Many people have a condition called 'Night Terrors'. It mostly consists of having vivid and terrifying dreams that mostly can't be remembered. The person having the terror sometimes moves around and makes noises while sleeping. Sometimes they will wake up with their heart pounding, but no idea why. When the dreams CAN be remembered, the person is most likely to be fearful of going back to sleep for a while, nervous that the same dream will come back.
I have this condition, and I thought this thread would be an interesting way to tell others of the nightmares and terrors you have experienced.
I don't know if this is common, but in all my dreams, I can feel what's going on. If I pet a cat, I'll feel the fur. If I get stabbed I feel the pain. Many a night have I woken my family from screams of pain. But sometimes when I wake up, it still hurts, but I can't remember why.
I would like this to be where you can post the nightmares you CAN remember. I will do so also. Feel free to discuss the possible meaning of the dreams and other symptoms of 'Night Terrors'.

I had one the other night, one of the worst I've had in years.
I was maybe 10 years older than I am now and married to my current boyfriend (which I do actually hope happens (young love I know)). I was home alone and he was out at his training camp, since he's in the Navy. These 6 or 7 men kicked down the door. They all had guns and they grabbed me and shoved me in a car. They drove me out to some old house and called my husband, telling him to get over to the old house as soon as possible or they would kill me. Well, he did, what husband wouldn't? He showed up and walked through the front door. Three guns were pressed against my head. They laughed at him and me and told him to get on his knees. When he did, one walked up behind him, made him look me in the face, and then shot him execution style. Blood and brain matter went everywhere, even in my face. I screamed and screamed then they let me go. I ran to him and fell on his body, crying. After a few minutes, the men said something then shot me in the back. It took me five minutes to die, and in my dream I feel pain.
I woke up screaming and sweating, still shaking from the pain.

I've been told by my mother that I had a few night terrors when I was a child. She had told me that one of the things about night terrors is that when you wake up you are still partially dreaming. So you may see things from your dream for a few minutes even though you are physically awake with your eyes open.
I went through a phase in high school where I had nightmares fairly often. None of them were night terrors though.
I also can feel and even taste things in my dreams. I can even taste things and detect temperature changes at times. I have never felt pain that was really intense though. It's always more dull than it would actually be in real life.
Have you thought of trying to use lucid dreaming techniques to try and get over your night terrors? I've heard it is a good tool to use in doing so.

It always sounds cooky, but hipnosis works. My brother had a freind who had horrid night mares. The hipnosis made him dream of things like family, his dog, ect. Unfortunately he got hit by a car three weeks later just like in one of his dreams, it was very bizzar.

I've tried hypnosis. It'll help for maybe 3 nights at most, then it all comes back. Thanks though.

You could also try a dream catcher, that work perfectly for me.

I understand fully your condition, Sabe. I have it myself. Though the night terrors have passed, I still have nightmares on occasions. I've tried every cure possible but none of them worked for me. The best thing to do is to go back to the dreams and try to overcome your fears. Remember, in your dreams, you can stop things from happening.
Example, I had a nightmare a few weeks back in which my fiance's ex showed up and had her at gun point. He shot her and then shot me. I revisited the dream a few nights back and tried to change the course the dream took. In the dream, I ended up shooting him nine times and then I jumped on him, as I am a horrid shot and beat him to death. I haven't had that dream again.

Yes but in my dreams, it's like I can barely move. I feel like when I run I'm slowed down and I can't keep my feet on the ground, when I try to move my arms nothing happens. But what's odd is that my actual self, even though I'm sleeping, is moving around and thrashing the way I'm trying to in my dream.

I just had one of my worst nightmares to date. Lets just say in it I saw my 5 best friends laid out on the grass in a row, dead.
From drowning. Excuse my French but it was gods fucking awfull. I'll have a hard time sleeping tonight...
I read a very interesting article in the New York Times several months ago on the subject of dreams.
It said that any dream which is terrible and frightening, but which does not wake the sleeper, is not actually a nightmare, but simply a "bad or scary dream." The article said that this is due to the fact that the subconscious comes up with an "ending" for the dream - some kind of resolution.
A nightmare, by contrast, is a dream so frightening that you wake yourself up. You are unwilling or unable to deal with the cause of your fearfulness, and, unable to reach a conclusive "ending," you awaken by means of escape.

interesting categorization.
does the article mention anything regarding which is more frequent for the average person...scary/bad dreams or nightmares...and the underlying prevalent causes for either?

