Who here knows anything about shamanism?

As i've walked through the world of mysticism, nothing else strikes my cord but good old, Unified shamanism. Whether it be Urban, or Native, it just sings to me. It can go in conjunction with any religion, and in some cultures the practice is healthy.

What do you all think?

I come from a family of Dakota Sioux, and when I was younger I was inside a sweat tent, when my grandmother died. The sweat is supposed to purify your body, and boy does it make you feel better! It is both physical, and spiritual purifications. Anyone know anything else? :wavey:

I ask questions, to answer mine and your own.

have you ever felt as if you yourself could -be- anything? ever felt morte at home withanimals and/or plants, than with human beings? as if you could guess or learn hte secrets they hide from everyone/thing else, if only you could touch their spirits/souls? to be able to do such is but a small fraction of what shamanism is about..... http://shamanism.com/ .....they know how to explain it better than i could. good luck.

I have been trained in the noadhi path of the Sami people(Finnish natives) by my grandfather. It has very strong similarities to Siberian shamanism.

I am not a big proponent of New Age "shamanism". I find it to be be washed out and lacking in many areas. Most of the "shamans" that you find these days practice a New Age based "spiritual" path that is based on guided visualizations and major perennial philosphy...more often gleaned from the oh so money hungry Llewellyn "magick" series.

Whisper--How is this a "Celtic Shamanism" site. From what the site says, it is a Huichol based spriritual site. Also, where did you find the information on the native spiritual practices of the Celtic tribes? I have yet to find a lot of firm documentation of such in any of the available lore. Just curious.

I think that the greatest power of shamanism lays with the fact that a shaman can use any model, any religion, any form of psychology, any mythology. They are not limited to any way of thinking, except the limitations they place upon themselves. In the world of shamanism everything is possible, all is achievable and all is connected. There are no divisions, except those we create.

While I agree with you, it should be pointed out that many New Age "shamans" merely follow those experiences that are given to them by books. I fully urge any full-fleged psychonaut to explore their own microcosmic worldview....not that which is given to them by pompous New Age social workers with a knack for flowery writing. Many today view shamanism as a pacifistic path that is devoted to healing. This is not true. A true shaman is not merely a healer, he/she is a warrior as well. Many shirk the initiatory death rites that take the psychonaut across the Abyss in favor of a preplanned guided visualization. This, in my own and many others' opinions, lead to a false sense of security and weakness of Will. I have worked with many of these types that when the chips were down, they did not have the strength of Will to keep themselves standing upright...muchless protect themselves or heal someone.

My view is that if you wish to claim that you practice something...have the strength to back up your words.

I agree. There are many people that believe in only one half of a duality or one facet of multiplicity. These people find it difficult to see the universal or multidimensional reality. Remember people, there is nothing to fear. Treat everything with respect.
