I'm sorry, but in the past I've never paid too much attention to primaries.

Has "Somebody who will get the incumbent president out of office" been an issue in judging a potential candidate before?

Most other presidental elections when the President was up for re-election?
Democrats are supposed to think the same on most issues, so that's never major, and personalities are only slightly easier to fake than issues. If you read into the Republicans, particularly around the military, there was a lot of anti-Clinton voting going on. No idea how Gore got up there, but they wanted someone who could be Bill.
