View Full Version : What do you think hell is?

If you believe in hell (of course this isn't just limited to believers), what do you imagine it would be like. Do you think that there would be different levels depending on the sin? Does it vary from person to person? Is it the hottest place there is or is it colder than Antarctica? What do you think hell is like?

Hell to me is just the void.
A blank nothingness, and you won't even realize it because there will be life and then... black.
Scary thought.
Which is why I believe in reincarnation, even though I am atheist (hey, atheist just means "doesn't believe in god"... I can still believe in souls). Because it will prolong the period of time 'til the void.
Actually, I believe that all people make their own afterlife... my "religion" (more of a belief system) is complicated... it's pretty much just a jumble of other people's beliefs that I find makes sense.

Okay, in my opinion, and it's a bit strange, every religion is correct. If you believe in God, than God exists, or any other religion, the god(s) of that religion exist, but only for you. You go to heaven if you truly think you belongthere, and you truly believe in it, and you go to hell for those same reasons. But each person's heaven and hell are different. Or if you think that it's were you belong, you go to your own sort of purgatory. Basically, I think thatthe after life is exactly what you believe it to be. Or, there's reincarnation, where if you believe that that's what happensto people, you'll be reincarnated. If you really want to be a ghost, you'll be one, or ifyou don't believe in any ofthat stuff, you'll just be a spirit, wandering around amid the other spirits. Or, if it's what you believe, you're spirit will die with your body.
Anyways, what I was getting at, hell is what you make it be. There's really no exact form, and the devil only exists if you think he does.

Well, if I didn't (or even if I did), you've just found someone who believes the same thing.

I don't believe in hell but if there is one I don't think it's all fire and brimstone. I think hell is dependant upon the sinner. Each person has their own secret version of hell but I think the best way of punishing the damned would be to make them re-live their sins over and over, replaying their crimes over and over, until they realized why they were wrong and what the sin was and learned not to repeat it again. Then send them back to Earth and see if they learned anything.

I wouldn't mind reliving some of my "sins." :beerchug: :buttrock:
Well, Biblically defined, Hell is separation from God, which doesn't sound that bad at all. Darkness and the sound of gnashing teeth.
But personal torture? I don't know of any real torture that would last for eternity that would continue to bother me forever.

Change it to Pitt of Pen, and combine that with the fact that I said that I lived in the Eastern states. What does that information tell you: Pittsburgh of Pennsylvania. I thought that it was quite simple even without the "Eastern states" thing. Though, Pittsburgh can seem like hell at times.:D

I agree to an extent with LV, but the whole sin thing ah, I have different views on what "sinning" is. I believe hell is your worst nightmare come true, all the things you hate and all that pains you, you relive over and over again. Like for me, watching the people I love die horrible deaths over and over again and not being able to save them would be my hell. That is what I believe.

Some people are all for the fire and brimstone. They take the Hollywood version and the Lake of fire over everything else. One person wanted to be reincarnated as a demon. I don't think that there are any demons being born in hell, but... I have weird friends.
My definition? I ask people, what is the worst thing you think could happen to you. I think that this happens, but times infinite.

I dont know what hell is but it isn't good, that much is for sure.
I like to refference, once again, one of my favorite shows, the Twillight Zone.
A particular episode depicted a bank robber being killed, and upon his death he is greeted by a man who looks like Richard Attenbourough in a white suit with a black tie. He soon finds that anything he wants can be his, all he has to do is ask the man. The man takes him to a strange house, where he will be alone 'in his own little world' forever. He can have other people, but they will be total servants of his.
So after a month of non-stop gambling, prostitutes, and drinking, he decides he's bored. But he can't sleep. He asks the man to let him leave his place, but the man tells him he is not alive and cannot leave.
The man tells him that he thinks this place sucks, if it's supposed to be heaven, but the man in white says
"Whoever said anything about heaven?"
Then he starts to laugh nonstop, and the man realizes he is in hell: a place where he must suffer through all that he enjoys most, as a human, for eternity...