I woke up when I saw my dead friends, I don't know if that is a conclusion or not but meh. I'm too much of a soppy git, really.

I used to have really bad nightmares all the time. I woud wake up to scared to move or think. At first, it was all emotion, almost sharper and more intense than real life. The I started getting sensation and pain. It got to the point where I didn't sleep, I didn't eat and was completely miserable.
Now though my dreams are almost stories, detailed and vivid, but there no longer all bad. I can still feel pain in dreams, but I hardly ever get hurt anymore. I don't know why they went away, I just don't want it to come back.

I had a nightmare/ scary dream fairly recently (I don't know if it would be catagorized as nightmare or bad dream because it had a conclusion but i also woke up from it.)
So in the dream me and some of my friends had this really weird power where we could turn into either a mermaid or get wings at any time, but the wings could only make you fly some of the time. We were going to this halloween party thing, I think our powers came from the costumes we were wearing, that was at this wearhouse type place designed to be like a castle.
So, we flew to that place while my family drove, because they were there too. When we got there there was a huge crowd and I got seperated from my friends anf family. Then the bad guys in my dream (I don't know why but they were the enemy) were trying to capture me and my friends.
I managed to escape them for the longest and there was just the leader of the bad guys chasing me and I ended up in this garage type place where it was no longer designed like a castle. What I didn't know was that one of the other bad guys was outside, so when I ran out he chased me back in and I his behind this bench thing, but the boss guy was coming closer.
I was really mad at this point because in dreams I can never move or see right, so everything's kind of cloudy and I can never move fast enough. The guy was coming closer and I was tiered of trying to run away, so I grabbed this sharp metal thing and stabbed myself and then cut off my head and woke up.
Apparently that thing that says if you die in your dream then you die in real life isn't true.
But yeah, that was a really creepy dream, and the only time I've died in a dream.
P.s. I love your av demonic monkey, Ichigo is awesome as a hollow.

I never use to be afraid of spiders until last year. I found a 2 brown recluses on my wall last year and eight other (non-poisonous) on my wall. I became afraid to sleep in my bedroom because of the reoccuring spiders. During that same month, I opened the lid to the dumpster and a row of black siders (at least fifteen of them) were crawling down the lid and up my arm. Ever since then, I get random nightmares about spiders and I no longer find them fascinating. :(

Rele, I've had to do stuff like that before. I feel pain in my dreams and I know it. So many times I've actually killed myself in the dream to avoid the torture. It's pretty twisted and my dad thinks I need mental help but...it works, it wakes me up.

Okay, so I've had two really scary dreams this week. One of them wouldn't be scary to most people I guess, but it was scary for me. I think the stress of this huge English project I have must be causing me to have bad dreams, because usually I rarely have them.
Okay, so I don't know why, but I'm really afraid of being lost and being late and that's what my one bad dream was about. I was at school, but it wasn't the same as my regular school, so after lunch I was trying to go to biology but I couldn't find the classroom. I kept running into dead ends and when ever I would ask a teacher they would tell me the wrong way to go. The bell rang so I got all freaked out, and then I still couldn't find it. And yeah, it was three minutes after the bell rang and I saw my brother and his girlfriend and I asked them where my class was and they didn't know. I was wandering around the halls for ages and then I woke up. It doesn't sound scary, I know, but it really was.
The other one would probably be more frightening. Okay, so I was going to have a birthday party, but I couldn't figure out what to do, so I decided to just have a huge party because my house just happened to have a huge pool and patio thing. But at the party this girl was going off the diving board and then something happened and it completely tore out her eyes somehow. Everyone was freaking out and they all left. I didn't know what to do, so it was just me and my brother left and we decided to just ignore her even though she needed an ambulance and medical attention. Then when my parents got home we didn't mention it, even though I was really freaked out and I knew that she was still in the pool and her eyes were completely ruined and there was blood everywhere.
Yeah, it was really scary. I blame that one partly on Happy Tree Friends. Stupid Eye Candy episode... But it was seriously scary. *shudders* It's hard to describe, especcially since that was a few days ago and dreams always get less and less clear.
