Do you think chess is a sport?
I hear people arguing about it all the time, and I was just wondering what some of your opinions on it were. I myself don’t care if it’s called a sport or not.

A sport, in this sense, still has multiple definitions:
1. A competitive game revolving around an athletic activity.
2. A pasttime, hobby or recreation. Id est something you do for relaxation and enjoyment.
3. Something subject to chance.

There are other definitions but those aren't relevant.
Chess only fits the second one listed above. By definition it can be considered a sport. Chess is done for relaxation and enjoyment and can also be played competitively. Since the sport definition, as a whole, doesn't focus on it being athletic then yes, chess is a sport.
Snooker is also recognised as a sport, as are darts, but neither of these are athletic either. I don't see why anybody can say it's not a sport, since it fits the requirements of being one.
If curling and cheerleading are sports, so is chess. /argument.

It's a sport.
Instead of using your atheltic abilities, you're using your wits and foresight.

And a good right hook.Funnily enough, I see a good boxing match as equivalent to a high–speed chess match: tactically picking your moves, ‘taking’ your pieces with each punch you land, and suchlike. Numerous commentators refer to this too, though it seems more of a derogatory description when they use it
I enjoy chess. I haven’t played it in years now. I used to play chess for my school chess club when about 10 years old. I wish I’d never given it up… :(
