According to Catholic Doctrine it is a sin to engage in a divorce.
I think that if people want to marry another human of consenting age that badly, then let them and everyone else needs to get out of their bedroom.
But Catholicism is only a small fraction of all the religions out there. Protestants accept divorce, they don't suggest it, but they do accept it. And whether Catholics say it's a sin or not, it still happens in the U.S. very commonly.
I agree that if two human beings wish to get married, then they should be able to no matter what their gender is. For Christ sake, they let celebrity pets get officially married these days, but they can't let gay people do it?

I think that banning homosexual marraiges is stupid. I mean come on, its not like saying "oh no you cant get married" is gonna make them go away. Its just creating controversy and making it harder for them to file their taxes.
I say let them get married.
Besides, isn't marriagie a basically religious concept? Arent we supposed to keep church and state separate?

I think originally marriage wasn't such a religious event. The Church took over the idea of marriage in about the 10th Century and it's pretty much been the same since. Before I think marriage was more a spiritual thing, about deep meaning and emotion but not a significant part of religion dictated by rules and 'sins'. I'm not too sure about the whole thing but if marriage was around before the concepts and rules of religion then I think it isn't bound by it and should take place.
Personally I think marriage shouldn't be so religious if you don't want it to be. If you have strong religious views then fine, but a lot of people nowadays do not and I would see it more about the bond between two people than with the two people and 'God'.

Actually, marriage was originally (at least, by the laws of the ancient Near Eastern and Greco-Roman civilizations) a civil union -- and by that, I mean essentially a contract between the marrying parties -- used primarily for the determination of inheritance. Religious ceremonies for marriage came later.

Divorce may be a sin to Catholics (practicing Catholics at least) but that doesn't mean it should be illegal. The rest of the world, those who think for themselves, know that somethings are necessary and better for those involved. Unlike the all controlling Catholic religion.

Masturbation's a sin, too. Are we going to outlaw that, too? Gawd, I hope not! Then what'll I do with all my free time? ;)
Seriously, we've got this little thing in the US Constitution about not establishing a state religion. If you want the pope to dictate how everything should be run in the country in which you live, you really ought to move to Vatican City.

Get it back on topic people!

I don't really think divorce should be illegal, I just meant that if marriage is as sacred an institution as people say it is, then you would think divorce would be illegal as a result.
