Should we not consider for a moment the existence of the supernatural? They might have taken a leaf out of the Devil's book: His greatest power is making us believe he does not exist!
For centuries reports have come in from the most remote parts of the world regarding ghosts, vampires, werebeasts etc...
It is possible that some are simply folklore...but some must be based in reality?

Why is it that people keep saying "there's so many stories about it must come from somewhere" or "the story goes back so far it has to be based on something true"?
It's ignorance. Back then owning a cat was a heresy enough to have you EXECUTED. Just because you had a cat. Or a mole. Or a birthmark. As for werewolves well there's multiple possibilities: lycanthropy (no not shapeshifting - the mental disorder) - somebody suffers with it and the science-less folk deem him possess/a demon and blah blah... Skin allergy to silver - a rare but not too unusual skin allergy where the skin reacts very badly to contact with silver. Same thing with vampires: somebody indulges in a common blood fetish and or liked their meat rare. Or, they suffered from one of the numerous skin disorders that caused people to react badly to the sun (such as xeroderma pigmentosum which causes skin to literally burn in daylight - sound familiar?). These disorders aren't new - they would be present even in very olden times (as in: ancient) but the ignorance of people in highly suspicious and superstitious times would cause a simple disorder to be perceived as something supernatural.
Now add the stories' longevity. This works against it's validity. Ever played the game whispers? Basically a story gets told, then retold, and retold again, over and over down the ages. Thing is it's never retold the same way so interpretations differ and that alters the story when the listener becomes the storyteller. Now add many people's fondness for exaggeration and embellishing and the chances of a story being anywhere near the actual truth after thousands of years of this are probably around 1/100,000.
Take Santa, not an old tale. Started as an actual guy who simply did good deeds. Now he's some jolly fatman with magic powers.
So a recap:
1. The longer a story is told and retold the less likely it is to be anywhere near true.
2. Superstition and ignorance of the times can take simple/innocent things and make them out to be supernatural or demonic.
3. If you combine 1 and 2 above you, my friend, have a myth.
So no, I see absolutely nothing in all of my experience and perceptions and logical calculations of the world around me, the patterns of nature, the workings of all we have ever known; to indicate these fancy, embelleshed, myths have even the slightest ounce of fact in them.

In theory, few things are completely impossible. Scientists have already predicted the odds that a one kilogram rock will, under its own power, levitate upwards one meter into the air before dropping back down.
But I wouldn't expect it to happen, nevermind rely on it to do so.
Likewise, most legend is based upon something similar to fact. But Occam's Razor states that a simple solution - people mistook a normal wolf for a werewolf - is much more likely than a complex one.
Short version :
Don't take "possible" to mean anything.

Then how about the plausible?
Could it be taken that for the enhancement of story-tellers and bards of the ancient world that fantastic creatures were made as both heroes and villans?
O.k. Enough said for a second question. Does it need to be that what has been seen can merely be told about? It's what a person sees that's in the story, thier perspective. This does not mean it's a lie, just what they saw.
Add on to make normal things ledgendary.
That's when what was becomes a myth.
However, that's not always so. Some things exsist merely to contradict, even though the base of thier forms come from the same lines.
Atoms and molecules may have the same basic principals, where protons, neutrons and electrons are concerned, but that does not mean that they can all be slueced together. With each variation and addition, they can be similar in base but vastly different as to the reactions that the combinations aquire. As different as water is to metal.
The same is true with truth and myth.
The truth about myth is that there can be some kind of truth to the myth, but that doesn't mean that the myth has surpassed the truth to become something entirely different from what it was to begin with, even with the same bases.

to awnser the question possible yes but plasuable no.
certian things like premonitions and gohsts and stuff like that MAY exist or it may not but in my eyes if it cant be proven and it cant be disproved than it is possibe that they may be out there.
on the subject of myths, all myths come from at least a tiny bit of truth, or are baised on somekind of religion. For ex: take a look at greek mythology, it is all based on at least in part on the gods and goddesses of that time. but thats just my thoughts on the subject

Mythology derives from history and was used to explain everything that science couldn't, For example if a volcano erupted, it wasn't the build up of magma beneath the earts crust rather that the gods were angry. Don't believe anything that sounds too good to be true and take everything you read with a pinch of salt anyway. gullibility= Vulnrability.

Or, they suffered from one of the numerous skin disorders that caused people to react badly to the sun (such as xeroderma pigmentosum which causes skin to literally burn in daylight - sound familiar?).
Just a curiosity:
There's a disease that the scientist think it was this that made the myth of the vampire: porphyria. It's the lack of iron in the blood. The person who is affected by this will seek food with taste of iron (like blood). It also make the gums to thin (making the teeth to seem bigger), the skin becames palid and sensitible to radiation (the sun burns them), and causes mental confusion and irritability (causing states of catatonia ["torpor"] and aggressiveness ["frenzy"]).
It's good thing that now this disease has a cure...

