View Full Version : Why are we so drawn to were-creatures?

I believe that we are so attracted to them so much because they represent the balance of the machinizations of man and the order of nature. Humans are a pathetic species that are weak in both mind and body. They fear unknown order of the natural world around them, while at the same time despising the bleakness of the barriars they have created(cities). When you combine the sadistic soul of mankind with the predatory ferocity of an animal, you get the lycanthrope. Fear them in the old days, respect and love them in the new era. Recently the lycanthrope has been seen in a new light. Instead of representing a corrupt balance, they now represent a benign and honorable protective scale that we should have relized before. Are were-creatures evil, good, or just trying to make their way in the world? You Decide

Humans are a pathetic species that are weak in both mind and body.
Yet, for all our weaknesses, look what we have done. How can you call humans "weak of mind" when we have made fire, discovered how to harness electricity, transplant organs from one body to another, and even be able to see atoms, among other impressive things. We compensate for our weakness in body just like any other species...dogs, cats, birds puff themselves up and make themselves appear stronger and larger until (whoops), they're forced to prove themselves physically. OK, so we do it a different way. How does that make us weak of mind or body? We, along with several thousand other species, are just trying to survive.
When you combine the sadistic soul of mankind with the predatory ferocity of an animal, you get the lycanthrope.
No, you get clinical lycanthropy. Or "Angsty teenager who doesn't know what to do with him/herself" is also a valid answer. People think that predators are vicious ad ferocious 24/7/365. You know how much energy that would take? If you've seen a dog in the red zone attacking another dog, you know how much energy it takes to keep the dog in that zone. To keep that up all the time like what people think about werewolves and the like? That's called exhaustion, or even suicide if you go that far.
You Decide
THe concept of were-animals and p-shifting has largely been refuted. So we can't say they're doing much anyway. THerians, however, seem to be trying to make their lives better by connecting through the spirit of an animal. I'm going to guess you've never heard of Nagel's Bat. It's that main concept some people might be trying to experience: what it's like to be a quadruped, have ears that can be manipulated, see in different tones...and of course, with everything we have, all we can do is imagine.

I'm going to say were attracted to were creatures the same reason were attracted to most fantasy pretexts, Because it's an escape from the contstraints of reality, where anything can happen, and people can be feel important.

Lycantropes are made up to entertain of fear people for starters, but i think humans are the dominant species of the planet because of their knowledge, not their wisdom. So to get back at your theory. A Lycantrope is actually a super-human, like a dream of a nerd becoming superman. Maybe someday we design a potion for superstrength of to become a Lycan.

Personally I believe that the allure of the whole werewolf thing is a way for us the human race(A group of us anyway), is a desperate attempt reconect with nature, as it is we aren't quite the nature lovers we used to be as a society, more people seem to flock to the cities rather than to be content living out in the country.
As much as many want such a thing as werewolves to exist the chances of it aren't all that promising, but you never really know, do you.

What I want to know is why the wolf. If we are trying to reconect with nature why not somthing more closely related to us like monkey.not saying there is anything wrong with wolves I am a wolf lover my self but why. it has bin proven that we are very closely realted to the monkey genetickly. So if what yoursaying is true then why the wolf. again not forgeting I love wolves as much as the next person.

I think the wolf because, when we were more of the hunter-gatherer type, we had a closer relationship with wolves, although not always a good one. I think that something has been left in our minds, maybe subconsciously, that the wolf is a symbol of freedom, strength, power and speed. Bascially, I think that most humans somehow believe the wolf to be the perfect hunter (or as close to it as can be seen easily). And because we used to be hunters, we would naturally aspire to be the best hunter, to survive.
I hope that made sense to other people, besides me.

It made sense. I can't say no more then everyone else has. Sorry. Though I do believe in "weres". I am trying to find more research on other types and how they came to be. I only know stuff about wolf side of it really. That is only because for some odd reason they are the most popular. I must say though they are not the strongest. There is stronger "weres" out there. Even though I like the wolf more then any of the other "weres".

People like them because it gives them a reason to post messages at Werewolf.com. :P
Actually, to be honest, I think the said were-creature obsession, stems down to the simple fact that they personify in physical/tangible terms, the conflict that dwells within us all. In short, biologically we are animals. Even so, we like to adhere to a more logical way of thinking, yet even in the most logical and rathional states of mind, we find that we still have instincts and retain traits of which we share with even the most primative mammal species.
Why wolves over apes... Um... Wolves are WAY cooler than apes. :D

I actually wrote an essay on this topic a couple of years ago. My theory was that we get tired of the responsiblity that our current society and lifestyle imposes on us. Animals, on the other hand, sleep a lot and have no comparable responsiblities. However, they have to catch their own food, find their own shelter, and generally have to fight to survive every day. Also they do not have the same intellectual capabilities as us humans. So, we don't want to always have the responsiblities we are given, but we don't want to be fighting for our lives every day. The idea that someone could escape from their daily responsibilities at will and yet retain a human mental capacity is rather appealing. Werecreatures have the best of both worlds, which is why we are so attracted to them.

Whilst that might be the case to you, Majoritivly speaking people don't like wolves, Let alone see them as the perfect hunter, They are, or at least were, considered pests, nothing more. Hence why they no longer flourish in this country, They were all hunted.

