Try this on to your puzzler.


If meditation is just clearing up your mind and letting it (insert good word here, i like to think of it as wandering), how can you meditate on a specific subject?

One concept is that you should clear your mind of everything that you can except the subject of meditation. Another is that you should accept the wandering and just watch the scenery pass. Another, like BloodWolf said, is simply to clear the mind and focus on anything else.

Meditation, conversely to what many people believe, is not the complete emptiness of the mind. You don't have to zone everything out. What it is is a lack of attachment to any particular thought. You can still think about things, because the mind will be clear and well organized (even if there's stuff still in there).

When I meditate, I just let the thoughts flow. If I wish to think about something, I will. However, I usually do not think about things in the order I would wish. Mental wandering is a better way to put it. Eventually I get around to whatever it was I wanted to mediate on in the first place.

When we meditate in Karate class, it is just to control our breathing. :shrug:

Well... meditation is not used for your mind to wander, it is used to focus your mind, and ready you for your day. It helps to seek personal truths, and even to focus your Chi..yes I believe in Chi, I have seen way to many people do way to many crazy physical feats to not believe in it...

So over all, meditation should be used to focus yourself (oh and you need to control your breathing to meditate..not the other way around) and to keep yourself in balance.

Quicksilver has it most accurate.

(by the bye, feats in martial arts and impressive stunts resolves more on physics than chi, meditation is used only to give the person more focus on the subject and prevent any natural reflex arcs that may hinder the wanted results of the event)

But yeah, meditation is not used to clear the mind, merely to control it and emotions better. It could be to think deeply on something without attachment to the surroundings or normal everyday thoughts. It allows you to fully realise what is going on and will oftentimes allow you to reflect on your current situation in life helping you to better understand your own ambitions and "path" or goals.

You think on two levels, concious and subconcious. Subconcious thought are automatic responses, and the will to walk or reach for something. Concious is the images and sounds in your head or however method of thinking you do (some hear their own voice, some have minds that show images instead etc or most commonly a mix of both simultaneously) and regarding another person, et cetera. When meditating you do not, and cannot, "fully clear your mind", because the only way to relinquish all concious thought is to be asleep: hence why we sleep it rests the mind more than the body. All you do is detach your mind from focusing on everyday things and thusly gives you easy opportunity to think on specific things or to simply focus on breathing.

BTW, Quicksilver, you do not "need" to control the breathing in order to meditate. Some people can learn to relax their mind regardless of the state of the physical body. So even while panting after running, they can focus on meditating, and yes some DO use a state of meditation in to focus the mind clearly on nothing but their breathing: this IS used in martial arts and will be combined with using the meditative state to control breathing, heart rate, and energy (chi). With experience this can be done during a fight, so even with adrenaline pumping, fists a-flying, and breathing going rapid (to cope with oxygen demands of muscular activity as part of aerobic respiration) a semi-meditative state of mind can still be achieved to think quicker and keep control of emotions, chi, reflexes.

As mentioned in other threads I have weird hobbies: researching things I like including: martial arts, meditation (I once had this huge three-inch thick A4 book about meditation and astral projection, quite insightful so I took a visit to online web pages and libraries for more info) and such as. (no point in listing everything, because I did a lot of research on a lot of things in my own time: when I was younger it was the only way I learnt as the school preferred to beat me up then send me out of class (great learning environment))

If meditation is just letting your mind lose focus, then I do it 5 hours a day during class. And another hour as I walk home... and pretty much all the time really. The only time I’m not 'meditating' is when I'm watching T.V or reading my books.

If it’s mental focus... Then I have never mediated a single second of my life.