Porphyria is a group of different disorders caused by abnormalities in the chemical steps leading to the production of heme, a substance that is important in the body. The largest amounts of heme are in the blood and bone marrow, where it carries oxygen. Heme is also found in the liver and other tissues.
Multiple enzymes are needed for the body to produce heme. If any one of the enzymes is abnormal, the process cannot continue and the intermediate products, porphyrin or its precursors, may build up and be excreted in the urine and stool.
The porphyria disorders can be grouped by symptoms—whether they affect the skin or the nervous system. The cutaneous porphyrias affect the skin. People with cutaneous porphyria develop blisters, itching, and swelling of their skin when it is exposed to sunlight. The acute porphyrias affect the nervous system. Symptoms of acute porphyria include pain in the chest, abdomen, limbs, or back; muscle numbness, tingling, paralysis, or cramping; vomiting; constipation; and personality changes or mental disorders. These symptoms appear intermittently.
The porphyrias are inherited conditions, and the genes for all enzymes in the heme pathway have been identified. Some forms of porphyria result from inheriting an abnormal gene from one parent (autosomal dominant). Other forms are from inheriting an abnormal gene from each parent (autosomal recessive). The risk that individuals in an affected family will have the disease or transmit it to their children is quite different depending on the type.
Attacks of porphyria can develop over hours or days and last for days or weeks. Porphyria can be triggered by drugs (barbiturates, tranquilizers, birth control pills, sedatives), chemicals, fasting, smoking, drinking alcohol, infections, emotional and physical stress, menstrual hormones, and exposure to the sun.
Porphyria is diagnosed through blood, urine, and stool tests. Diagnosis may be difficult because the range of symptoms is common to many disorders and interpretation of the tests may be complex. Each form of porphyria is treated differently. Treatment may involve treating with heme, giving medicines to relieve the symptoms, or drawing blood. People who have severe attacks may need to be hospitalized.- source - (http://digestive.niddk.nih. gov/ddiseases/pubs/porphyria/index.htm)
Yes, thanks Arawn for bringing it up. As I said there are multiple diseases which can be considered a possible start for the myths of things like vampirism or werewolfism. Nowadays we know these things aren't supernatural and do not make people become demonic creatures. It's just a disease and many are treatable or curable. Back then, however, they would not know about medical sciences and would misunderstand these symptoms. This is why I very, highly, strongly doubt vampire/werewolf myths being based on actual accounts. Rather, they're likely misunderstood illnesses or simple things that get misconstrued (is that the right word to use?).

Well I would consider that there is a possibility for the supernatural, for the simple greatest anomoly of all has already happened...life. Nothing was turned into something and the big bang occured. It was probably the greatest long shot that there ever has been in my opinion (since I'm not going to go find out if there are bigger long shots, I'm going to stick with my opinion), yet here we are today. Everything is possible, it is just not probable. Especially the fact that still today there is no cold hard evidence of the supernatural. People experience strange things, but a lot of it can be explained or proved to be in their head. We have yet today to call the paranormal/supernatural to be cold hard fact and part of life, which is why we are having this discussion.

Let it be noted that most if not all supernatural beings such as werewolves and demons seem to stem from a misinterpretation of human pyschology.
And how do you know it was a longshot? Does ANYBODY know what happened before the big bang? If the universe existed? What was there before? You automatically assume that this is the first manifestation of life and a universe. No one ever seems to question that maybe something was there before the Big Bang.

That doesn't make it any less real in a person's mind. And that is where these things achieve greatest potency. How much is changed on the strength of an idea?
And the pyschology of things such as the Werewolf are no less intersting.

Which is why I became so fascinated with werewolves. I loved the idea of suddenly changing into this ferocious monster which becomes a conduit for all your anger and grief, whether an actual physical transformation, or mental shift to, for example, a separate personality.

Depending on what there was before, if anything, it would still have to follow the same rule that there still had to be a beginning for that universe or whatever it would be considered, whether it was the big bang or not.

