What's the weirdest food you've ever had (or remember having?)

Mine would be dog biscuits. My family makes them so one day I got curious and ate one. They tasted so bad.

I'm pretty tame by most standards. The weirdest I had was a bowl of teriyaki covered Chickpeas. It was nummy.

My sister on the other hand... she ate a oreo that had been twisted apart, had added ingredients of ketchup, mayo, relish, mustard, and horseradish. Then whipped cream around it and the top put back on. We tried to give it to mom when I was 14 (my sister was 3). Mom refused so my sister said "I want it!" So dad and I looked at each other and then shrugged and gave it to her. She ate it right up... and asked for another. My sister was weird.

My mother, sister, boyfriend and a few friends eat dog biscuits like they are cookies. Despite being the goob obsessed with wolves and the such I have never ever been able to even hold any kind of pet food close to my face. Hell a lot of canned human food makes me want to wretch.

Since everyone's talking about pet food they tried, there are these type of rabbit treats that are basically like...yogurt candy. They were strawberry and quite delicious.

I have also tried dry dog food; it was like eating gravel.

Human food wise I like to experiment with different combinations of things. I like peanut butter and butter sandwiches. I'm sure I'll die of a heart attack one day...

Peanut Butter, apple, cinnemon, and toaster waffle sandwiches are also good. Yeah...I like peanut butter.

I don't think I could bring myself to eat bugs unless I was starving...

My sister ate a lollypop with a Scorpian in it. She loved it.

Well when I was a kid I apparently ate cat chow. I kind of remember this and remember it was yummy but in my adult years I once again tried it and found it to be quite bland. I've also eaten dog biscuits. I mean it's not like they are made with gross stuff. It's just cornmeal and flour and stuff. They too were rather bland.

I once had fried jellyfish. Tasteless
Cowbrain. Never again.
Sea Urchin: Gross
Eel: gross
mealworm: it didn't taste gross but the psychological effect was disgust.
Pickled Sausage: I liked it better when I was a kid.

Cow tongue... Yeah ... I know...

Not so bad as Mountain oysters (they weren't great, but not entirely bad), or penis itself. I'd post the linky to the penis-eating article from China, but I've lost it.

OTOH, ask a pet store if they sell bully sticks. Those are just dried bull penis, and they make the most awesome chews, even better than rawhide! :p

My local Asian market sells pig stomachs. I'll definitely try those someday.

I'm afraid to ask but I must Neon... did you in fact chewed on dried bull penis? Did you enjoy this Penis Jerky you man-eater? Or was this for your doggie?

You have already admitted you ate Rocky Mountain Oysters... So you can't be to far away from it. :p

Actually, no...'twas for me pup. Maybe if it were prepared in a more palatable way, I'd eat it, but not the chewies. They're really tough, and plus they stink really badly once they get moist; probably a combo of penis and dog-breath.

The duck jerky from Dogswell isn't half bad though. :p

Getting back on topic, weird foods: ANYTHING "meat-less" that's supposed to look, smell and taste like the real thing. Give me meat or give me death! No fake food for me!

OK. my mom is vegitarian (yes, i know, it sux) one time, she sliced up a thing of tofu (which, if cooked right, isn't all that bad, but it cant compare to the real stuff.) but she then put some black sause on it, stuck in in the oven for a couple minutes, and when it came out, it looked and tasted like hardened tar. and yes, i do know what tar tastes like. I was at a party and it was punishment for losing a drinking game, i had to eat a chunk of tar. i was sick for a week after that.

I've got it on good authority from authentic chinese that the only reason they might have possibly eaten a penis is because they're at the bottom of the eco-socionomic food chain. This is not normal situation in China, nor the rest of the world. However, in the worst of circumstances, one might be reduced to using all of the parts available from the animal being utilized as food or usage. One can only hope that out of necessity the Chinese chose a cow weener to feed their dogs from lack of having anything better.

What makes this bull penis so much better? I'm purty sure were I to gnaw on some peener, regardless of where it came from it would offer the same refreshing blend of muscle, blood vessels, and yummy, chewy skin.

Well I've tried:
Bull testicle (Chewy)
A whole napkin (For a bet)
A Daffodil (With hot sauce because I was bored, very nice)
Ash (For a bet. I don't reccomend it)
Onion cookies (From the asian market. Got addicted to them)
Sheep eye (Meh)

Point taken.

But damn if dogs don't love those processed, dried bull peeners, which are actually a lot better for them than rawhide, if not a thousand dollars more expensive.

And, pray tell, why are they better for them? I'm sure you've got the drill down by now, so you know what I expect in return, both in terms of health information and cost/benefit analysis.

Mods, this might stray from the topic, but since he asked, I am obligated to answer.

