Is it right that sometimes we lower ourselves just for the acceptance of others?

Right? No. Life? Yes.

I don't think it's right at all. Why should we have to cover ourselves over with something that isn't who we really are? We're simply trying to blend in because thats what society suggests, and even encourages.
Its not right that we have to hide when the person we are is just as good if not better in truth.
This is what I just can't understand about people. You should do something because you want to, not because someone else wants it.
Be proud of individuality!!!

That's why I disassociate myself from society. We don't get along. Besides, why should I wear a mask to please others? What good would it do? You'd just end up with people who aren't like you at all.

I quite agree. Unfortunately some people find it difficult to be an individual. In this day in age the media is trying its best to round everybody up and turn them into sheep. Words dripping with colour and flattery all of which has been created by some fat cat behind a company who wants his brand to fluctuate and make him big bucks. Buy this, its the in thing- Everyone MUST wear Nike or Addidas, Umbro or Caterpilla clothes- Why? Because its fashion. The world wants to be fashionable, because the media say they must. Yeah right, dress in uniform, be a part of the crowd (no thanks). Hey girls wear make-up the guys love it, it makes your ugly face more palatable. But who says your face is ugly? Some ass behind a company who wants to make big bucks. You're getting crows feet around your eyes- Jesus you must use this anti-aging cream. Why? because old age is bad- who says? The media. Suddenly the world is in panic because of its own self consciousness- why? because the media has caused a stampede of fear, fear of not wearing the right clothes, fear that your not buying the products that everyone else is buying, fear that your getting old. Fear that everyone else is looking at you because you don't look right- suddenly your face seems ugly, you have more wrinkles than a shar pei, you can't mingle with the crowd because you are different- Suddenly you feel like the Elephant man. FEAR that is impregnated by advertisment campaigns. Really it's all bollocks. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, clothes are to keep you warm. I am me and I couldn't give a monkeys hairy testicle what anyone thinks of me. I dress as i please, if you find my face offensive look the other way, if you don't like my clothes say so, I won't be insulted, or feel inferior because at the end of the day they are on my back not yours, and I happen to like them. This is how it is to be an individual.

Amen.
Hellcat- Your words were harsh, but ever so true.
Apparently the new fad is Avril shit. Frankly, by all the media, I am insulted. My individuality has been ruined, and I am no longer "myself". I feel like what I was, what I am has been totally changed from the media. Sterotyping hurts, it cuts deep. I've gotten used to being refered to as "gothic" or "Satanist" when these people have no information on either matter. The media, or the fat cows who want to make money, have ruined my immage of where I once was the individual, and now it appears I'm a "trend setter". I've never intended to start trends, and frankly, I cannot stand the fact that people change themselves because other people think it's cool. It certainly isn't right. It's degrading, and meaningless ontop of that. To pretend to like a certain type of music, to dress a certain way, to impress people for a certain amount of time we have, is none other then... STUPID!
I just want to be me, but it seems that now a days, there's no such thing as being "yourself"....

You can, but these days you have to step over the boundaries of 'the norm' to do it. Even then you end up with a title, usually its along the lines of 'weird', and like you say it's only a temporary thing before you are hailed cool by unwanted deciples who follow you around like flies around a cows butt.

People have been poisoned and corrupted by the media and flattered by greed. Just be proud you're not part of that lot. You're unique and that's all that matters.

I think it depends upon what you mean by "lowering" yourself, and the kind of acceptance you seek. What you're asking is just a little too vague, I think.

I think Morgan was implying that some individuals try to be something they are not just so they can be accepted by peers. Nobody can be something they are not, anyone can pretend to be interested in fashion, or guitars, or football, but who would feel comfortable with pretending to be something they are not- by trying to be something you are not is effectively putting yourself (and your own achievements and capabilities) down- thus lowering yourself to fit into someone elses mold. This kind of behaviour usually applies to people with low self esteem. Kinda like a boy wanting to be a carrot. He could paint himself orange and lay still in the vegetable rack for days on end, but could he do it indefinately? He'd get bored of it eventually and follow a different idea- this is what it is like for people who follow the crowd, that's why fashion always changes- (that and the need to change products to keep the cash flowing) people with low self esteem need a follower. In this day in age, its the media that pulls the strings and gets those puppets dancing, the media leads the congo line of individuals with poor self esteem. The funny thing is, these people only have a low self esteem because the media has convinced them that individuality is wrong-this the world is dancing round looking for someone to follow. If you aint following, soon or later you're gonna end up being followed. That's my opinion anyway
