I wrote this for a tiger who was at the zoo that I visit often.

A tiger came to me in the night
Amidst thunder loud and lightning bright
“ I did not want to give you fright”
“But you know that I am dead”

“I asked about you at the zoo”
“I found about your passing from the crew”
“You were the friendliest tiger I ever knew”
“I am sorry you are dead”

“My genes, you know, were never good”
“I didn’t behave the way tigers should”
“My colouration, however, I didn’t think it would
“Contribute to my death”

“The black and white, I thought it grand”
“I guess I really didn’t understand”
“It coded for more than contrasting bands”
“You were susceptible to many things”

“Well, it was fun there at the zoo”
“I enjoyed the many people who”
“Asked about me and the birds that flew”
“Sometimes through my cage”

“But as you can see I now have my wings”
“I will be a tiger that like a bird sings”
“Apart from a cage with bars that ring”
“I soar amidst these clouds”

And so he turned and padded away
With thunder loud and lightning bright as day
Same as his fur, dark and light held sway
I will miss you, Sanjay

I have been in a Thoreauian mood lately and desire accompanying music. Even soundtracks would be good. I have the Eddy Vedder soundtrack to Into The Wild which of course invokes images from the movie, so that works but I am unsure of what music is available out there in this theme.

For Android (I'm not going to link to these, but you can find them by name in app store/Google Play):

Advanced Task Killer by ReChild - for killing apps that like to keep running after you've closed them. There's a free version and a pro.

Amazon AppStore - mostly just for their free app every day. Not always the best app, but hey, free! And so is the app.

pzizz - is a fantastic app if you are having trouble getting to sleep. It has a randomized audio track with bg music/audio and a vocal track that is incredibly relaxing. There is no free option for this, but I found it well worth the price.

Movies by Flixter - pretty much the best universal movie info app, which includes Rotten Tomato ratings. Free.

DoggCatcher - great all-around podcast/rss aggregater and player. Free.

Share yours...

Just a little short story I wrote a few years ago.

Enjoy and comments are appreciated!

The languid movement of the beast caught my attention, and I perked up; for I had been dozing in the lazy, hot rays of the sun illuminating me. I feared I would be seen, for surely its bright, intelligent eyes would catch sight of me, even hidden behind the slight brush. Yet, as my heart pounded beneath my bones, pulse throbbing in my head, the beast slid by without so much as the tiniest inclination of acknowledging my presence. Surprised, but grateful for this, I attempted to stand; no small feat for I had been crouching down for at least an hour’s time. Grimacing as the muscles in my leg protested my movement, I forced myself to abandon my shelter. The beast was just retreating into the dark forest as I emerged, and I barely caught a glimpse of variegated scales sparkling in the sun.

Returning to the assignment at hand, I stepped carefully over to a large mound of dark soil skillfully hidden amongst a nearly rotten log and a spindly bramble bush. Sweat began to form on my brow as I neared the mound. My pulse quickened as I knelt down beside it and laid the tips of my fingers against the dirt. It was shockingly cool even in the warm sun. Cautiously, I began to scrape away the dirt and dead leaves until my fingertips brushed a warm, smooth surface. I withdrew my hand for a moment and cast a frightful glance behind me, but the forest was empty. I returned my gaze to the mound and moved more dirt away until I could safely remove a pale red, elliptical orb.

For a moment, I examined the orb, running my fingers over its silky smoothness. It was about the length of my forearms, and was hard enough to withstand plenty of jostling, though I wasn’t about to test how much. I marveled at the weight; it was not as heavy as I would have thought, and I could see that it was larger than the other orbs still lying fairly buried in the mound.

The thought of what was buried beneath the dark soil brought me back, and I gently placed the orb on the ground beside me and moved the dirt back into place; pressing it firmly into shape again. Then, without hesitation, I picked up the orb in my arms, cradling it, and began the agonizingly slow walk back to my comrades’ camp.

Every moment seemed to stretch on much longer than it really was, for at any moment, the beast might return and would not enjoy the prospect of its treasures being whisked away. It made the returning journey much more perilous; the beast was strong and if angered, it made the change from normally docile to rampaging animal in the time it took to blink.

As I departed from the thinning forest, I allowed my breathing to settle into a more natural rhythm and released my grip on the orb to only a slight pressure. I was in shock that my mission had gone so smoothly, I’d not had such luck the previous time I’d attempted similar. Still, I would not let my triumphant mood be spoiled by the failures of my preceding efforts.

Letting the warmth of my victory fill me, I glanced down at my prize with a smug smile and gently trailed my fingers over its glassy surface. Barely, I could discern my reflection, as the light skewed when it reached the porous, yet solid exterior. Immediately, I grimaced with the thought of my distraction wasting my precious time. Though I was through with the immediate danger, I was not yet in the safe zone. I would need to keep moving, and swiftly.

Following the next step in my carefully planned procedure, I reached into my cloak and withdrew several long strips of thick, soft cloth and began to wind it around the orb in a sort of cocoon. It would not only protect the fragile shell it bore from the treachery of the journey ahead, but provide it with the necessary warmth. I desperately hoped it would be enough.

