My teacher once brought up an interesting topic in my class. "What are the good and bad points of both Formal Education and Self-Teaching? Which do you prefer?" I loved the questions, so I thought it would be nice to bring it up here. You can post what you think of the two subjects.

First off, here are my preferences:

I believe it's important to have a balance between self-teaching and formal education.

Formal education is completely necesary for anyone to thrive in this world. You must have some level of credentials so that people will be willing to give you work and take you seriously.

I think learning from educated teachers is also quite important. They're giving you the knowledge they've procured over time. You can build on it in any direction you want once you graduate at the level of education of your choice.

I believe self-teaching to be important at any age, but especially once one leaves formal education. With self-teaching, I can pursue topics that, while worthy of my time, are not part of my formal education's curriculum. Often, one can be pulled down by the limitations given to them by their current education. While the limitations are often for the better, I believe there's no harm in overstepping them once outside of school.

I myself get more enjoyment out of Self-Teaching than Formal Education. I can go at whatever pace I want. It's a personal victory each time I learn soemthing new.
