Here's a question for everyone.

Do you think we are chosen long before we are born to have the interests we have today (such as our careers, hobbies, special skills, and talents), or are these interests merely those we randomly choose because of our own liking?

Often enough you hear parents comment that their children get their skills from them. So do you think these traits are passed on to the child from the parents, assigned to us before we are born, or simply learned later on in life?

My opinion on this particular question is that we are created because of our parents, it is logical to believe that we recieve abilities from them as well as physical traits. After all, our hair and eye color are determined by them.

Not all traits however come from our parents because some traits we develope because of pure interest. We may see a musician on television and go "wow, thats what I want to do". But the deeper question is, is that drive really our own desire, or is someone controlling us like little puppets on a string?

On one hand I would like to say no, we choose our own paths, but on another hand I want to say yes, because sometimes it seems we are simply pulled in one direction or another. What's your opinion?

Good question. Complicated answer.

I think that who we are is a combination genetic predisposition and made from our own choices.

Environment is going to play a huge role in determining who a person is. How a child is raised, treated, fed, kept, and such will impact how they see the world, and what reasons they have for making those decisons which define who they are. If they are raised in a war torn country, perhaps see someone close to them die in battle, then they will choose to A)abhor war or B)embrace war. They would choose A if they were submissive and forgiving (traits developed by how they are reared) or B if they were raised to stand up for themselves. (revenge, or avenge)

But then there are just some things we are gifted at. It could be music, art, math, military occupations, etc. The possibilites are endless. Generally, people are pulled in whatever direction their talent lies. Most people find it. Some never do.

To sum up, we do have the power to choose who we are ultimatly, but we are surely influenced by forces outside of our control.

To answer this we must first figure out if our lives and the lives of the people and animals around us are preordained.

This is not something that we can figure out.
not tell we die anyway.

Its all just opinion, and opinions are very simple things.

So im just gonna say no.

Thats all anyone can say really.

......well that or yes.

That's bifurcation Owly :p Someone can always say maybe...;)

In my opinion, nothing is completely predestined, not unless you take into consideration fate. It's all a matter of cause and effect. Genetics can be a major factor in future interests, though in order to go into more detail would require nonexistant understanding of the workings of the Human brain.

The atmosphere and environment in which one grows and learns also plays a large part in the development of interests, perhaps more so than genetics. However, does this mean that just because someone grew up with many dogs will like dogs? Or hate them for the same reason? To answer my own question...not necessarily.

Interests, as well as likes and dislikes, then seem to stem from one's own personal outlook on life, and the beliefs they conclude for themselves.
