Unless Bush keeps himself out of it.

Doesn't matter.

Betcha he won't. Not much oil in those Eastern European countries, and they always fight each other.

For world war three think China versus USA

There actually is a lot of oil, albeit mostly in pipelines. That only makes it more valuable, and is probably one of the bigger reasons that Russia kept its interests and its fingers in the pie. Most of the interest was probably more logistical and political, though.

Odd stuff. Held the weekend news and might keep the OpEd writers set for a few more days, but it seems more a test than anything large.

Errr No actually he wouldn't unless it some how involved his interests and I have to say eastern european countries wiping one another out does not earn him money or affect him really.

There is no need to be paranoid over any of this.

Earn him money, probably not, but since we DO recognize and support Georgia as an autonomous state, but do NOT recognize Ossetia as such, yeah it probably DOES affect him him in the sense that it probably doesn't look good to have Russian tanks steamrolling through an area that they have no business in.

Also, getting involved in foreign wars is kind of what we DO.

FTFA
In Washington, Rice summoned Cold War imagery to denounce Russian actions.

Rice said: "This is not 1968 and the invasion of Czechoslovakia where Russia can threaten a neighbor, occupy a capital, overthrow a government and get away with it. Things have changed."
...
The U.S. actions came on a day when Russian troops demonstrated that they could go anywhere they wanted in Georgia, and that no one could stop them.

Anyone else having a chilling sense of deja vu?

Yeah, I know it's humanitarian aid rather than military, but if this keeps up, there'll come a time when we'll be following around the Russian army, cleaning up after them. There has to be some debate going on behind closed doors about the reality of sending in troops.

Job security, Ender. You said it :)

Can't remember what comic said this, but I agreed with them: I always figured World War 5 would have lasers and jetpacks, not idiots over oil.

Russia (and correct me if I'm wrong, I often am concerning politics) has been in something of a trend toward its older ways. Not exactly in the line of starting a new Soviet Union. But its not entirely impossible that they would try it.

A while back, someone defined the Cold War as WWIII, and I'm not sure that's an inappropriate label.

Russia (and correct me if I'm wrong, I often am concerning politics) has been in something of a trend toward its older ways. Not exactly in the line of starting a new Soviet Union. But its not entirely impossible that they would try it.

Russia is definitely trying to recreate the USSR. There have been a number of KGB-like maneuvers lately, including disappearing Russian journalists.

Inaccurate thought it may be, he's got a point about something.

And just because it's somewhat on topic (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/kmfdm/wwiii.html).

/sorry, nothing really intellectual to add to the thread

I watched on the news today that three humanitarian workers were killed today by Georgian officers. The officers drew their guns and pointed it at camera crews, telling them to back off, stealing their vehicle as well.
A woman narrowly escaped death as a bullet grazed her arm.

Dude, it was on the internet, too.

I'm personally wondering how long it's going to be before we start having arguments with Russia..

"Now, now, Russia, what are we doing?"

"What? I'm not doing anything! What are you talking about?" *hides tanks and secret agendas behind its back.

"What do you have behind your back?"

"Oh, nothing..." Russia whispers to start controlling the media ASAP to make Operation Takeover II more of a success than Operation Takeover I.

"We heard that, Russia! Play nice, or we'll beat you."

"Bloody hell, we've not done anything yet!" *mutters about bombing a neighboring country shouldn't be our concern anyway, seeing as how we're on the other side of the friggin' ocean...

And so on and so forth...

my dry attempt at humor.

So two DAYS after the cease-fire/withdrawal agreement is signed, Russian troops are STILL in Georgian territory. They just aren't shooting things (i.e. people and buildings) anymore.

Anybody ever play Age of Empires?

There was a silly little way of cheating that you would think would NEVER work in the real world, but sometimes worked in this game. What you did was, you made peace with your enemy, by sending food or whatever over. Then you moved your troops in, and then declared war again.

And then you annihilated them.

But no nobody would EVER try that in real life....much less believe it if someone tried it on them...

Uhh, I'm pretty sure there's a higher likelyhood of Russia invading one of its former states than there is of the South Rising again. That is probably the worst analogy ever for this situation.

Also, Putin is a pretty scary motherfucker, and does NOT take shit from anyone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wB9ZQ5doRi8) .

And last I heard Russia wasn't too happy with our plans for the missle-defense system in Poland.

There is a lot to worry about from Russia.

Russia has the nuke and has had it for years. If we piss them off enough they may use it. Either way if we piss them off we will have a war on our hands and with our troops deployed all over the MiddleEast better hope we don't bite off more than we can chew.

We got nukes too. And we'll do the same thing if they piss us of, I bet.

Thus the start of World war.... what number are we on now?

I don't think that the leaders of all the nations are stupid enough to start nuking the hell out of each other, for the simple fact that it will get around to their country in the end...

Japan was small, and let's face it, we're the only country to have (technically) nuked another country. What would happen if a bigger country got nuked? It would affect the entire world, not only politically or militarily, but ecologically as well.

Side note, and a bit on the cynical side, I'm surprised at some of the people talking nukes... they are always afraid that the big cities will be hit first. Why not something natural? I mean, hit an earthquake zone or a semi- dormant caldera, if you wanna cause massive damage... simply because if you are going to use a friggin' nuke anyways, you know what kind of hell you're unleashing, so why not go all out? End of the World and Last One Standing and all that jazz. (I am sooo going to get hated on for that.)

Thus the start of World war.... what number are we on now?

I'd say at least 6 or 7 by now. :D

I don't think that the leaders of all the nations are stupid enough to start nuking the hell out of each other, for the simple fact that it will get around to their country in the end...

Well, once we bomb Japan, they can get their allie who could be bigger than us in size/geographical land area to bomb us. And it goes on....

Japan was small, and let's face it, we're the only country to have (technically) nuked another country. What would happen if a bigger country got nuked? It would affect the entire world, not only politically or militarily, but ecologically as well.

Oh, you're damn right about that. It would make us mutants one day, from all the poison and we would be like the mutants on The Hills Have Eyes. I totally agree with you.

Well, why not shoot a nuke down a fault line and cause extremely horrible damage? (computers will take over now... *evil grin*) I think the natural stuff isn't that bad compared to man-made disasters, because we (some of us all over the world, others don't) respect the environment enough to give a damn and actually see what we as humans have done to the earth. I mean, recycling is easy as hell, and still I know a bunch of people that don't recycle. You can't get 'em all to do some good sometimes...

Galliard
08-25-2008, 09:39 PM
Missing my point; it's more along the lines of

1) We already HAVE nuked someone, so let's not do it again.

2) If we did nuke natural faults and things like that, we would be flinging stones at each other during the next war. There would be no more technology.

3) Not so much mutation, although that will be a side effect, but the fact we couldn't drink the water, eat food, or breathe without being subjected to horrendous biohazards that will kill us after extensive nuking.

Also, there's the possibility that we'd destroy the planet completely.

I don't know where you got the recycling thing from.

archenemyfan
08-25-2008, 09:46 PM
Basically I'm trying to say that we will kill ourselves off somehow. I did miss the point, but I do agree with you. We shouldn't get into anything anymore, otherwise, it's war. (!)
When you were talking about hurting the world, ecologically. Recycling does make a difference. I was just pointing it out though.

Russia-Georgia conflict created a big headache for Israel which armed and trained Georgians for years - and now suddenly Russians threaten retaliation by supplying S-300 SAM batteries to Syria. Here is what a prominent Israeli analyst says: http://samsonblinded.org/blog/on-russia-georgia-and-israel.htm