Rawhide doesn't digest when the dog tears off a chunk and swallows it. No digestion = potential blockage in gut, which can lead to emergency surgery, which can cost a pretty penny. I'd rather spend US$4-6 on proven digestible muscle chews over the course of the dog's life than have to suddenly shell out upwards of US$3,000 at once. And then there are dogs who just do well with rawhide their whole lives. Whether this is by luck or if rawhide actually IS digestible, I am not the authority on that matter. Either way, I would rather be safe than sorry. Along with cost, another downside to the bully sticks is that they do not last as long as the rawhides...power chewers can have a 12-inch chew gone in 30 minutes, while others may take a couple of hours. Rawhide, on the other hand, can last days to weeks.

Rawhide can also have chemicals in it during processing. Thankfully, a lot of US companies don't do this, but the potential is there. And after an experience with rawhide when we first got our dog, I just don't really trust it: he had chewed his rawhide roll to a good soft consistency, and me being young, inquisitive and stupid, I wanted to unroll it to see how much rawhide actually went into making said roll. As I started to unroll it, I saw some jointed legs in it...got creeped out, but kept unrolling, and eventually found the body of some huge spider rolled up in this rawhide chewie. I'm cool around spiders and creepy-crawlies, but not in such a situation as that.

And lastly, because I am stating things that can and have been researched and discussed, I'm obligated to say that there are conflicting views on whether or not rawhide really IS digestible or not (such as 1 (http://www.daneangelnetwork .org/rawhide.htm), 2 (http://www.petplanet.ca/education_articles/nutrition_rawhide.ht ml), 3 (http://www.dogchewsrawhide. com/puppies_rawhide_chew s.htm), 4 (http://www.oes.org/page2/5822~Is_rawhide_safe .html)). Note that anything referred to by the Dingo company (http://www.dingobrand.com/About/AboutUs.aspx) does state a Harvard Medical School study in the JAMVA, but in past searches I have not been able to bring up this particular bit of research. If anyone is interested and wants to try a search, I can provide the issue and year at a later time. You can also note that Dingo Rawhides are made in China, interestingly enough. My views, and the views of many of the people I talk with (dog professionals both online and off) is that it isn't. Collagen and the dense fibrous tissue that makes up skin is really not meant to be eaten anyway, and despite the acidity of a dog's digestive system (http://k9joy.com/RawFoodForDogs/DigestiveSystemExcer pt.pdf), there is little to no nutrient value anyway in rawhide. Muscle chews, in contrast, do add protein to the diet...but in saying this I must also say that they are not a diet in and of themselves. This is the same for other chews such as frozen raw bones or chicken parts. (And yes, animal bones are safe for dogs IF THEY HAVE NOT BEEN COOKED AT HIGH TEMPERATURES which will cause them to splinter and be dangerous for the dog to chew. And yes, raw meat is safe for dogs if it has been cared for properly and not been allowed to spoil or come from inferior livestock.)

I hope this answers your question, and doesn't throw the thread too far off-topic...

EDIT: BoxedCat, upon some thought, feel free to criticize for the extemporaneous Google search for arguments both for and against rawhide. I might put in some real scientific stuff if I can find it, but for the moment, those sources are what I could come up with in the time allotted before the internets (and public computers) closed down.

Let's see... weirdest foods I've eaten..

Escargot
(Not to bad, they tasted like portobello mushrooms. They were cooked in butter and garlic. Much yummy.)

Cow Brain
(Rather much like eating scrambled eggs. Ate it at a friend's house who's parents were from Mexico.)

Raw Steak
(Actually pretty good, kind of sweet and tangy. I ate it once, out of curiosity. Probably not the healthiest thing to eat... what with bacterias and such. I don't think I'll ever do that again.)

That's about it. That was also some time ago. Nowadays I'm a very non-experimental person. I tend to stick to organic foods and healthy stuff.

The key is to make sure it's out of well-raised livestock. I eat raw meat on the occasion, but I always buy it straight from my local butcher who has his own rendering plant behind his shop. He only slaughters local stock too, so I know where everything is coming from, and the quality tends to be better. Never (or at least try to avoid) eat traditional grocery-store meat raw; that's just playing roulette.

If the meat is quality, then I do not worry about bacteria and whatnot. I have actually never gotten sick from raw meat, but then again I've been eating it on the occasion for years, so my system is used to it. And of course, there are some meats that should probably not be eaten raw, even if out of quality stock, like poultry or pork. I prefer to stick to red meat when eating raw, and that's very rare anyway...got to keep my womanly figure and too much beef doesn't help in that regard.

Righto. If the meat is quality material then by all means enjoy it. :) I think I just made a choice a while ago to stick to a diet of mostly raw fruits, raw veggies and lean, cooked meats. I don't think my GI tract much cares for anything else as it tends to protest when I put something in it I shouldn't. Hell, I don't even drink caffeine. :p

Thinking about it and seeing how some people posted up weird food expeiments they tried. I have the following.

I've done it, but I cooked my hot dog before I put it into the twinkie. Not sure if I could stomach this again though...
