Dear Senator Kerry:

Since it has become clear that you will probably be the Democratic
nominee for President, I have spent a great deal of time researching
your war record and your record as a professional politician. The reason is
simple, you aspire to be the Commander in Chief who would lead my sons
and their fellow soldiers in time of war. I simply wanted to know if you
possess the necessary qualifications to be trusted in that respect.

You see, I belong to a family of proud U.S. veterans. I was a
Captain in the Army Reserve, my father was a decorated Lieutenant in
World War II; and I have four sons who have either served, or are
currently serving in the military. The oldest is an Army Lieutenant still on
active duty in Afghanistan after already being honored for his service in Iraq.
The youngest is an E-4 with the military police. His National Guard unit
just finished their second tour of active duty, including six months in
Guantanamo Bay. My two other sons have served in the national guard and
the navy.

In looking at your record I found myself comparing it not only to
that of my father and my sons, but to the people they served with. My
father served with the 87th Chemical Mortar Battalion in Europe. They
landed on Utah Beach and fought for 317 straight days including the
Cherbourg Peninsula, Aachen, the Hurtgen Forest, and the Battle of the
Bulge. You earned a Silver Star in Vietnam for chasing down and
finishing off a wounded and retreating enemy soldier. My father won a Bronze Star
for single handedly charging and knocking out a German machine gun nest
that had his men pinned down. You received three purple hearts for what
appears to be three minor scratches. In fact you only missed a combined
total of two days of duty for these wounds. The men of my father's unit, the
87th, had to be admonished by their commanding officer because: "It has been
brought to our attention that some men are covering up wounds and
refusing medical attention for fear of being evacuated an be permanently
separated from this organization..." It was also a common problem for
seriously wounded soldiers to go AWOL from hospitals in order to rejoin
their units. You used your three purple hearts to leave Vietnam early.

My oldest boy came home from Iraq with numerous commendations
and then proceeded to volunteer to go to Afghanistan and from there back
to Iraq again. My sons and father have never had anything but the highest
regard and respect for their fellow soldiers. Yet, you came home to
publicly charge your fellow fighting men with being war criminals and to
urge their defeat by the enemy. You even wrote a book that had a cover
which mocked the heroism of the U.S. Marines who raised the flag on Iwo
Jima. Our current crop of soldiers has a philosophy that no one gets
left behind; and they have practiced that from Somalia to the battlefields of
the Middle East. Yet as chairman of a Senate committee looking into
allegations that many of your fellow servicemen had been left behind as
prisoners in Vietnam, you chose to defend the brutal Vietnamese regime.
You even went so far as to refer to the families of the POWs and MIAs as
Professional malcontents, conspiracy mongers, con artists, and dime-store
Rambos.

As a Senator you voted against the 1991 Gulf War, and have
repeatedly voted against funds to supply our troops with the best
equipment, and against money to improve our intelligence capability. I
find this particularly ironic since as a Presidential candidate you are
highly critical of our pre-war intelligence in Iraq. However, you did vote to
authorize the President to go to war, but have since proceeded to do
everything you can to undermine the efforts of our government and our
troops to win. Is this what our fighting men and women can expect of you
if you are their Commander in Chief? Will you gladly send them to war,
only to then aid the enemy by undermining the morale of our troops and
cutting off the weapons they need to win?

Our country is at war Senator, and as has been the case in every
war since the American Revolution, a member of my family is serving
their country during the war. Now you want me to trust you to lead my sons in
this fight.

Sorry Senator, but when I compare your record to those who have
fought and died for this nation, and are currently fighting and
dying, the answer is not just no, but Hell No!

Sincerely,
Michael Connelly, February 14 2004 Dallas, Texas

And when compared to Bush's record, at least Kerry was there, Bush was MIA.

Okay, to begin: A comparision of Kerry's vs Bush's military records (http://www.awolbush.com/kerry-vs-bush.asp) (mostly PDFs)

Now, a brief version of Kerry's record, since it would seem that the person who wrote this letter didn't actually research it at all. "Scratches" my ass.

First tour of duty

After an application for a twelve month deferment to study in Paris was denied, Kerry joined the United States Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy) on February 18 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_18), 1966 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966). He was ordered into active duty on October 19 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_19), and received his Navy commission on December 16 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_16). After completing a year of training, in December 1967 he began his first tour of duty, serving as a Second Lieutenant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Lieutenant) in the electrical department on the guided-missile frigate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frigate) USS Gridley (DLG-21) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Gridley_%28DLG-21%29).

In February 1968, the Gridley sailed into war to support aircraft carriers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_carrier) in the Gulf of Tonkin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Tonkin), but was far removed from combat. Kerry had no contact with the enemy during that time. His ship returned to port in Long Beach, California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Beach%2C_Califo rnia) on June 6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_6), 1968 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968).

