Hello;
I'm new here because I'm seeking information about something I read recently. I was re-reading Gary Brandner's The Howling, and this sentence caught my eye: "The doomed crew of the Spanish vessel Louisa met a ghastly fate on the Aegean island of Skiathos, said to be infested with werewolves."
As a writer, I am always looking for an interesting new idea. Does anyone know more about this alleged historical incident?

Nope. Not me. It is probably just a myth.

I'd wager it was an alleged historical incident from the imagination of the writer to add color and "realism" to his story.
However, if the author did use the reference from an outside source I suggest you try to contact him and ask him what source he used to find out more about it. I'm suspect he would be happy to supply you with the information.
I've been reading legends and historical references about werewolves and other wereanimals for years now from old and new works. I haven't ever encountered a reference to Skiathos w/ werewolf occupants. Doesn't mean there isn't one. As an alternative to contacting the author I'd say hit the research books, and any historical references you can get your paws on. If you've been doing that already dig deeper.
Maybe instead of first trying to find references to werewolves try finding out information about the location and it's history. One search may lead to another, perhaps. Good Luck ~