I would have to agree to the best of both worlds idea. Not to mention that it would be pretty cool to be able to shift back and forth. Also I agree with the fact that they were kind of model hunters for earlier man because they were the only hunters that man could really get close enough to observe. Personally I would love to be able to shift like that have the best of both worlds and be able to get away from it all when the need be.

Maybe we just like them because they don't seem like they could be real, but we believe in them, or wish we could. Just like why any one is drawn to any other fantasy creature that may or may not exist.
I think that made sense. I'm not so sure myself that it made sense to me... :D

well in the past it was just superstision and people making things up for happenings they couldnt explain or just didnt wanted to believe the truth.
nowadays its people that are fascinated by the idea of it. like writing storys about it or other like discussing it in hypothetical situations.
sure i find it cool too.
thats my opinion anyway.........

Personally, I’m attracted to were-creatures because of their animal instincts…as an example, tigers are super strong and stealthy, and that’s the exact characteristics that I’d like to see in a were tiger, in a much greater scale though….in a werewolf, I like the strength and speed, moreover the aggression…they have their animal instincts in a much superior scale, and that’s what attracts me to them :D

I agree wholeheartedly. Reducing the constraints and social boundaries of society to nothingness and taking on the form of what you percieve the symbol of the Beast Within to be.
I'd also like to add that it is self exploratory in its way. When you reduce society to a nonexistant influence in your mind, you are left with the thing central to your life: The Self. It helps you get past society's needs and wants and more accurately aware of YOUR needs and wants.

Interesting question, why do we like weres?
For me, it is the idea of being an animal. I love animals a great deal (in a platonic kind of way you pervs :) ) I think becoming that animal would be awesome. My idea of a were (soon to be seen in my upcoming novel) is that of a large wolf with human rationale. The increased senses would be amazing, the lack of human responsibility would be pretty cool too.
Being in touch with nature and spirituality seems easier as an animal.
I should add that in my novel, not all werewolves are the docile looking large wolf creatures...it is where you take that power that determines your form.

Well, I am late but I must say i am lost. Both side are totally persuasive. But In my personal opinion, whitch may not be heard,i think there has to be more than just logic. It may not be on this ground but we have endless universe to oppose against. I say, there has to be something.

Speaking for myself (don't know about everyone else) I am drawn to werecreatures (mainly werewolves) because I have always been the oddball, the outsider. And I liked it. Being a were creature would make me more different than ever, and I could be free of law and order, and do things my way for once. I mean, for example:-
Human Form-
Running along school corridor. Teacher spots you. You get a detention.
Werewolf Form-
Running along school corridor. Teacher spots you. Teacher runs away screaming. Optional shredding of teacher.
I'd so love to be a werewolf.

I am drawn to were-creatures because the idea of a melding between human and animal is awesome... endless possibilities.
Not to mention (and I have never realized this before) I seem to be drawn to what is scary anyways... were-creature or not.
Horror books, movies, etc. I don't ever get scared by such things (I laugh my *ss off when people get killed in movies. Especially Final Destination)... usually I'm deeply intrigued.

Why am I so drawn to were-creatures? Maybe I'm just self centered. (smirks)
Why are people so into were-creatures? I think because:
1. People admire appearances and abilities they see in animals they do not possess but would like to.
2. People lust for power, revenge, forbidden desires etc. that they believe as a were-creature they could have and be less likely to face some negative for perhaps.
3.Some people have a low self image and wish to escape theirself for something they see as a better them.
4. People feel strongly connected to animals and nature sometimes and long to feel some ultimate connection, or have an outward expression of what they feel.
5. People need a symbol for their latent primal nature and were-creature fits the bill.
6. Some people may be werewolves but not aware of it except for the fact they are fascinated by were-creature stuff?
7. Some people are into beastiality and find a humanoid beast-person an attractive image.
8. Some people long to find something special and unique in the world, i.e. paranormal and think werewolves would be neat to be real.
9. Were-creatures make for killer entertainment and people likea deh entertainments.
10. Werewolves have a fascinating and long history that is addictive to some people upon discovery.
11. Spiritual reasons or religious reasons.
12. I think sometimes people wish there was a natural predator to regulate people besides people themselves, and so they create in their mind what such a predator might be like a were-creature.
My brain is spent, but really I think there is a zillion reasons why people are into them.

I find the idea of beastiality repulsive, but would it be beastiality if two werewolves were to 'mate' in their animal forms?

I don't think if a human had sex with a werebeast, or 2 werebeasts had sex together it would be beastiality with how it is currently defined under law. It'd make a great court arguement! "But really judge, I didn't know they where part canine, I just thought they where unusually hairy!"

"perhaps it is not the wolf we fear, but the animal in ourselves" -unknown
replacing fear with admiration, i think our own instincts and ancestry plays a major part in our appreciation of were creatures and totem animals.
there is a fundamental connection between animals and humans, the word animal in itself is one of these connections, for those of you like me who believe we are animals.
i think our species' introversion and self worhsip also plays apart, we regard ourselves as something so much greater than what we are at times; that to balance it out, our subconscious may try to remind us of our roots, our connections and affiliations with the natural world.