That's an interesting thought... where exactly do you suppose demons actually come from?
I know it's off topic... but... are they fallen angels, incredibly evil dead people, a manifestation of hatred?
The list could go on and on...

Well, West didn't seem to get it. The best quality about Pittsburgh is the that there is an entire community supported by a chain of hospitals owned by UPMC (University of Pittsburgh's Medical Center). The worst quality is all of the road problems, from water main breaks to the country's biggest collection of pot holes, to fixing up every bridge all at once, which is taking years each. So, yes, it can be hell at times (like during rush hour).:D

Every city has a place you can call hell, or conditions that are hell-like (not to mention every city has rush hour).
I know that where I live is hell-like in some qualities...

Hell is basically a big rave party where all the cool people go when they die. Besides, everyone is going there, the catholics, the protestants, the jews, the methodists (maybe not the buddhists), the hindus, the muslims. You know how I know? Because the protestants say the catholics are going to hell, and the catholics say the protestants are going to hell, and they both say the jews are going to hell and the jews say the hindus and muslims are going to hell and the muslims say the christians are going to hell. So everyone must be going to hell.

Oh wait, I've never told anyone except for a good friend of mine that they were going to Hell, and I was joking... I just so happen to be a protestant.
As for cool people going there, I hope you really like Jack Nickelson. I know he'll be there. In make up... forever... laughing and being creepy... looking hideous...even after death....

That's funny, in the christian religion, I though only god could condem people to hell, things sure have changed in christianity, It keeps looking more and more like satanism!

You're interpreting something that hasn't been said.
I said that I hadn't told anyone they were going to hell, which was meant to contradict what you said about all protestants and muslims and catholics and so forth thinking of eachother as hell-bound.

Hell?
I think it's a fairy tale, not unlike Santa Claus, the Sidhe, or Communism.
A very effective fairy tale, too.

Nah. Fairy tales are sweet and good to read to your children before they go to bed.
Hell is a horror story. And like all horror stories, I generally regard "hell" as fiction anyway.
Which is why I am more afraid of the blackness of death than the fires of hell: I am not scared by anything that's a lie.

Not all fairy tales and fun and happy. There are quite a few cautionary fairy tales meant to scare children into not doing "bad" things. A good number of those are Christian, too.

A good majority of the scary fairy tales were written in a time when such things weren't really meant to induce horror. (The Grimm's Fairy Tales, for instance.)
And there are fables, myths, and whatnot. They teach morals, and Fairy Tales teach... nothing, really. Not that I can see. Other than the difference between good and evil.

Yes. But fairy tales, btw, are short stories.
The bible is in no way short. Not only that, but it's pretty realistic compared to fairy tales.
It uses real places, real people, real whatever else.
And it actually comes out and tells you what is good and what is bad, rather than give you a story in which all you can gather is, "Oh, so I shouldn't give a girl a poison apple because I'm jealous of her. Now I know."
Not that I believe in the bible.

I hear hell is other people.
Classically, hell is merely a place without god, and many earlier interpretations kept it far removed from the well-known modern idea of fire and burning sulpher. Under that interpretation, one reasonable view would be simply getting what you think you want -- given the tendency of people to create their own hells in this world with that standard, it's not particularly hard to imagine them doing differently later.
Oh, and _grey_, you might want to read the older versions of fairy tales. Before they got Disnified, there was a good deal of murder, torture, and rape all came up.

I've read all of the Grimm's. Is there any more sadistic than that? If so, can you please point them out to me. I like the old fairy tales better.
And, nevertheless, they were meant for children. Which is weird. But as far as I've heard, it's true.
And they weren't meant for horror, only to teach lessons.

Uhm, it is very much like it sounds nowadays in classical myth. The descriptions in the Bible say that it is a place of fire and grinding teeth.
Those descriptions have to be at least as old as the Old Roman Empire.
Hades was different from Hell, however, it is a place where the dead simply wait in the afterlife to be judged and sent to either Tartarus or Elysium. Some souls stayed there forever living shadows of previous lives.
The Greek Hades is much like the Hebrew Sheol.
