Hey, all! As some of you know, I'm addicted to fantasy sports. I thought it would be cool to get a fantasy baseball league going with ww.com members, so I set one up on Yahoo. If you're interested in participating, just post here, and I'll PM you with the league ID number and password. The season starts on 3 April, so post now to join!

I should note, however, that participation in the league requires daily activity for roster changes, trade approvals, etc. If you cannot make such a commitment, please do not join. It really sucks when teams aren't active the way they're supposed to be.

I don't know all that much about very many specific baseball players, but I can learn. I'm in.

Wait, so how does this work? I mean, how do you play?

Why the hell not. Haven't paid attention to baseball in years, but, it's something to do.

Wait, so how does this work? I mean, how do you play?

Basically, here's how fantasy baseball works:

Before the season starts, each manager drafts a team. In my league, this is done by pre-ranking the players in the order that you want them (#1 being your top pick). Then, at a preset time, the system runs the draft based on each manager's rankings. Although I would prefer a live draft, this has been found to be impractical, as it's rather difficult to get all the managers online at the same time.

Once the season begins, your fantasy team will be credited with the real-life statistical output of the players on your roster For example, on a given day, if you've got Barry Bonds on your fantasy team, and he goes 2-4 with a homerun and 3 RBI in that day's real game, then your fantasy Barry Bonds goes 2-4 with a homerun and 3 RBI.

Now, the league I'm running is what's called a rotisserie league. This means that there are rankings for each of the stat categories -- for example, homeruns and RBI for batters and wins and ERA for pitchers. You will be ranked in each category (my league has seven categories each for hitters and pitchers). The player with the best aggregate ranking in all categories will then be ranked first over all in the league, and so on.

Now, here's the kicker. This league that I'm running allows you to change your roster everyday. This allows you to make sure your pitchers get all their starts, to make sure that injured guys don't remain in your lineup, and even to avoid bad matchups (for instance, if I don't want my right-handed power hitter to go up against Randy Johnson on a given day, I can sit him just for that day, then activate him then next day if I want). This means that, in order for your team to be competitive, you make modifications to your roster on a daily basis (before the start of each day's real-life games). If you cannot commit to this, DO NOT SIGN UP. Those of us who work on our teams regularly and stick it out for the whole season get very annoyed when people play half-assed and especially if they bail as the season wears on. Signing up for this league means your in from the beginning until the end of the regular season.

/expository mode

Buddha and Reformer, I'll PM you the info you'll need in just a couple of minutes.

Thanks for the information, is there anyother custom rules in your league that we should know about?

So far, there are five teams in the league. Ideally, we really need 10-12 to make it a viable league, so let's get moving, folks! Sign up now!

FYI, if this is successful, I'll be doing a ww.com (American) football league in the fall, too. :D

Oooh dude football league, I will totally do that too, by the way, my team is the Casady Cyclones named after my high school for anybody who was wondering.

Yup, Reformer, just saw that you'd joined. Welcome to the league! :D If we get enough people, this is gonna be SWEET!

Y'know, I tried to get a fantasy English Premiership going last year, but apparently we don't have enough Brits or educated Americans here. ;)

Haha, well if we get enough people to sign up it should get to be pretty fun. I just recently checked out yahoo's pre-rankings and I think I only kept one person in the same spot on their top 25 most I just got rid of or re-ranked...if thats a word.

Yeah, I haven't gotten around to it yet, but every year I end up shuffling the hell out of those rankings. They're good if you're a first-timer, but if you've already got a system by which you tend to play, you're better off setting the rankings to best suit your own system.

Yeah thats how it is for me and fantasy football, I have my team, most people don't even bother with any position outside of skill players but I do everything right down to the lineman because there are good lineman and there are bad lineman and most site's rankings of them just sucks.

Okay, folks! Time's a-wastin'! We need at least five more teams to make the league worthwhile! Sign up now! Draft time is rapidly approaching.

The Rabid Wombats will crush you all!

Actually, I'd like to see a few more folks join up before I go ahead with a draft. Those of you who have already joined the league, get off your duffs and do some recruiting! :D

Darth Cluich
03-31-2005, 09:53 AM
Hey, folks, I'm going to be running the draft sometime around 11 pm EST this Friday night. If you haven't adjusted your draft rankings, you must do so before then (otherwise, you're stuck with Yahoo's rankings and could wind up with a dud like Barry Bonds).

Also, we currently only have six teams. Getting some more would make the league much better, so let's step up the recruiting! :D

Reformer56

I should be able to make it, but since it's not a live draft it doesn't matter does it?

No, since it's not live, you don't have to be online when it happens. Just be sure you've got your draft rankings set to your liking. You will receive an email from Yahoo when the system has completed running the draft.

The draft went through a little later than planned, but we've all got our players now. Opening Day was yesterday, so be sure to adjust your rosters on a daily basis if you want to be competitive.

And I noticed that Reformer, West, and Buddha all have players on the DL. Y'all might wanna get them on your fantasy team's DL and pick up some replacements.

Reformer56
04-04-2005, 08:57 PM
Yeah but that won't hurt too bad at least I didn't pick up one of the Cubs pitchers. Aren't they on their 3rd or 4th now?

************

EDIT: Wait it doesn't say any of my players are on the DL or am I looking in the wrong place?

If one of your players is on the rl DL, there will be a DL next to his name on your main roster page.

Reformer56

Oh, hmm maybe I'm blind but I don't see any on the DL with my team. Haha look at that Jeter hits a game winning home run in the ninth. Ahhh I love mainstream players.

Anyone got the stat tracker thing for this league?

Darth Cluich
04-25-2005, 08:59 AM
No, but I'm considering getting it. As a kind of poor man's alternative, though, while games are being played, you can click onto the box score for each game to get up-to-the-minute (or more accurately, pitch-by-pitch) stats.

Reformer56
04-25-2005, 06:41 PM
Cluich coming out of nowhere with +6.5 points...nice stuff man. I'd love to know how you pulled that one off.

Alright, everyone, let's see better participation after the All-Star break, or I will be forced to take over control of some teams.

Oh, and West...I offerred you a trade...