I agree with you Darkwolf about the dillussions from the people of the past. As a matter of fact, Just the other night there was a story on the Science channel proving that some people eating wheat bread caused illusions etc. I don't remember what was in it that caused it. Sorry.
But I know allot of people were so paranoid back then. But when we get current issues of the unknown. We're more logical minds today. And we always try to understand the unknown with Scientific logical thinking. Like.. How could that door have slammed by itself? Once you rule out windows open drafts. Then you decide it's a poltergist.
Sorry Dark wolf .. I now am a true believer in gohsts.. and werewolves. At least the entity of a werewolf. Maybe the real werewolves of the past did expose themselfs to villagers etc. And scared the living day lights out of them so there stories did spread like wild fire. Causing complete panic throught the planet. (And the stories getting disstorted each time it passed onto the next person.) I'm not saying they were covering the globe but I do think it's very possible there were few. Now days though people can't believe in the unknown without real hard evidence. (And I'm one of those people.) I don't just jump on a band wagon trusting the stories and hype. I believe once I have these experiences for myself. The trueth is the unknown will always remain unknown until everyone is face to face with it.
Good luck everyone! But I ask what will you all do once you are face to face with the trueth? Will you be able to eccept it? Or will you keep re-evaluating it untill you've convinced yourself that you have gone crazy or hallusinating? I think just once there are some rare true events. And many others are probably false. But the fact is, I've had this happen to me. No I don't drink, nor take drugs. I'm begining to think that the unknown has choosen to flock around me since birth. (I'm not talking about vampires.
I'm talking about gohsts and now a werewolf entity. That seems more real than a gohst. Darkwolf it returns when it feels like it. Walks on my roof. What the heck is big enough to hop onto my roof? I mean it is big. Bears in Iowa? Never mind lol. See I also am trying to figure out logicaly what this could be. Try sitting here once where I sit. And hearing this and then leaps onto my deck etc.. Big black thing. (I've thought about going out in the dark alone with a flashlight. But the trueth is. I'm too stricken with fear to budge when it happens. I wish someone was here with me when it happens. Maybe you would be brave enough to take a look.) Maybe it wants me to.. come out and say hello. Who knows lol. I'm just too scared I guess. Something that big I can't get past the fact it must be hungry ;). Dark wolf try camping out in my yard under a full moon. I dare you . lol Hell I won't even camp out in my own yard. Although it's never hurt anything or anyone. I think it wanted to prove to me it truely exists .. That it does. I am sorry I've shaken the safe ground you walk on. With my experiences. My opinion, People just will never be ready for the trueth. (What will they do when there hallusination bites them in the ass?) How can they explain it then? God I hope that never happens. Well Maybe the unknown should remain that way. People can't grip the logics to it. I think I've spouted off long enough about this subject. I'm agreeing with you Darkwolf about the past events though. I'm talking about the event from NOW! Okay if anyone else has any of these true live events walking on there house. Do please tell everyone! I'm tired of feeling like I'm the only one. And everyone looking at me like I'm full of crap. Maybe I am the only one? Gulp that's just not fair!
Have a grand weekend.

I believe there are realities that have breed a lot of folklore, and it is possible that some of those realities are of legit preternatural origin, but it seems more probable that most of the realities of folklore are more mundane in nature. However improbable the latter though, does not exclude possibility, and thus as is obvious results in a great deal of conjecture on said topic.
Myself, I believe anything is possible, albeit some things more probable than others, --at least in the reality that is generally accepted by the majority.--

Than that would be due to the circumstances not the fact it's silver, I'm sure were a similar situation were to arise with a different metallic necklace the same would happen. The reason "werewolves" are supposidly highly allergic to silver is because silver happens to be a good anti-septic, and lycanthropy was thought of as a disease. Same relation as wolves equal servants of satan no reason beyond superstitions what so ever, and I fail to see how an allergy of any kind is "kewl."

Oh…The closed mindedness…It hurts!
In truth, there (if it exists) probably is proof of the paranormal. However, there are also so many hoaxes, the task of separating fact from fiction becomes impossible. It is fine to say nothing exists beyond what we scientifically know (realizing you have just precluded science from the matter), it is even fine to blame the ignorance of others in comparison to your own sophistication. But, has anyone taken the time to investigate these phenomena themselves? If not, you simply have nothing further than opinion.
Now, I realize this is just a message board, yet to claim the nonexistence of the preternatural based solely on never having seen it yourself (just like claiming it all exists after witnessing one incident) rings of a naiveté which runs as deep as Marxism.
Oh well…

Yes, I believe the supernatural excists. However you hear about these occurances as mythes and not facts. However, there is no such things as gosts! Guess what happened? I've only been living in my new house for 2 weeks. And something is walking on top of my roof and it is a 2 story house. Even my 8yr old daughter woke up and came into my room. strablonde, I know you can't say hi, but you can do some other things. First, you can go for a drive in the night, and you can see if the thing is actually there. Second (and this has to be done without any rain, and it must be a purfectly flat and level surface) you can to put a cup of full water on the roof and see if some water is removed in the morning. Find some actual ways that make you know if the roof has something on it or not. If there is something on it, let a bullet say hello. If there isn't something there, hire a builder to repair your roof to a quiet state beucase it must be getting bigger in the day and getting smaller in the night, which is noisy.

Have you made any report to local authorities or a paranormal investigator? I know that sounds stupid, but maybe you have a stalker -- human or otherwise. Keep in mind: your garden variety weirdos often have good equipment(ie:climbin g/repelling gear, rope, etc.). At any rate, anything landing on the house is BAD and should be looked into by some kind of trained/experienced professional.

Yeah I agree. I just don't want too much attention. I hope it goes away and leaves us alone. I don't want the nahbors to think we're weird. Having Paranormal Scientists with there meters poking around the nahbor hood. If it continues I won't have a choice. Although the fella I bought this house from came over last week and asked me if I really like it here? As if he's in shock that I would. It is haunted. An old man died here.. he smoked allot and drank. I can sometimes smell him, you know that smell. When someone has been drinking allot and comes & stands by you. Well I said to him I know you're here. I can smell you. I don't think it is him on the roof. If anything he's affrayed of whatever followed me. I will post with more experiences as they happen. Sorry to alarm any of you. I just was wondering if anyone else has had the same experiences as I have? Oh well. Thanks anyhow.
