Told this story to Amethyst the other night, she seemed to approve, so I figured I'd post it here too.

I grew up in an area on the very edge of London, well within walking distance of lots of forestland, an area called Epping Forest.
Part of this is an area called High Beech. By day it's a beautiful piece of Oak forest, at night it becomes a place haunted by people who don't want much attention. It is a favourite spot for young couples to go at night and a good portion of people lost their cherries under the boughs of the trees here (myself included I'm slightly embarassed to say).
High Beech has many odd stories surrounding it, mostly ghost sightings, a few other bits, including a mass UFO sighting. But back in 1996, one that seemed to spring up almost overnight and in several different areas at the same time, were sightings of what became known for a time as the High Beech Werewolf.
A friend of mine reported it to me first, he saw it in the headlights of his car, a vaguely human figure, slightly hunched and extremely hairy, it had a loping gait, though it was moving slightly too fast to be a human being moving in such a manner. At first I thought he was talking so much bullshit, until the next day at work (I was working in my parents Saddlery at the time) I overheard a conversation which mentioned exactly the same "creature".
After this, myself and my girlfriend of the time dutifully teamed up with a bunch of other young couples to look out for the creature. Of course this was more a case of "you go over there, we'll go over here and we'll meet up in a few hours or so", than a full on track and search.
This went on for a few nights, but there were no more sightings (I think we were all slightly distracted or something ;) ). Then something happened that put a stop to us going to this place once and for all. A couple (noone I knew) vanished, their car was found abandoned in High Beech. A few days later their bodies were found, and appeared to be partially eaten. The official cause of death was strangulation as I recall, then the police believed a dog had been allowed to eat the bodies, something like that. It's not unknown for mutilated bodies to turn up in High Beech, but this cut too close to home. None of us ever went there at night again.

I just thought I'd share that one.

Sounds freaky, but I would like to think that any other werewolf would have more sense than to go attacking people. But then again there are some strange ones out there!
