Silver Bullets play a major role when it comes to killing werewolves.
Some say it's the only way to kill a werewolf and some say cutting off it's head and burning it's heart is enough.
In Underworld they said that Silver Bullets and the moon(the full moon actually) are related.
I didn't quite understand,so if anybody has some really good info on silver bullets and why they're important, then i'd like to know.

 Silver...oy
Ok, this is what I have found about the origins of Silver in use against werewolves. In ancient folklore, silver was used to repel vampires. Back when all the tales started about both werewolves and vampires and all the demons and things that go bump that stalk poor defenseless humans, things mingled. Many things got intertwined and somewhere in the mix, silver became werewolf repellant. It's even been told that if you cut a werewolf 3 times on the forehead with a silver knife, he will be cured. (Ha) Later, with the coming of guns, silver bullets came into being as a way to kill a werewolf. Hollywood picked up on the silver bullet thing very quickly, and PRESTO, we have todays most popular werewolf misconception. (next to "Can you become a werewolf by getting bitten?")

As a side note:

In the view of occult science in general, silver is connected to the moon as gold is with the sun. The metals are associated with the heavenly bodies. So silver is to the nighttime and moon energies as gold is to daytime and sun energies. Thus silver was used by superstitious people to guard against all evils of the nighttime.

Silver, Werewolves, and the Moon

The common myth that silver can kill werewolves stems from the myth that the werewolf's change was activated by the full moon. Silver is considered a "moon" metal. The silver light of the moon caused the change so the silver metal could therefore stop the change. Silver although considered deadly to a werewolf was not instantly fatal. Apparently you needed to pierce the heart or brain with it, otherwise the werewolf could recover from the wound. It is curious to note that some myths say that the werewolf would show all injuries inflicted in their wolfly form when they regained their human guise. Others say that only injuries sustained by silver in their wolfly form can be visible in their human form.

Silver bullets came along at a much later date and although people love the idea of the silver bullet it is not exactly practical. Silver is a soft metal and the force of propelling a pure silver bullet out of a gun would cause the metal to become dedformed and would not pierce as readily as a normal bullet. It is said that some werewolf hunters merely dipped their regular bullets in silver. This wasn't entirely effective but the silver on the bullet could slow a werewolf down long enough for the werewolf hunter to get in a few more immobilizing shots.

Before silver bullets the more common form of inflicting injuries were silver knives, daggers, swords, and clubs. Of course as I said, silver is a soft metal and it is difficult to fashion such weapons entirely out of silver. Most were plated with silver rather than made of pure silver. Any pure silver weapon actually used in a combat situation would be likely to bend or become misshapen.

Although the allergy to silver is mentioned several times I have yet to see a reference to a werewolf actually having a reaction while touching silver except in fiction. No myth or legend has specifically said that the touch of silver upon a werewolf's flesh causes instant pain. Therefore it is conceivable that a werewolf could wear silver and be perfectly fine but if the silver comes in contact with their blood stream the reaction could then occur.

Okay, this is bugging me...

If the moon caused transformations, and silver was connected with the moon, why isn't it considered something that would help a werewelf?

Back in the Dark Ages, silver was a rare metal and the people equated rare with magical. Imagine if that were true, we would have enchanted baseball cards.

Purin: the moon and silver are similar. However, the moon did not help werewolves in myth; it controlled them. Silver does not help; it controls.

GarouX: it causes a reaction in the skin and blood. A chemical related to our healing acts as a catalyst. An acid is produced.

This does not kill immediatly. No matter how bad the wound, an injury to a leg will not kill quickly. But it will stop someone. Of course, if you are will to try the shotgun to the head or magnum to the heart, silver doesn't matter.

I've read myths where the Werewolf could change regardless of the moon phase, but was strengthened when more of it was showing. Wouldn't silver have the inverse effect on these werewolves and help them?

Moon Controles them > Silver Controles them
Moon Helps them > Silver Helps them

Most of the werewoves I know can change any time they want, as long as it is night. I have seen some change even in the day, but this is not something I would do. You could get your self killed doing that. And, no sliver will still hurt them. Now monkshood will make them sick, after they get over the sickness they'll be really strong and pissed off. Wolfbane is a stronger form of monkshood it could kill a full blooded werewolf.

Wolfbane is a stronger form of monkshood it could kill a full blooded werewolf.Monkswood and Wolfsbane are the same thing. Another name the herb goes by is "aconite". Also this herb is very POISONOUS to everybody, werewolf or human. In large doses it can also be fatal.
