Even a man who is pure of heart, and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright.

First of all there are no werewolves here. There are some that believe that they share the spirit of another creature but that doesn't make them a werewolf they are considered Therians. If you want to know more you can check out the Therianthropy Forum. Secondly they don't hunt people. At least the semi-sane ones don't. There are the few that pop up every so often and claim that they are taken by wild bloodlust and track down their neighbors to kill them but they have just been smoking too many pixie stix.

Now as for the marking of a victim with a star, that is not the case. In the movie Wolfman (1941), Larry Talbot, (Lon Chaney Jr.) was marked by the gypsy woman with a mark of a pentacle in the palm of his hand. This was a mark that led her son the werewolf to attack Talbot as he walked through the moor/woods. That attack led to Talbot being bitten and henceforth turning into a werewolf himself at the light of the full moon.

These two elements, the pentacle in the palm and the full moon are hollywood written lore. There are no previous mentionings in any myths or folklore of werewolves about such occurances. The pentacle in the palm was used one more time that I know of and that was in Blood and Chocolate. The young werewolf girl marks her "victim" a boy that she would like to date, by drawing a pentacle in the palm of his hand.