My inner musings were short-lived however, for a sharp, curt word invaded the silence.

“Hurry!” One of my companions hissed, waving me forward from beyond a few trees and leafy shrubs; now visible, they had previously hidden themselves like I had, crouching in the plentiful and lush undergrowth.

I nodded and shifted forward, careful to place my feet slowly and softly on the earth as I walked with as little movement as possible to minimize the sound of rustling cloth. I was almost through the final section of trees that would lead me to true safety when a bugle of rage directed my attention away.

Heavy flapping blew warm gusts of air towards me, casting away light debris and free topsoil from the earth. I shielded my eyes with my cloth-bound hand and clasped the orb tighter to my abdomen, crouching slightly to steady myself. Squinting, the form of a monstrous saurian creature hovering in the air was visible to me. Fear told me to bolt quickly away and abandon the mission, but pride and stubbornness kept me firmly rooted through my boots and into the ground.
The beast roared a challenge, flashing dangerous needle-teeth in my direction as she descended to the ground. Her scales, glinting ebony and scarlet under the sun, rustled and rose like hackles on a wild dog as she eyed me with a murderous glare. Sparks and smoke shot from her flared nostrils as she whipped her tail about, pacing back and forth before me.

I froze in place, my heart quickening its pace into a rapid, frantic sprint. This was the very thing I had feared would occur and it took nearly all my effort to restrain myself from trembling. A snort and blast of acrid, sulfuric smoke was enough to break my reverie. Thinking swiftly as a warrior does, I gnashed my teeth in frustration and unsheathed a sword from my hip, brandishing it in front of me as I gripped its silver inlaid hilt tightly. Narrowing my brow, I took a battle stance and waited for the beast to make a move.

Claws slashed out at me, once, twice, but with light feet I leapt away, slicing and then using the tip of the sword to steady my feet. Her bulk moved with ease, her eyes calculating as she circled around and receded from my blade.
Again, she charged me, feet thudding against the earth; this time, I waited until she reared her head to strike, and then batted her skull with the flat of my sword. Though I knew it would do no real damage, it confused her enough for me to retreat.

She recoiled, snarling in rage, and blasted fire in my direction.

I yelped in pain as flames licked my sword hand, causing me to release the sword immediately. Favoring my injured digits, I switched the orb to the other arm and instead brought the sword to my non-infirm hand.

The beast seethed and flicked her tongue between her needle-teeth, tasting my fear in the air. She made as though to step forward, but halted her movement as an object clinked against her armored pelt.

I spotted an arrow on the ground, rendered useless by the thick, nearly impenetrable scales she bore and my eyes widened. Frantically I searched for the source while the beast screamed her anger.

Then, my eyes discovered the origin. A man, perched high in the boughs of a nearby tree, mostly hidden from sight, drew back his bow and let another arrow fly. Once more, the arrow did nothing but distract the beast, as she now turned her ferocity on him.

She flapped her sinuous wings thrice and rose into the air towards him, lashing with her forepaws. My fear turned to amazement and curiosity when a curl of fire, not from the beast, lit the air and resulted in a shriek.

Without warning, the man was on the ground before me, and the beast close behind as she pivoted on the branch and prepared to take flight.

The man sprinted for me and grasped my arm, yanking me from my frozen state into a frenzied run to keep in pace with him.

Brush and sapling branches slapped my body and face as we barreled through them, weaving a zigzag pattern into the forest to further confuse the creature. Wing beats followed above and a roar subsequent to flares of flame sounded.

The man chanced a glance behind us and grinned as the form of the beast was lost in the sudden arrival of the thick forest canopy. A thrill of relief jumped into my fiercely pounding heart as we slowed to a stop and listened to lamenting whistles as the saurian circled and flew away.
I sighed and wiped my brow with the back of my hand as I studied my rescuer. Tall, lithe, and tinged slightly brown, the man was covered in camouflaging paints of ochre and river-mud. Animal skins were his clothing, and he carried simple tools on a thick belt. A quiver slung over his shoulder and bow in his hand, he smiled again and nodded curtly.

I returned the nod and smile, touching the orb gently to reassure myself of its presence, still catching my breath.
Snapping of fallen branches had me on instant alert, and my companion had an arrow fletched in the bow-string at once. But our fear was for naught, as I spied my fellows moving toward me from the trees. They crowded around me, clapping me on the back and embracing me.

I chuckled and brought the precious orb forward for them to see, and they marveled over its color and luster. As my comrades further examined the orb, my gaze flicked up to share the experience with the man, yet he who had saved my life was nowhere to be found.

But moments later, all thoughts of him were set aside; my fellows gasped, and my stare returned to the orb. It was cracking in my hands. My heart pounded fiercely; had I somehow damaged it during my escape?

Tiny taps from within disrupted the perfect surface. Hairline fissures radiated from the center and chips of the glossy surface fell away. Suddenly, all at once, the outer shell fell away. A tiny crimson saurian sat in my hold, cooing as it opened its eyes for the first time.
