Totem vs. Theriotype?

I am, of course, well aware that the two are quite different, but can be mistaken for one or the other. I know even the wisest, most experienced among us seem to sometimes confuze the two, and later realize it, so I am sure this is not an easy question to answer, and I am not sure if it can be answered, really. The question is:

What are the signs that something is a totem, or signs that something is a theriotype? I know that totems are outside of you, while a theriotype IS you, but how can one determine in a more clear sense which is which?

You got one thing right, they are two different things. But to any one the know even the smallest thing about them it's hard to get the two confused. For one, you aren't a Totem, so your question of, "How do you know of your a Totem", is well...... Any way, a Totem is a spirit animal or other naturalistic figure that is that watches over you or a group of people.
Now therians I don't know to much about but from what I know it a person that believe there soul is that of a animal. So in conclusion, Totem are a spirit that has nothing to do with your soul, while Therianthropy is a part of you soul.

I not trying to be rude or judging, you assume I am and it makes an Ass out of u and me. I just misread your post at first, it happens. But lets try this again, okay. From my understanding, an easy way one can tell the difference is that a Totem may appear to them as an animal or something, it would talk to you or give you you sign to follow. Therianthope though is part of your soul, you must like inside yourself and make that decision, deep down inside do you feel like your soul is that of an animal, I believe though that it will not appear to you like a totem would though.

Yeah, sorry about that. I guess I get annoyed when people misunderstand me....I really shouldn't, I know.

Anyway, with cicada I just feel kind of a love for them that was immediate....It doesn't feel like a totem...not spiritual like that. I have heard that with therianthropy it feels spiritual as well(correct me if I am wrong) but different than totems. It just doesn't feel like a totem for me...the wolf is my totem, and it feels distinct from the feeling cicada. It confuses me more that if I would have to choose if the connection was outside me or inside me/or what I feel for myself, it would be more inside me or me than anything. Yet it doesn't feel spiritual. It's just a love that makes me always want to be around cicadas.