Second tour of duty

Initially, Kerry had hoped to keep a relatively safe distance from most of the fighting by obtaining an assignment as commander of a Swift Boat (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Swi ft_Boat&action=edit). He commanded his Swift Boat Patrol Craft Fast-94 during several operations, including Operation Sea Lords (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Ope ration_Sea_Lords&action=edit) (raids on the NLF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Front_for_t he_Liberation_of_Vie tnam)-controlled Cua Long River in the Mekong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mekong) Delta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_delta) near the Cą Mau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_of_Vietnam ) province), and proved an aggressive commander.

Kerry lost five friends in war, including Pershing, who was killed in action (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KIA) on February 17 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_17), 1968. The death had a devastating impact on Kerry, who expressed his grief in a letter to his parents.

Combat medals

Kerry was awarded his first Purple Heart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Heart) for an injury incurred during his first combat experience (on December 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_2), 1968). He was treated for a small piece of shrapnel in his arm and he immediately returned to duty. On February 20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_20), 1969 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969), he earned a second Purple Heart when his left thigh was hit with shrapnel and, again, he was treated and returned to duty. Eight days later, on February 28 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_28), 1969 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969), Kerry's boat was hit by a B-40 rocket (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=B-40_rocket&action=edit). After beaching his boat, Kerry chased down and killed a wounded National Liberation Front (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Front_for_t he_Liberation_of_Vie tnam) guerilla, who had been shot in the leg by a crew-mate and was fleeing with another B-40 rocket. Kerry came back to the boat with the rocket and launcher. He was awarded the Silver Star (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Star) medal for his actions. On March 13 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_13), 1969 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969), Kerry's boat detonated a mine (as his position took heavy fire) and his arm was wounded. For his injury and rescuing U.S. Army Green Beret James Rassmann (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Rassmann) on the same occasion, Kerry was awarded a third Purple Heart and the Bronze Star (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronze_Star) with Combat V (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronze_Star#V_device ). The last of his three injuries included a bruised arm and shrapnel in his posterior which, according to Kerry, cost him about two days of active service.

Due to questions regarding the nature of his wounds, the Kerry Campaign released his military records. These show second citations for a Silver Star and a Bronze Star were issued by John F. Lehman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Lehman), who was Secretary of the Navy eleven years after Kerry's service.

Swift Boat Veterans Issue Cease and Desist Letter to Senator John Kerry's Campaign
Tuesday June 1, 5:07 pm ET
Letter Issued to the General Counsel Promising Legal Action

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, a group of eleven Swift Boat veterans from the unit in which Senator John Kerry served issued a letter for the Kerry campaign to cease and desist the unauthorized use of a photograph in which they appear.

Supported by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the sailors in this photograph demand that the blatant abuse of their images by the Kerry campaign cease immediately. Today's letter warning legal action follows a letter sent to Kerry headquarters on May 17, 2004 alerting the campaign of these complaints. The signers of today's letter object to the use of their photographs in conjunction with the Kerry campaign because they believe that not only is Kerry unfit to serve as the commander-in-chief of the United States, but by using their images, the campaign suggests that these men endorse the senator.

Of the 20 officers in the photograph only two openly support Senator Kerry. Eleven of the officers in the photo oppose Kerry's bid for the Presidency, four wish to remain uninvolved and two are deceased.

Swift Boat Veteran's for Truth's primary purpose is to shed light on John Kerry's service record. SBVT is not affiliated with any political organization. The group includes more than 220 Swift vets, virtually the entire chain of command Kerry reported to and a large majority of peers who served with him during his short and controversial stay in Vietnam. The group's purpose has struck a cord with the American public with over two million hits recorded on its website http://www.swiftvets.com .

Swift Boat Veterans for Truth is a Special Purpose Political Action Committee.
It is a tax exempt non-partisan public advocacy "527" organization consisting
of, and limited to, former military officers and enlisted men who served in
Vietnam on U.S. Navy Swift Boats or in affiliated commands. Chairman, Rear
Admiral Roy Hoffmann (retired). Treasurer, Weymouth "Wey" Symmes, PO Box

Even the Russian President is getting in on it:

http://www.russiajournal.co m/news/c....shtml?nd=44195 (http://)

Russian President Vladimir Putin stepped into the U.S. political campaign on Thursday, saying the Democrats had "no moral right" to criticize President George W. Bush over Iraq. The Kremlin leader, answering a reporter's question in Sea Island, Georgia, suggested that the Democrats were two-faced in criticizing Bush on Iraq since it had been the Clinton administration that authorized the 1999 bombing of Yugoslavia by U.S. and NATO forces.

The reporter had asked Putin to respond to U.S. press articles questioning Russia's place at the G8 feast of leading industrial countries. Putin brushed these off, saying such articles were part of an internal U.S. political debate.

He went on: "I am deeply convinced that President Bush's political adversaries have no moral right to attack him over Iraq because they did exactly the same. "It suffices to recall Yugoslavia. Now look at them. They don't like what President Bush is doing in Iraq."

Russia was adamantly opposed to the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, as it has been to the U.S.-led military operation Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein. At the same time, Putin forged a strong friendship with Bush by offering immediate support in the global fight against terrorism. Both men go out of their way now to avoid criticizing each other publicly.
