (mostly horse-like). At worst, I'm human.

I'm not a therian, but thing is I do still have my own views on the subject. And not so much anymore but there was a time where I would have them a lot. I've even had "mental shifts", have a "dream shift" every night (even now) and yet I'm still not a therian. Go figure.

Well done DW! I've said it before and I've said it again. You don't have to be a therian to shift. I sometimes have the feeling of wings, this usally occurs when I'm feeling very happy about something, or that a great weight (of a worry or responsibilty) has been lifted off my shoulders, I fancy that I can feel wings protruding from my shoulders. Whats so odd about that you might wonder. I'm a feline therian and cats generally don't have wings!

Maybe you're a winged cat. I am a winged wolf (thus the name).

Winged wolf? That's a new one on me. Is that like a wolf/angel hybrid or wolf/bird or wolf/bat or some mythical creature on the lines of pegasus that hasn't yet been discovered/invented?
I'm not being cynical by the way, I am genuinly interested. I don't think I'm a winged cat, I can't tell you why other than it doesn't feel right. Personally I'm more inclined to believe that wings are a subconsious symbol of freedom hence I feel like I have sprouted wings when I am particularly happy, or a great weight has been lifted off my shoulders, or maybe I have been drinking too many cans of Red Bull :D

I suppose there are alot of hybrid creatures in mythology such as Gryphons etc. (a personal favourite of mine). As for winged wolves, I know of none in any myths that I've read but I've seen them referred to online as Lupogryphs. This could easily be a name someone has made up.

I have been looking into it, but I'm not sure why I have wings. I thought it was a rare thing, but I have met many winged Therians. Some think that our other theriotypes or maybe totems give us the power of their wings, but I'm not sure. A logical thhought is defense, but...

Sounds plausable. I have two totems (or one totem and one spirit guide). My first (the cat) has been with me as long as I remember. The second is an eagle (or hawk), this one came to me (or was given to me) shortly after a nasty accident last year that resulted in my foot literally hanging off. (Thank God for modern technology and titanium plates and screws!!) I was lucky not to loose my foot let alone be able to walk (albeit with a distinct limp). Shortly after the accident I did a working and found that although I could still spiritually shift, my ankle injury also affected me there. I couldn't use my left hind foot. I was limping through a forest and I met a man in white robes. Somehow I knew him, or at least I felt I did, but I couldn't place him. The love he seemed emit was incredible, not just for me, but for the trees, the grass and everything around him. He was like a big ball of love. He touched my head and pointed to the sky and an eagle (or hawk) seemed to appear from his hand and take flight. I was told to follow, suddenly I become an eagle and this other eagle is leading me high into the sky. At first I was afraid I would fall out of the sky, but then the other eagle told me to trust in my wings. He taught me how to dip and swoop and climb. It was superb. We landed on a beach full of children playing and laughing. A child came tearing towards us and I was terrified. The kid was going to trample us but I couldn't run away. The eagle reminded me that I didn't need to run, I could fly. Since then I have had the eagle totem/spirit guide. Even though I can now walk both in real life and in the spiritual world (with a limp), the eagle is still with me and sometimes flying is easier than running. Though I can't say if I have ever combined the two. Perhaps that is what your therian is? Two theriotypes working in tandem rather than swapping and changing depending on your requirements at the time? I don't think the eagle is another theriotype for me, I have never phantom shifted into an eagle, though I have felt wings, but that was happening long before the eagle made its presence noticed. Then again, if I can shift spiritually into an eagle then maybe it is another theriotype. Which brings me to a question... in fact I think I'll put it on the board!

I've had a few phantom shifts. When i was little i used to think i had a tail and was always checking to make sure i wasn't sitting on it also for a while it feels like i have wings, usually when i'm happy and feel on top of the world. Recently i've had this feeling that my palms and the ball of my foot are much more padded than they actually are.

Well, I don't really have any thing to do with birds, but one of my totems is Owl. But I don't really think that Owl applies to the "giving me wings" thing.

Anyway, the ph-shift to my wings is pretty cool. Too bad I can't fly with them...

I'd be surprised if they could get me off the ground. Oh, but I love them...I can feel them right now. And when I lean back agaionst a chair or wall, they hurt because they get smashed. Its hard to sit with your back on something and then feel wings or a tail and you realize you smashed them. All that moving around to comfort yourself drives me crazy.

Yeah, try asking someone to shift their butt because they are sat on your phantom tail, its enough to make you wish you were a lizard therian :D

Probably, but ripping ones tail off would save an embarressing scene, but I'm not sure if a phantom cat tail would grow back :D
