I am really surprised that no one has started a thread about the World cup football, i would like to know who you support, your views in general and who you think will win.
I am gunning for England to win, what about you? :p

Ok, I don't follow soccer, those my views are a little skewed-

World Cup is nasty during exam week in Australia, especially in international accomidation, because live coverage means the games are shown at about 1am and people cheering keeps you awake.

People getting excited and jumping on couches is a good way to lose your several hundred dollar bond.

A late night match keeping some of us up (or some awake due to others watching who later got bored and wandered out too) meant that a few nights ago 7 of the 8 people in my flat were in the same place at the same time. This is a record. We have never had all 8 of us together at once.

I have no idea who is playing, but I suppose I am barracking for Australia if they still happen to be in the running.

C'mon Argentina!

The games have been so weird this year, a lot of 0-0's.

I should make a new rule-
Your football shall be called soccer in this forum. Our soccer will remain soccer. No exceptions.

And it pleases me greatly to see other people posting in this forum.

Otherwise, I cannot contribute as I do not pay attention to soccer.

And soccer sucks.

Pretty bad.

So does Okamiotoko.

Edit: Three hours later, I realize that three women posted in Sports, in the same thread, in a row. If there is ever going to be an apocalypse, this is surely the first sign.

American football is such a pansy sport, there's barely any bloodshed and no teams at risk from their countries killing them off. God bless South America and its crazy soccer!

Rugby and Rest of the world Football, real sports! :D

Edit: Australia tied with Brasil today at 0-0, Brasil was barely playing though it was such crap.

Die.

I agree. How do you know there is no bloodshed? I have personally watched people get busted noses, fingers come through the skin of the hand when they break, and I myself have bled on several different occasions from getting hit hard. So there is bloodshed in Our Football.

Edit: Also we can't help it if a country is so fanatically obsessed with a sport that they would kill their team.

Well, actually I do know there is bloodshed in football when you go with just the small things like scraped knees and trashed noses and bad backs. Football played by anyone other than the professionals on TV do suffer a lot more than that as well. My dad was a football player.

Basically, what I do not like about American football is pretty much what I do not like about many american sports. Our professional teams are payed so much and only for small amount of time, nothing is a real game anymore just show. It's like professional wrestling only with less showman ship. I am sure there are players that do actually play their asses off on the professional teams but the majority always seem to be just jerking around. Especially the freaking Vikings.

I actually like playing football because I'm a good tackle. :P

Yay hypocrisy

Okay so I shouldn't have said pansy, I'm sorry, sheesh, can I not die now? :P

I was just being a jerk, but I did say "rest of the world football." anyway. I'll stick with soccer :P Despite it using the other name prior to America's adaptation.

Of course there is another aspect to the confusion and that is that "soccer" is actually an entirely different game:-
Football is played with two teams of 11 players, soccer has 5 players.
The ball used in soccer is slightly smaller, as is the pitch, the edges of the pitch are fenced so there's less throw ins unless the ball is hit high out of play.
Football matches are 90 minutes long whereas soccer matches are 60.

Football (as in "proper" football) is also a game for pansies, like it's American cousin. Of all the sports to have come from the stable of football, only two don't count as pansy sports in my book. One is the sport of God - Rugby, and the other is Aussie rules.

But back to the world cup, the USA was one of the favourites to win due to being ranked 4th in the world. Dunno where that came from, you got owned!
But then, England aren't exactly up to scratch either (considering we're also tipped to win it). Indeed none of the "top" teams seem to be doing so well, this could well turn out to be a very interesting competition.

Amen brother!

Although in Australia we have two flavours of Rugby.

Rugby and Union. Minor rule differences but Union is the more violent.

American Football is a little tougher than you want to give these guys credit for. While pain is usually on a lower scale, the level of play is much higher.

Would you rather play Rugby with this guy:

Put it this way, at school I was on the American Footie team (the sport enjoyed a bit of interest over here when the London Monarchs won some tournament or other), I even broke my finger in training... and I wasn't even allowed to play Rugby because my dodgy sight and back.
That rugby player in the pic looks like he has a beer gut, but make no mistake, a lot of that is muscle! Tackling these guys is like trying to run full speed into a cow.

A FIFA World Cup thread at last :D ....finally someone's come up with it..

i'd rather call it football..(most of the people around the world call it so)...and it does NOT suck  , in fact it's the most popular game on the face of earth...and the FIFA world cup is the biggest sporting event on the planet, billions and billions of people watch it

32 teams are taking part in the tournament this year..and i am supporting Italy (though i doubt they'll cross the second round.. )...and i like both the European and Latin style.....the Europeans play with class, beauty and an ordered fashion :D ..on the other hand, the Latins are quite agressive(dunno if the spellin's right)...they play with speed, agility and cunning..and most o' their attacks are pretty dangerous.. :D

anyway Germany won the match with Ecuador (3-0) and England tied with Sweden (2-2)

and one funny thing...in the last 38 years, England has never won with Sweden, even yesterday they tied (which is definitely not winning :D ) (but still i like the English team  )

I'm glad my post has got some responses, but i do agree with Hoplite we should be calling it football not soccer because that is what it is.

I am not the biggest football fan, but the World Cup is a great way to show your support for your country and i personally think everyone should be doing so, what other sporting event has so much coverage at one time?

West, i do have to agree with you to a point, footballers can be very wimpy at times compared to say Rugby, but no ones perfect.
Sporting wise i am a real fan of Boxing and the U.F.C, lots of bashing and blood potential and there are a few footballers i would love to see fighting in the ring.

Thank you to everyone for your comments, and i hope to see more of the same. :D

Yeah i know, we have got to play better than the other night, but then saying that the two goals we did get in were really good, they really need to defend like there is no tomorrow and stop giving free kicks away due to stupid tackles.
I still have faith but i do have my doubts like you, the team seem to have the determination to win they just need to pull themselves together.

I have been slightly disappointed with Holland, Argentina and Brazil, so used to seeing fantastic goals from them in previous games, to me they really haven't lived up to the standards i expect to see from them.

all the teams have finished 3 matches yesterday...and the knockout round's gonna start 2day.. :D

Germany vs. Sweden and Argentina vs. Mexico ... what a night

but what i hate is Brazil's luck....there were no big teams in their group, so they didn't face serious trouble to cross the first round..but vs. Ghana in the second round means going directly into quarter finals pretty easily  (i don't want them to win the cup this time :D )....

anyway i've missed couple of matches  ...cuz watching the 2nd match means remaining awake till 3 a.m regularly....

I should point out I would love to see Enlgand go all the way and win it (God knows it would be about bloody time). But unless we can tighten up at the back we're going to have our work cut out. It doesn't matter how wonderful the goals we're knocking in are if the opposition promptly bring the ball back down our end and equalise.
We also need a manager that will get on the team at halftime. Too often we go 1-0 up in the first half and then promptly sit on our laurels and bugger me if the other side then comes along and takes the lead.

And of course now we're into the realms of that thing we English fear most in football - the Penalty shootout!

Truly, Wayne Rooney has a face made for Rugby.

England are through to the quarters, where we'll play Holland or Portugal. That'll be interesting.

Argentina will almost certainly cream the Germans, which means there won't be the traditional bit where the Germans knock us out with a penalty shoot-out.

well i may be a bit late, but i think England lost because of ROONEY, yeah he is the reason behind the defeat..and he got what he deserved...he might have been given a yellow card after the foul he commited...but when he pushed (probably) Ronaldo, he crossed the line...and he was sent off due to his ill temper...i saw Rooney for the first time in this tournament and frankly i don't like him at all...he may play good but his nasty temper will cost him a lot...
