Have you ever started thinking about a topic and it leads into another topic and then yet again to another? I tend to do it alot. Of course I have a lot of time on my hands lately too. But I use to discuss this with an ex-bf, and he would always get mad when a topic would take off of 'Home Base.'

For Instance: I found myself thinking about how pretty the trees and leaves were in the dabbling sunlight on my ride into town. And as I stared off (Being the passenger) I then began thinking about how little things are taken for granted like the little special moments which you treasure for a life time. That lead to a memory of this one winter on a sunny day where I remember sitting at a red light, and watching little sparrows jump around in a bare bush. I also remember thinking then that I was probably the only one to see that on that day. Then it went into how bad my memory seems to be on certain days, an how it bugs me that I can't remember a lot past a dramatic occurance that happened. : and so on and so forth. It started out about trees. It ended about painful memories. Somewhere's in there there's a story about some birds and a moral of simplicity. Then there's the concept of where simplicity often goes un-noticed.

So this got me wondering if anyone else tends to do this, and what exactly they think of it. My ex decided something always had to stay on topic and could never wander, and I like to wander. Maybe that's just me. (Also notice how he is an ex now.)

If I could keep track of my thoughts that easily, I would. But they arn't as pretty as yours.

I've felt like this quite alot. Where you look and consider something, then it strings off into flash backs and old memories are dusted off. Autumn does it to me exspecially. Sometimes I like to see just how many good or bad memories or thoughts go through my mind when I do this. Other times, I write what I think or remember down. Most of my poetry comes from this. IT is not bad, and it is not good. But be wary that sometimes you will do it when you it's not always the best moment for it to happen.

I was driving last night and that happened. My mind just went from focusing on the interstate, to how far could I go if I kept driving? Where all would I go.. what could I see? Then I would start remembering places I had been, the people who were with me, things that happened. Next thing I knew I was 30 miles past my exit.

Glad to know I'm not the only mind drifter in here.

My friends hate the fact I do the same. Then find some logical reason that I was talking about the subject. At the local Vampire Larp, we were talking about Vampires, then I got onto lawyers (their both blood suckers), then politicians (they all lie), ect...

Oh, um, what were we talking about again???? :D

Um...how is this philosophy exactly?

=O.ô= Yeah..

Anyway, I think in some ways her question could be phylisophical. It's a way of ''making you think.'' A way of ''vewing things in ones own perspective.''. Zoning out. Hell I do it.. Easily distratced.. yea...
I'm even a proud paitent of PBS.

Figured since it dealt with the mind and what you were thinking, that it could go here. The Mod can move it if they feel there's a better place for it.

It might as well stay. It can be made to be philosophical and such and it isn't like this forum gets very philosophical threads anyway

As a personal oppinion. I would say its a lack of discipline. No one focuses on any one topic anymore. Once they get uncomfortable, or bored, they jump to another one. Its all about psychological barriers... ah heck, just be awesome to finish a topic for once :beerchug: .

I'm glad to see that people still appreciate the small things in life. I feel that I have just recently learned to notice brief, beautiful moments. They are just simple things, like noticing the fog over the lake while driving to work. Sometimes I see the moon in the sky during the morning, while the sun rises at the same time.
I've learned to appreciate the beauty that would easily go unnoticed if I didn't take the time to just look at them.

Everyone should take a few minutes every now and then to notice the small things and moments of happiness in their lives. I'm not happy-go-lucky all the time, I tend to be rather cynical and sarcastic all the time. But I try to remember there have been some nice moments in my life too, even if it's easier to remember the bad ones.

Umm.. This thread was about mind drifting to other thoughts, but my.. mind drifted! It happens to me a lot, especially when driving. I can think about stuff for a long time and later wonder how I survived home at all, since I don't know if I ran the red lights or hit some pedestrian while driving. I just suddenly notice I'm home and don't know how I drove there. Scary.

My thoughts wander in the same way that DS described. And there is nothing wrong with that, it just means that you have a lot of things to think about! It's a good thing some people still take time just to think about stuff, other than working, eating, sleeping and what's on the TV tonight. The world is too busy place for something like that these days, it seems.

I would agree, wandering thoughts should not be seen as negative. The misuse of wandering questions and they’re numerous offered answers, which is a lack of discipline; or in some cases, a case of laziness. The wandering thoughts should be harnessed and written to memory or into physical existence. This way, every ounce of knowledge we incorporate into our minds can be shared with others in a continual spasm of regurgitated concepts and ideas; which will lead to a revelation of some distinct authoritative statement or, at the least, another knot in the chain of rippling concepts which will continue to bring forth further advances (even if these are trapped to the merely mental realm). –The natural is but a reflection of the spiritual, and vice versa.

Quick riddle: A double-sided mirror with no reflection = ?

We could really do with a Psychology area - although it would become the dumping ground for all "tr00 w3r3" posts with the tag "seek professional help". :p

Back on topic though I find myself I often seem to meander thought wise. The mind is a funny thing, and often doesnt store info alphabetically! We all have unique associative links in our minds. For instance I was shopping this week and ended up thinking about my grandparents, just because I saw a can of tinned ham, and they were the only people I knew who used to eat it. But I bet most people on this site can pass a tin of ham without it bothering them!

I'm always up for a good psychology chat with people, and they all seem to know that. I get a lot who come to me for advice. Although the 'tr00 w3r3' threads do get annoying, I find that sometimes listening to someone else and their problems, you help solve some of your own while trying to help them solve theirs. Doesn't really matter if something stays on topic or not then. Cause as long as you feel a little better and can see a little more in the distance, what's it matter if the topc you started out with isn't the one you ended with? Could be that you found a solution to the first topic and are still thinking on the second.

Psychology is one of those areas we're encouraged to read up on when we go through the whole "I want to be a Wiccan" thing. The problem is psychology is kind of broad in its span - I guess we touch upon it is several forums. But let me be clear that psychology isnt just about crazy people!

I now have Spam on the brain. Weird how things like that get stuck in your head... But that's another topic.
Yes, I do it a lot. Sometimes with people, sometimes alone but whatever it starts as it always leads to something bigger, thats why I like to do it with as many people as possible, they can all add to it in their own way, it's where their mind leads them too. Then you can look back and see how things snowballed into what you have at the end. It's special.

While it is, of course, immensely funny to make off-topics posts considering the topic, please quell your off-topic habits in a different way to keep on topic here.

I feel the same, sometimes my thought wander off. Like I can start a topic about sex, then dumb people, then flowers and so on. lol.
